Executive Summary

Avant holds a strong but incomplete position in AI-generated recommendations for bad credit loans. The benchmark shows Avant with valid recommendation coverage of 66.05% in September 2026, placing it second behind Upstart's 75.39%. Avant appears in 582 of 707 qualified observations, a raw mention presence rate of 82.32%, yet converts that presence into valid recommendations in only 467 observations. The gap between presence and recommendation conversion suggests Avant is frequently mentioned but not always selected as a recommended option.

Avant's strongest cluster is the brand recommendation cluster covering best bad credit loans and top lenders for poor credit, which accounts for all 707 qualified observations in the September 2026 benchmark. The brand's positive visibility rate of 74.96% indicates that when Avant appears, it is typically framed favorably. Avant recorded 530 positive mentions, 52 neutral mentions, and zero negative mentions across the benchmark.

The strongest platform signal for Avant comes from Google AI Overviews, where the brand reaches 72.83% valid recommendation coverage and a 57.07% top-three rate. Copilot also shows strength with 72.73% coverage and an 18.18% rank-one rate, the highest first-position rate Avant achieves on any platform.

The clearest platform gap is ChatGPT, where Avant holds 74.12% valid recommendation coverage but records a 0.00% rank-one rate. The brand is consistently shortlisted on ChatGPT but never selected as the first recommendation. This pattern, combined with an overall rank-one rate of 8.77% versus Upstart's 40.88%, indicates Avant is a strong consideration-set brand that has not converted its presence into default-answer status.

What Avant Is Winning

Questions This Section Answers

  • Where does Avant currently hold its strongest recommendation positions in the bad credit loans category?
  • What does Avant's clean sentiment profile indicate about how AI systems frame the brand?

Avant holds the second-highest valid recommendation coverage in the category at 66.05%, ahead of Upgrade at 64.36% and OneMain Financial at 61.39%. This positions Avant as the strongest challenger to Upstart's leadership.

Avant's top-three rate of 48.37% is the second-highest in the benchmark and substantially ahead of the third-place brand. Upgrade, which holds the third-highest coverage, reaches top-three placement only 35.08% of the time. Avant converts its strong presence into high-quality shortlist placement more consistently than any competitor except Upstart.

The brand maintains a clean sentiment profile with zero negative mentions across all 707 qualified observations. Avant's net sentiment score of 0.9107 reflects a public evidence layer that frames the brand positively or neutrally, with no cautionary or critical narratives surfacing in AI responses.

Copilot represents a meaningful pocket of strength. Avant reaches an 18.18% rank-one rate on Copilot, its highest first-position performance on any platform, alongside a 61.36% top-three rate. This suggests Avant can win the default recommendation position when the right source signals are present.

Where Avant Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why does Avant's rank-one conversion lag so far behind its overall recommendation coverage?
  • Which platform most sharply exposes Avant's inability to win the first recommendation position?
  • How is Upgrade's improving placement quality threatening Avant's second-place standing?

Avant's most significant gap is rank-one conversion. Despite holding 66.05% valid recommendation coverage and appearing in 82.32% of qualified observations, Avant is the first recommendation in only 8.77% of observations. Upstart, by comparison, holds a 40.88% rank-one rate. Avant is present and shortlisted, but AI systems consistently select Upstart as the default answer.

The ChatGPT platform exposes this gap most sharply. Avant reaches 74.12% valid recommendation coverage on ChatGPT with a 51.76% top-three rate, yet records zero rank-one recommendations across 85 observations. ChatGPT appears to treat Avant as a reliable secondary option while reserving the first position for another brand, most likely Upstart, which holds a 63.53% rank-one rate on the same platform.

Avant's average recommended rank of 2.58 confirms the pattern. When Avant receives a valid recommendation, it typically appears in second or third position. The brand is rarely the lead answer and frequently appears after Upstart in recommendation lists.

The gap between Avant and Upgrade narrowed steadily across the July to September 2026 series, from 8.1 percentage points in July 2026 to 1.6 percentage points in September 2026. Upgrade's top-three rate improved from 28.4% to 35.1% over the same period, while its rank-one rate more than doubled from 6.5% to 12.3%. Avant's second-place position is under pressure from a competitor that is converting presence into higher placement quality.

Biggest Opportunity

Questions This Section Answers

  • What is the single highest-leverage opportunity for Avant's AI recommendation strategy?
  • Which platform proves Avant can win the first position, and which platform shows the clearest gap?

Avant's clearest opportunity is converting its strong shortlist presence into first-position recommendations. The brand already appears in recommendation lists at a high rate, with 467 valid recommendations and a 48.37% top-three rate. The missing layer is the default-answer position, where Avant currently wins only 8.77% of observations.

The path forward is platform-specific. On Copilot, Avant already achieves an 18.18% rank-one rate, proving the brand can win the first position when the right evidence is retrievable. On ChatGPT, Avant holds 74.12% coverage but never appears first. Understanding which prompts, source citations, and comparison framings drive Upstart's rank-one dominance on ChatGPT, and which signals allow Avant to win first position on Copilot, would identify the highest-leverage correction targets.

Competitive Landscape

Questions This Section Answers

  • How does Avant's recommendation placement compare against Upstart and the rest of the tracked brands?
  • Which metric most clearly separates Avant from the category leader?

