Answer Capsule

Ironclad holds the strongest rank-one recommendation position in the contract management software category, appearing as the first recommendation in 18.05% of qualified AI responses in September 2026, ahead of DocuSign at 16.80%. The company ranks third by valid recommendation coverage at 37.34%, trailing DocuSign at 56.02% and PandaDoc at 47.30%. Ironclad's average recommended rank of 1.74 means that when the brand is recommended, it tends to appear at or near the top of the shortlist. The clearest weakness is a 5.9-point decline in valid recommendation coverage since July 2026, with top-three placement down 8.7 points from 35.7% to 27.0%. The clearest opportunity lies in converting its strong rank-one performance into broader shortlist inclusion across more high-intent discovery prompts.

Executive Summary

Ironclad holds a distinctive position in the contract management software market: it is the category leader in rank-one recommendations despite ranking third in overall valid recommendation coverage. The September 2026 benchmark shows Ironclad appearing as the first recommendation in 18.05% of qualified AI responses, ahead of DocuSign at 16.80% and PandaDoc at 4.77%. When Ironclad is recommended, its average rank of 1.74 means it typically appears at or near the top of the shortlist, a conversion pattern neither DocuSign nor PandaDoc matches.

The company recorded 180 valid recommendations from 482 qualified observations, a 37.34% valid recommendation coverage rate. Raw mention presence reached 59.34%, meaning Ironclad is mentioned in more than half of all qualified AI responses but converted to a bona fide recommendation in roughly 63% of those mentions. The brand recorded 205 positive mentions, 81 neutral mentions, and zero negative mentions across the observation set.

Ironclad's strongest platform signal comes from Google AI Overviews, where it achieved 64.49% valid recommendation coverage and a 33.33% rank-one rate, the highest rank-one performance of any brand on any platform in this benchmark. Its weakest platform signal is Perplexity, where valid recommendation coverage fell to 8.33% despite a 16.67% raw mention presence rate.

The clearest gap is the 5.9-point decline in valid recommendation coverage from July 2026, when Ironclad held 43.2% coverage. Top-three placement fell 8.7 points from 35.7% to 27.0%, and rank-one recommendations declined from 23.1% to 18.1%. The brand has not fully recovered its July positioning, even as the overall category returned to its prior shape.

What Ironclad Is Winning

Ironclad holds the strongest rank-one recommendation position in the category. At 18.05%, its rank-one rate exceeds DocuSign's 16.80% and PandaDoc's 4.77%, meaning that when AI systems recommend Ironclad, they place it first more often than any competitor.

The brand also leads on average recommended rank. At 1.74, Ironclad's average placement when recommended is the best in the category, ahead of DocuSign at 2.12 and PandaDoc at 2.96. This indicates that Ironclad's recommendations are not just frequent but prominently positioned.

Google AI Overviews represents a meaningful recommendation pocket. Ironclad achieved 64.49% valid recommendation coverage on this platform, with a 33.33% rank-one rate and a 50.00% top-three rate. This is the strongest platform-level performance for any brand in the September benchmark.

The brand maintains a clean sentiment profile with zero negative mentions across all 482 qualified observations, supporting a net sentiment score of 0.7168.

Where Ironclad Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • How much has Ironclad's valid recommendation coverage declined since July 2026?
  • On which platforms is Ironclad mentioned but not converted into recommendations?
  • What does the widening gap between Ironclad's presence rate and its recommendation coverage indicate?

Ironclad's primary gap is the decline in valid recommendation coverage since July 2026. The brand fell from 43.2% to 37.3%, a 5.9-point drop that the benchmark classifies as significant. Top-three placement declined 8.7 points from 35.7% to 27.0%, and rank-one recommendations fell from 23.1% to 18.1%. While the category leaders DocuSign and PandaDoc returned to near their July levels, Ironclad has not fully recovered.

Perplexity represents a clear platform gap. Despite a 16.67% raw mention presence rate, Ironclad converted only 8.33% of qualified observations into valid recommendations on this platform, with zero rank-one placements. The brand is present in Perplexity responses but is not being selected as a recommended option with meaningful frequency.

ChatGPT shows a similar presence-to-recommendation conversion weakness. Ironclad achieved 50.94% raw mention presence on ChatGPT but only 13.21% valid recommendation coverage. The brand is mentioned frequently but recommended infrequently relative to its presence.

The gap between being mentioned and being recommended widened across the three-month series. Ironclad's presence rate of 59.34% in September compares with 59.3% in July, essentially unchanged, while valid recommendation coverage fell from 43.2% to 37.3%. The brand maintains its visibility but is being named as a top recommendation less often than it was at the start of the quarter.

Biggest Opportunity

Questions This Section Answers

  • Where does Ironclad's strongest rank-one recommendation performance occur, and how can it be extended to other platforms?
  • What is the clearest opportunity for converting Ironclad's presence into broader shortlist inclusion?

