Answer Capsule
ILIA Beauty holds the fourth-largest valid recommendation coverage in the clean makeup category at 35.30% in October 2026, down 5.6 points from 40.90% in July 2026, a decline beyond normal month-to-month variation. The brand is visible and positively framed, with a net sentiment score of 0.9344, second-highest in the tracked set, but it is losing recommendation placement while competitors gain. Its strongest signal is an average recommended rank of 2.6667, the best among the four highest-coverage brands, indicating that when ILIA Beauty is recommended, it is recommended prominently. Its clearest weakness is a 12.4-point drop in raw mention presence, the largest in the tracked set, and its clearest opportunity is converting that residual high-placement strength into broader shortlist coverage before the gap to Rare Beauty widens further.

Executive Summary
ILIA Beauty is visible but under-recommended relative to its placement quality. The brand recorded 244 mentions across 626 qualified observations in October 2026, a raw mention presence rate of 39.00%, and converted 221 of those into valid recommendations, a valid recommendation coverage of 35.30%. That coverage places ILIA Beauty fourth in the tracked set, behind e.l.f. Cosmetics at 56.70%, Rare Beauty at 51.60%, and Tower 28 at 40.90%.
The direction of travel is the central finding. ILIA Beauty declined 5.6 points from 40.90% in July 2026 to 35.30% in October 2026, a movement the benchmark classifies as beyond normal month-to-month variation. Its rank-one rate fell 8.0 points over the same window, from 17.40% to 9.42%, and its top-three rate fell 6.8 points, from 26.80% to 19.97%. The brand declined in two consecutive months from August 2026 before a partial recovery in October 2026 relative to September 2026.
The presence signal is the sharpest concern. Raw mention presence fell 12.4 points from 51.40% in July 2026 to 39.00% in October 2026, the largest presence decline in the tracked set. ILIA Beauty is being surfaced in materially fewer AI answers than at baseline, and the coverage decline follows from that.
Framing quality is not the problem. Net sentiment held at 0.9 across the series, and the October 2026 net sentiment score of 0.9344 is the second-highest among tracked brands. AI systems still frame ILIA Beauty positively when they mention it. The loss is in how often it is surfaced and how prominently it is ranked.
The strongest platform signal is Perplexity, where ILIA Beauty recorded a valid recommendation coverage of 50.00% and a rank-one rate of 18.30%, the highest rank-one rate the brand achieved on any tracked platform. The strongest cluster signal is the single qualified cluster, Best Clean Makeup Brands Discovery and Evaluation, where the brand's average recommended rank of 2.6667 is the best among the top four brands by coverage.
The clearest gap is competitive displacement at the top of the shortlist. The distance between ILIA Beauty and Rare Beauty widened in each of the four months of the series, from 1.6 percentage points in July 2026 to 16.3 percentage points in October 2026. The distance between ILIA Beauty and e.l.f. Cosmetics widened from 4.8 points to 21.4 points over the same window.
What ILIA Beauty Is Winning
Questions This Section Answers
- What is ILIA Beauty's strongest advantage in AI recommendations compared to e.l.f. Cosmetics and Rare Beauty?
- Which platform delivers ILIA Beauty's best rank-one rate and sentiment score?
ILIA Beauty's clearest win is placement quality. Its average recommended rank of 2.6667 is the best among the four highest-coverage brands, ahead of e.l.f. Cosmetics at 2.4896, Rare Beauty at 2.9394, and Tower 28 at 3.5324. When ILIA Beauty earns a rank-eligible recommendation, it tends to land near the top of the shortlist.
The brand's second win is framing quality. A net sentiment score of 0.9344, with 228 positive mentions, 16 neutral mentions, and zero negative mentions, indicates that AI systems describe ILIA Beauty favorably when they surface it. No tracked brand recorded a negative mention in October 2026, so this is a relative strength rather than a unique one, but ILIA Beauty sits near the top of the range.
The third win is platform-specific strength on Perplexity. ILIA Beauty recorded a valid recommendation coverage of 50.00% and a rank-one rate of 18.30% on Perplexity, the highest rank-one rate the brand achieved on any tracked platform. Perplexity also produced the brand's highest net sentiment score at 1.0, with 41 positive mentions and zero neutral or negative mentions.
