Executive Summary

GoodHire enters October 2026 as the second-ranked brand in AI-generated background check recommendations, with valid recommendation coverage of 61.11%. That places it 11.5 percentage points behind Checkr at 72.62% and 20.0 points ahead of HireRight at 41.07%. The benchmark shows GoodHire is present in 80.56% of qualified observations, which is the second-highest presence rate in the tracked set, but it is named first in only 10.32% of observations. That gap between presence and rank-one placement is the defining feature of GoodHire's position in this dataset.

The company's strongest cluster is the brand recommendation cluster, which is the only cluster with qualified observations in October 2026. Within that cluster, GoodHire recorded 325 positive mentions, 81 neutral mentions, and zero negative mentions, producing a net sentiment score of 0.8005. That is the second-highest sentiment score among the top four brands, behind HireRight at 0.8378 and ahead of Checkr at 0.7726.

The strongest platform signal for GoodHire is Perplexity, where it recorded a rank-one rate of 41.86% and a top-three rate of 69.77%. The clearest platform gap is ChatGPT, where GoodHire's rank-one rate was 0.00% despite a presence rate of 56.52%. That divergence suggests GoodHire is being surfaced as a reference on ChatGPT but not converted into a first-position recommendation.

GoodHire's coverage held essentially flat from July 2026 (61.0%) to October 2026 (61.1%), a 0.1-point move inside normal variation. The prior-to-current story is more active: coverage rose 7.1 points from 54.0% in September 2026, a significant single-month gain and the company's first upward month after two consecutive declines. Underneath the stable coverage line, the rank-one rate fell from 13.7% in July 2026 to 10.3% in October 2026, a 3.4-point decline inside normal variation.

The clearest opportunity for GoodHire is converting its broad presence into first-position recommendations. The company is present in 406 of 504 qualified observations but holds the top slot in only 52 of those. That conversion gap is the single largest lever available to GoodHire in this dataset.

What GoodHire Is Winning

Questions This Section Answers

  • Where does GoodHire rank strongest in AI background check recommendations?
  • Which platforms show the highest first-position conversion for GoodHire?

GoodHire holds the second-highest valid recommendation coverage in the category at 61.11%, behind only Checkr at 72.62%. That position is stable across the four-month series, with coverage moving from 61.0% in July 2026 to 61.1% in October 2026.

The company's top-three recommendation rate rose from 49.9% in July 2026 to 54.37% in October 2026, a 4.5-point gain. That places GoodHire second in the category on top-three placement, behind Checkr at 70.04% and ahead of HireRight at 33.93%.

GoodHire recorded zero negative mentions across 504 qualified observations in October 2026. Its net sentiment score of 0.8005 is the second-highest among the top four brands, reflecting a framing profile that is overwhelmingly positive or neutral.

On Perplexity, GoodHire recorded a rank-one rate of 41.86%, the highest rank-one rate it achieved on any tracked platform. Its top-three rate on Perplexity was 69.77%, and its presence rate was 86.05%. That platform represents GoodHire's strongest public recommendation signal in this dataset.

GoodHire also recorded a rank-one rate of 16.25% on Gemini and 10.94% on Copilot, both above its overall rank-one rate of 10.32%. Those platforms represent pockets of stronger first-position conversion relative to the company's category-wide average.

Where GoodHire Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why is GoodHire mentioned often but rarely recommended first?
  • On which platforms is GoodHire's rank-one recommendation rate lowest?
  • Which buyer-intent classes remain untested for GoodHire in this dataset?

The clearest gap for GoodHire is rank-one conversion. The company is present in 406 of 504 qualified observations but holds the top slot in only 52 of those. That means GoodHire is mentioned in 80.56% of observations but recommended first in 10.32%. Checkr, by contrast, is present in 98.61% of observations and recommended first in 55.16%. The gap between the two brands on rank-one placement is 44.84 percentage points, far wider than the 11.5-point gap in overall recommendation coverage.

That divergence is most visible on ChatGPT. GoodHire's presence rate on ChatGPT was 56.52%, but its rank-one rate was 0.00%. Checkr's rank-one rate on ChatGPT was 52.17%. When ChatGPT recommends a background check provider first, it is not recommending GoodHire in this dataset. The same pattern appears on Google AI Overviews, where GoodHire's rank-one rate was 3.01% against Checkr's 72.93%.

The benchmark also shows GoodHire's rank-one rate declined from 13.7% in July 2026 to 10.3% in October 2026, a 3.4-point drop. That decline occurred while coverage held flat, suggesting the company is maintaining its presence in AI responses but losing first-position placement within them.

The public benchmark cannot yet answer pricing and value questions or head-to-head comparison questions, because no qualified observations fell into those classes in October 2026. GoodHire's performance in those buyer-intent classes is therefore not tested in this dataset.

Biggest Opportunity

Questions This Section Answers

  • Where is the largest opportunity to improve GoodHire's rank-one recommendation rate?
  • Which platforms account for the biggest share of GoodHire's unranked recommendations?