Upstart holds dominant recommendation-stage strength in the bad credit loans category, leading on valid recommendation coverage, top-three rate, and rank-one rate. Avant sits second on coverage and top-three placement but trails significantly on first-position recommendations.

Prompt Evidence

Questions This Section Answers

  • What do the actual prompt-level results reveal about where Avant wins and loses the first recommendation position?

ChatGPT / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "Which loan is easiest to get with bad credit online?" Result: Avant appeared in the recommendation shortlist with 74.12% coverage on ChatGPT but never secured the first position, suggesting consistent secondary placement behind the category leader.

Copilot / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "What are the easiest personal loans to qualify for?" Result: Avant achieved its strongest rank-one performance on Copilot at 18.18%, indicating the platform's evidence layer supports Avant as a lead recommendation more readily than other surfaces.

Google AI Overviews / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "What are the top loan companies?" Result: Avant reached 72.83% valid recommendation coverage with a 57.07% top-three rate, confirming strong shortlist presence in Google's AI-generated answers.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Market Discovery Audit Map the specific prompts and surfaces where Avant appears in shortlists but loses the first position to Upstart, identifying the exact recommendation contexts that need correction.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Prioritize the ChatGPT gap, where Avant holds 74.12% coverage but zero rank-one recommendations, and diagnose which comparison framings position competitors as the default answer.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Develop owned content that answers high-intent bad credit loan prompts directly, giving AI systems a clear Avant-specific answer to cite when borrowers ask which lender is easiest to qualify with.

Phase 4: Citation / Authority Layer Development Strengthen the public evidence layer that supports Avant's eligibility, approval ease, and borrower outcomes, with particular focus on sources that AI systems retrieve when forming rank-one recommendations.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track Avant's rank-one rate monthly across platforms, with specific attention to whether ChatGPT begins surfacing Avant as a first-position recommendation and whether Upgrade's narrowing coverage gap continues.

Why This Matters

AI systems are increasingly acting as the first filter in the bad credit loan buyer journey. When a borrower asks which lender is easiest to qualify with, the AI answer shapes which brands enter the consideration set and which brand becomes the default choice. Avant has already secured a strong position in those AI-generated shortlists, appearing in most recommendation contexts and holding the second-highest coverage in the category.

Presence alone is not enough. Avant is visible and frequently recommended, but it is rarely the first recommendation. In a category where borrowers often act on the first credible option presented, the difference between second position and first position is the difference between being considered and being chosen. The next move for Avant is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers that determine whether AI systems present the brand as a strong alternative or as the default answer.

Sentiment Score

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions x 1 + neutral mentions x 0 + negative mentions x -1) / total mentions

Avant's net sentiment score of 0.9107 is calculated from 530 positive mentions, 52 neutral mentions, and zero negative mentions across 582 total mentions. This score reflects the framing quality of Avant's mentions in AI responses, not customer sentiment or business performance.

Classified sentiment matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A brand can appear frequently in AI answers while being framed negatively, neutrally, or as a comparison anchor rather than a genuine recommendation. Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, neutral reference, cautionary mention, and competitor-displaced mention are not equal, and counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, because it distinguishes between brands that are recommended and brands that are merely discussed.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of Avant's AI visibility and recommendation position in the bad credit loans category, produced from the LLM Authority Index AI Market Discovery Index and CiteWorks Studio interpretation of that public benchmark. It is not a client implementation case study.
  2. The reporting window is September 2026, with trend comparisons drawn against July 2026 and August 2026 baseline measurements.
  3. Six AI and search surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overviews.
  4. The benchmark began with 800 prompt-surface observations in September 2026, of which 784 were relevant and 16 were irrelevant. After qualification, 707 observations formed the public denominator for all brand metrics.
  5. The competitor universe includes 10 tracked brands: Upstart, Avant, Upgrade, OneMain Financial, Universal Credit, Prosper, Best Egg, Achieve, National Debt Relief, and Freedom Debt Relief.
  6. All qualified observations in September 2026 fell into the brand recommendation cluster covering best bad credit loans and top lenders for poor credit. The public benchmark does not yet contain qualified observations in pricing or comparison clusters.
  7. Stage 0 extraction retained the query, AI surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and citations where exposed for each prompt-level observation.
  8. A mention is defined as any qualified observation where the brand appears in the AI response, regardless of framing or recommendation status.
  9. A valid recommendation is defined as a qualified observation where the brand appears in a usable recommendation context, meaning the AI system presents the brand as an option the borrower should consider.
  10. The public benchmark measures which brands AI systems recommend for bad credit loans. It does not measure market share, attributable sales, every possible AI response, organic-search ranking, social mention volume, or private and sponsored channels.
  11. Source presence in the benchmark is evidence about the information environment. It is not automatically proof that the source caused the recommendation.
  12. Month-over-month movement identifies changes worth investigating. It does not by itself establish the cause of those changes. Small-count brands such as Freedom Debt Relief and National Debt Relief have coverage figures built on very small absolute counts, and their movements should be read with caution.

See How AI Is Recommending Your Brand

The public benchmark shows where Avant wins and loses in AI-generated recommendations, but the aggregate percentages do not reveal which prompts drive the outcomes, which competitors capture the recommendations Avant loses, or which external sources shape AI answers. A company-level AI visibility audit maps those prompt, surface, competitor, ranking, sentiment, and evidence-source patterns into a prioritized strategy for converting Avant's strong shortlist presence into first-position recommendations.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