These wins are real but narrow. The brand is not winning on presence, coverage, or shortlist breadth, and the placement advantage is not large enough to offset the coverage decline on its own.
Where ILIA Beauty Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps
Questions This Section Answers
- Why did ILIA Beauty's AI recommendation coverage decline from 40.90% to 35.30%?
- Where is ILIA Beauty losing ground to e.l.f. Cosmetics and Rare Beauty as they separate from the rest of the category?
The clearest gap is presence loss. ILIA Beauty's raw mention presence fell from 51.40% in July 2026 to 39.00% in October 2026, a 12.4-point decline and the largest in the tracked set. A brand cannot convert presence into recommendations if it is not being surfaced, and the coverage decline tracks the presence decline closely.
The second gap is rank-one conversion. ILIA Beauty's rank-one rate fell from 17.40% in July 2026 to 9.42% in October 2026, an 8.0-point drop. Over the same window, e.l.f. Cosmetics raised its rank-one rate from 10.20% to 20.93%, and Rare Beauty raised its rank-one rate from 6.60% to 8.95%. ILIA Beauty entered the series with the highest rank-one rate among the top three brands by coverage and exited it behind both.
The third gap is competitive displacement at the top of the shortlist. The brand is not losing ground to the category as a whole, since it still ranks fourth by coverage, but it is losing ground to the two brands that are separating from the field.
The fourth gap is platform inconsistency. ILIA Beauty's strongest platform by rank-one rate is Perplexity at 18.30%, and its weakest among platforms with meaningful coverage is Google AI Overviews at 3.90%. On Google AI Overviews, the brand recorded a valid recommendation coverage of 23.20%, well below its overall coverage of 35.30%, despite that platform carrying the largest share of total opportunity in the dataset. The brand is strong where the audience is smaller and weaker where the audience is largest.
Biggest Opportunity
Questions This Section Answers
- Which platform offers ILIA Beauty the largest measurable upside if it closes its coverage gap?
- What specific changes to ILIA Beauty's source layer could increase its Google AI Overviews recommendation coverage from 23.20% to 35.30%?
The single biggest opportunity is to reverse the presence decline on Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, the two platforms that together account for the largest share of qualified observations in the benchmark.
ILIA Beauty recorded a valid recommendation coverage of 23.20% on Google AI Overviews and 34.20% on Google AI Mode, against an overall coverage of 35.30%. On Google AI Overviews specifically, the brand's rank-one rate was 3.90%, far below its Perplexity rank-one rate of 18.30%. Google AI Overviews also produced the brand's lowest net sentiment score at 0.973, still positive but the weakest of its platform readings.
The opportunity is specific and measurable. If ILIA Beauty raised its Google AI Overviews coverage from 23.20% to its overall average of 35.30%, it would add roughly 19 valid recommendations on that platform alone, based on the 155 qualified observations recorded there. That would move the brand's overall coverage materially without requiring any change on Perplexity, where it is already performing well.
The path runs through the source layer. The benchmark's top cited domains include sephora.com, ulta.com, allure.com, byrdie.com, and reddit.com, all of which are retail, editorial, or community sources that AI systems retrieve when forming clean makeup recommendations. ILIA Beauty's own domain does not appear in the top 10 cited domains, while thrivecausemetics.com does at rank nine. The brand's public evidence layer appears thinner than its product reputation would suggest.
Competitive Landscape
Questions This Section Answers
- How does ILIA Beauty's average recommended rank compare to e.l.f. Cosmetics, Rare Beauty, and Tower 28 in the clean makeup category?
- Which competitors are separating from the field in top-three and rank-one recommendation rates?
e.l.f. Cosmetics and Rare Beauty hold the strongest recommendation-stage positions in the clean makeup category, with Tower 28 and ILIA Beauty forming a second tier. ILIA Beauty sits fourth by valid recommendation coverage and fourth by top-three rate, but holds the best average recommended rank among the top four brands.