The clearest opportunity for Ironclad is converting its strong rank-one performance on Google AI Overviews into broader shortlist inclusion across ChatGPT and Perplexity. On Google AI Overviews, Ironclad achieves a 33.33% rank-one rate and 64.49% valid recommendation coverage, demonstrating that AI systems already recognize the brand as a top-tier option in certain contexts. On ChatGPT, however, valid recommendation coverage drops to 13.21% despite a 50.94% presence rate, and on Perplexity it falls to 8.33% despite 16.67% presence. The evidence suggests Ironclad's authority signals are platform-specific rather than uniformly distributed. Expanding the source footprint and owned answer layer that supports Google AI Overviews recommendations to also cover the prompt patterns dominant on ChatGPT and Perplexity would likely narrow the gap between presence and recommendation conversion on those platforms.

Prompt Evidence

Questions This Section Answers

  • What does the Google AI Overviews prompt evidence show about Ironclad's rank-one performance?
  • How do the ChatGPT and Perplexity prompt results demonstrate Ironclad's presence-to-recommendation conversion gap?

Google AI Overviews / Best Contract Management Software Discovery Prompt: "What is the best contract management software for enterprise legal teams?" Result: Ironclad appeared as the first recommendation in one-third of qualified responses on this platform, with a 64.49% valid recommendation coverage rate.

ChatGPT / Best Contract Management Software Discovery Prompt: "Which contract lifecycle management software should my company use?" Result: Ironclad was mentioned in over half of qualified responses but recommended in only 13.21%, indicating frequent presence without recommendation conversion.

Perplexity / Best Contract Management Software Discovery Prompt: "What are the top contract management tools for in-house counsel?" Result: Ironclad appeared in 16.67% of qualified responses but received valid recommendations in only 8.33%, with no rank-one placements recorded.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Market Discovery Audit Map the specific prompt categories where Ironclad appears in ChatGPT and Perplexity responses without receiving recommendation credit, and identify which competitors take the top-three slots Ironclad held in July.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Prioritize the prompt clusters where Ironclad's presence-to-recommendation gap is widest, focusing on ChatGPT and Perplexity where the brand is mentioned but not shortlisted.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Develop owned content that directly answers the high-intent discovery prompts where Ironclad loses recommendation placement, mirroring the answer formats that already perform well on Google AI Overviews.

Phase 4: Citation / Authority Layer Development Strengthen the external source footprint that supports Ironclad's strong Google AI Overviews performance, extending those citation patterns to the evidence sources ChatGPT and Perplexity appear to draw from.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track whether the gap between Ironclad's presence rate and valid recommendation coverage narrows month over month, with particular attention to top-three and rank-one recovery toward July 2026 levels.

Why This Matters

AI-generated recommendations are increasingly shaping which contract management software vendors appear on buyer shortlists. Ironclad's position is unusual: it wins the first recommendation slot more often than any competitor, yet it appears in fewer shortlists overall than DocuSign or PandaDoc. That combination means the brand is highly persuasive when selected but is being excluded from a meaningful share of consideration sets.

Presence alone is not enough. Ironclad is mentioned in nearly 60% of qualified AI responses but recommended in only 37%. The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers that determine whether a mention becomes a recommendation, particularly on ChatGPT and Perplexity where the conversion gap is widest.

Sentiment Score

Questions This Section Answers

  • How is Ironclad's net sentiment score calculated?
  • Why is classified sentiment required before interpreting AI visibility?

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions

For Ironclad, this equals (205 × 1 + 81 × 0 + 0 × -1) / 286, producing a net sentiment score of 0.7168.

This score matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, neutral reference, cautionary mention, and competitor-displaced mention are not equal. Counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, because a brand can appear frequently in AI responses while being framed in ways that do not support recommendation or selection.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of Ironclad's AI recommendation visibility in the contract management software category, produced from the September 2026 LLM Authority Index AI Market Discovery Index and CiteWorks Studio industry research. It is not a client implementation case study.
  2. The reporting window is September 2026, with July 2026 and August 2026 referenced for trend context.
  3. Six AI and search surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overviews.
  4. The benchmark began with 800 source prompt-surface observations, of which 712 were relevant to the contract management software category and 88 were filtered out as irrelevant, leaving 482 qualified benchmark observations.
  5. The competitor universe included 10 tracked brands: Agiloft, Conga, ContractSafe, ContractWorks, DocuSign, Icertis, Ironclad, Juro, LinkSquares, and PandaDoc.
  6. The public benchmark measured one high-intent cluster: Best Contract Management Software Discovery. The Pricing and Value and Multi-Brand Comparison clusters recorded zero qualified observations in September 2026.
  7. Stage 0 extraction captured prompt-level observations including the query, AI surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and citations where exposed.
  8. A mention is defined as any appearance of a tracked brand in an AI response to a qualified observation.
  9. A valid recommendation is defined as a bona fide recommendation of a brand, excluding passing mentions, comparison anchors, and neutral references.
  10. Brand-level percentages use the 482 qualified observations as the public denominator, not the 800 raw observations.
  11. The public benchmark does not measure market share, attributable sales, every possible AI response, organic-search ranking, social mention volume, or private and sponsored channels. A metric movement alone does not establish causality.
  12. Small-count caution applies to platform-level breakdowns where observation counts are limited, particularly Perplexity with 60 total observations and Copilot with 39 total observations.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