GoodHire's biggest opportunity is converting its broad presence into first-position recommendations within the brand recommendation cluster. The company is already visible in 80.56% of qualified observations, which means the retrieval layer is working. The gap is in the framing and placement layer: when AI systems assemble a shortlist, GoodHire is frequently included but rarely named first.

That gap is most acute on ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, where GoodHire's rank-one rates are 0.00% and 3.01% respectively. Those two platforms together account for 179 of the 504 qualified observations in this dataset, making them the largest single opportunity for rank-one improvement. Closing even a portion of that gap would move GoodHire's overall rank-one rate materially, given that its current rank-one count is 52 out of 504 observations.

Competitive Landscape

Questions This Section Answers

  • How does GoodHire's recommendation placement compare to Checkr, HireRight, and First Advantage?
  • Which brands lead the background checks category on top-three and rank-one recommendation rates?

Checkr holds dominant recommendation-stage strength in the background checks category, with a top-three rate of 70.04% and a rank-one rate of 55.16%. GoodHire sits second on both measures, with a top-three rate of 54.37% and a rank-one rate of 10.32%. HireRight and First Advantage follow, with top-three rates of 33.93% and 22.02% respectively.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Visibility Market Discovery Audit Map the specific prompts and surfaces where GoodHire is present but not recommended first, with priority on ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Identify the framing, comparison, and trust signals that AI systems appear to weight when selecting a first-position background check provider.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Strengthen GoodHire's owned pages so that the company's differentiators are stated in extractable, comparison-ready language that AI systems can retrieve and synthesize.

Phase 4: Citation / Authority Layer Development Develop the third-party source footprint, including review, comparison, and industry destinations, that AI systems appear to cite when forming background check recommendations.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track GoodHire's rank-one rate, top-three rate, and platform-level placement month over month to measure whether the conversion gap is closing.

Why This Matters

GoodHire is already visible in more than 80% of qualified AI observations in the background checks category. That means the retrieval layer is working. The problem is that visibility alone does not win the buyer shortlist. When a buyer asks an AI system which background check provider to use, the answer that names a provider first carries more weight than an answer that lists the provider third or fourth.

The benchmark shows GoodHire is frequently included but rarely named first. That is a framing and placement problem, not a presence problem. The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers that shape how AI systems assemble and order their recommendations.

Sentiment Score

Questions This Section Answers

  • What does GoodHire's net sentiment score of 0.8005 indicate about how AI systems frame the brand?
  • Why is classified sentiment more useful than raw mention counts for interpreting AI visibility?

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions

For GoodHire in October 2026: (325 × 1 + 81 × 0 + 0 × -1) / 406 = 0.8005.

This matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal. Counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement. Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, because a brand that is mentioned frequently but framed neutrally is in a different position than a brand that is mentioned less often but framed positively.

GoodHire's sentiment score of 0.8005 reflects a framing profile that is overwhelmingly positive or neutral, with zero negative mentions in the October 2026 dataset. That is a strong framing position. The gap is not in how GoodHire is described when it appears; the gap is in how often it is named first.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of GoodHire's AI recommendation position in the background checks category for October 2026. It is not a client implementation case study.
  2. The reporting window is October 2026, with comparison points from July 2026, August 2026, and September 2026 where available.
  3. Six AI/search surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity.
  4. The October 2026 benchmark began with 800 prompt-surface observations and 511 unique questions. Of those, 799 mentioned a tracked brand or competitor, 629 were relevant, and 170 were irrelevant. The public metrics use the 504 qualified observations that survived both qualification stages.
  5. Fifteen companies were tracked in the competitor universe: Accurate Background, Asurint, Certn, Checkr, ClearStar, DISA Global Solutions, First Advantage, GoodHire, HireRight, InfoMart, Justifacts, PreCheck, SecurTest, Universal Background Screening, and Verified Credentials.
  6. Three public high-intent clusters were defined: Best Background Check Services & Providers (consideration), Background Check Provider Comparisons (evaluation), and Background Check Pricing & Cost Evaluation (decision). Only the first cluster had qualified observations in October 2026.
  7. Stage 0 extraction retained the query, AI/search surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and, where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources.
  8. A mention is counted when a tracked brand appears in a qualified AI response, regardless of whether it was recommended.
  9. A valid recommendation is counted when the dataset explicitly marks the brand as recommended, with rank credit applied only to positive valid recommendations ranked 1 through 10.
  10. Brand-level percentages use the 504 qualified observations as the public denominator, not the raw collection of 800 source prompts.
  11. The benchmark does not measure market share, revenue attribution, attributable sales or conversions, organic-search ranking positions, social media mention volume, private or sponsored channels, or causality from a metric movement alone.
  12. Small-count brands in the tracked set operate on single-digit observation counts, and their percentage movements can change sharply with one or two observations. GoodHire's observation counts are sufficient for stable interpretation.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