Brand | Top-3 rate | Rank-1 rate | Avg recommended rank | Sentiment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
e.l.f. Cosmetics | 34.19% | 20.93% | 2.4896 | 0.9289 |
Rare Beauty | 29.39% | 8.95% | 2.9394 | 0.855 |
ILIA Beauty | 19.97% | 9.42% | 2.6667 | 0.9344 |
Tower 28 | 18.21% | 4.63% | 3.5324 | 0.8742 |
Kosas | 15.81% | 2.72% | 3.358 | 0.8971 |
Milk Makeup | 13.26% | 2.40% | 3.3007 | 0.8841 |
9.42% | 3.04% | 3.0326 | 0.928 | |
8.47% | 1.60% | 3.5357 | 0.7055 | |
4.63% | 1.44% | 3.6078 | 0.6972 | |
2.08% | 0.80% | 2.8333 | 0.8846 |
Average recommended rank covers rank-eligible recommendations only.
ILIA Beauty's top-three rate of 19.97% places it fourth, roughly 10 points behind Rare Beauty and 14 points behind e.l.f. Cosmetics. Its rank-one rate of 9.42% is closer to Rare Beauty's 8.95% than the coverage gap would suggest, which indicates that when ILIA Beauty reaches the shortlist it competes well for first position. The brand's sentiment score of 0.9344 is the highest in the tracked set, ahead of e.l.f. Cosmetics at 0.9289 and Rare Beauty at 0.855.
AI Response Inconsistency Alerts
Questions This Section Answers
- Why do ChatGPT and Copilot give different answers about whether ILIA Beauty is fully vegan?
- What does the vegan-status conflict reveal about how AI systems retrieve and trust ILIA Beauty's own ingredient documentation?
One high-severity factual inconsistency was detected for ILIA Beauty across two AI platforms, ChatGPT and Copilot.
When asked "Which makeup brands are cruelty-free and vegan?", ChatGPT stated that ILIA Beauty is cruelty-free and Leaping Bunny certified but not completely vegan, noting that the brand's own site says seven products contain beeswax. Copilot, answering the same question, listed ILIA Beauty among fully vegan brands, describing it as offering "clean, vegan formulations with skincare benefits." These two claims cannot both be true.
The conflict is material because vegan status is a core purchase criterion for clean beauty buyers, and the two platforms are giving prospective customers opposite answers to the same question. ChatGPT's response cited the brand's own about-us page alongside Pacifica Beauty and Milk Makeup sources. Copilot's response cited an Amazon product listing for Honeybee Gardens and two Thrive Causemetics product pages, none of which are ILIA Beauty sources.
A flagged source supports the ChatGPT position. ILIA Beauty's own support documentation states that "all except 7 of our products are vegan as well. The only ingredient we use that is not vegan is beeswax," with a confidence rating of 0.95. The Copilot answer appears to have been assembled from third-party retail and competitor pages rather than the brand's own ingredient documentation.
The practical implication is that AI systems are resolving a factual question about ILIA Beauty's product line using inconsistent sources, and at least one platform is producing an answer that contradicts the brand's own published ingredient guidance. This is a source-layer problem, not a framing problem, and it sits directly in the path of the vegan-conscious buyer segment.
Prompt Evidence
Questions This Section Answers
- Which prompt-surface combinations produced ILIA Beauty's strongest and weakest recommendation performance?
- How did AI answers differ across platforms for the cruelty-free and vegan criterion?
ChatGPT / Best Clean Makeup Brands Discovery and Evaluation Prompt: "Which makeup brands are cruelty-free and vegan?" Result: ChatGPT correctly noted that ILIA Beauty is not completely vegan due to beeswax in seven products, citing the brand's own about-us page.
Copilot / Best Clean Makeup Brands Discovery and Evaluation Prompt: "Which makeup brands are cruelty-free and vegan?" Result: Copilot listed ILIA Beauty among fully vegan brands, citing third-party retail and competitor pages rather than the brand's own ingredient documentation.
Perplexity / Best Clean Makeup Brands Discovery and Evaluation Prompt: "What is considered the best tinted moisturizer?" Result: ILIA Beauty recorded its strongest platform performance here, with a 50.00% valid recommendation coverage and an 18.30% rank-one rate on Perplexity.
Google AI Overviews / Best Clean Makeup Brands Discovery and Evaluation Prompt: "What is the best makeup for older skin?" Result: ILIA Beauty's weakest platform showing, with a 23.20% valid recommendation coverage and a 3.90% rank-one rate on the platform carrying the largest share of qualified observations.
What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next
Phase 1: AI Visibility Market Discovery Audit Map exactly which prompts, platforms, and source pages are driving the presence decline, with particular focus on Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode where the brand underperforms its own average.
Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Prioritize the prompt types where ILIA Beauty is mentioned but not shortlisted, and where competitors are absorbing the rank-one positions the brand held at baseline.
Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Strengthen the brand's own ingredient, vegan-status, and product-line documentation so AI systems retrieve accurate first-party answers instead of resolving factual questions from third-party retail pages.
Phase 4: Citation and Authority Layer Development Build the retail, editorial, and community source footprint that the benchmark shows AI systems retrieve most often, since ILIA Beauty's own domain does not appear among the top cited domains while a competitor's does.
Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track presence, coverage, top-three rate, rank-one rate, and sentiment monthly against the July 2026 baseline to confirm whether the October recovery holds or the series decline continues.
Why This Matters
AI presence alone is not enough. ILIA Beauty is mentioned in 39.00% of qualified observations and framed positively in nearly all of them, yet its valid recommendation coverage is 35.30% and falling. The gap between being mentioned and being recommended is where buyer shortlists are formed, and the brand is losing ground in that gap while e.l.f. Cosmetics and Rare Beauty widen their leads.
The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers. The brand does not need to fix its reputation, since its framing quality is the strongest in the tracked set. It needs to fix how often it is surfaced, which sources AI systems retrieve when forming clean makeup recommendations, and whether those sources give accurate answers about its product line. Those are addressable problems with measurable fixes.

Sentiment Score
Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions
For ILIA Beauty in October 2026: (228 × 1 + 16 × 0 + 0 × -1) / 244 = 0.9344.
This matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A brand that appears in 244 AI answers sounds healthy until you separate the 228 positive recommendations from the 16 neutral references. ILIA Beauty's score of 0.9344 is strong, and it is the highest in the tracked set, but it does not tell the whole story.
Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal in commercial value. ILIA Beauty's high sentiment score means AI systems describe it well when they surface it. It does not mean the brand is winning the shortlist, because the coverage and rank-one numbers show it is not.
Counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement. ILIA Beauty's 244 mentions include 16 neutral references where the brand was named without a recommendation. Those are not wins. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, and it is why this report separates mentions from valid recommendations from top-three placements from rank-one placements throughout.

Methodology
- This report is a benchmark-based analysis of ILIA Beauty's AI recommendation visibility in the clean makeup category for October 2026. It is not a client implementation case study and does not represent the results of any CiteWorks Studio engagement.
- The reporting window covers July 2026 through October 2026, with October 2026 as the current measurement month.
- Six AI and search surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode. All six were represented in both the baseline and current months.
- The October 2026 benchmark produced 626 qualified observations from a raw collection of 800 prompt-surface observations, 623 unique questions, and 684 relevant prompts. August 2026 recorded 640 qualified observations and September 2026 recorded 645.
- The competitor universe contains 10 tracked brands: ILIA Beauty, Beautycounter, e.l.f. Cosmetics, Glossier, Kosas, Milk Makeup, Rare Beauty, Tarte Cosmetics, Thrive Causemetics, and Tower 28.
- One public high-intent cluster qualified for measurement: Best Clean Makeup Brands Discovery and Evaluation, classified under the consideration buyer stage. Two additional clusters, covering brand comparisons and pricing, recorded no qualified observations and are excluded from this analysis.
- Stage 0 extraction retained the query, AI or search surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and, where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources for each observation.
- A mention is counted when ILIA Beauty appears in an AI response in any context, including neutral references and comparison anchors.
- A valid recommendation is counted only when the dataset explicitly marks ILIA Beauty as a recommended option in a shortlist. Neutral references, cautionary mentions, and listed-only appearances are not counted as valid recommendations.
- Brand-level percentages use the 626 qualified observations as the public denominator, not the raw collection of 800 prompts.
- Average recommended rank covers rank-eligible recommendations only, meaning positive valid recommendations with a rank between 1 and 10.
- The benchmark measures brand recommendation discovery only. It does not measure market share, sales attribution, organic search ranking performance, social mention volume, or causality from any metric movement. Source presence is evidence about the information environment and is not automatically proof that a source caused a recommendation.
