Key Takeaways
- Chime remains positively framed, with a net sentiment score of 0.9475 and no negative mentions in the October 2026 sample.
- Recommendation coverage fell to 62.3% from 74.3% in July 2026, showing a clear loss of ground over time.
- The main issue is reduced presence and top-three placement, not weak sentiment; Chime converts well when it appears.
- A factual inconsistency about Chime Credit Builder’s deposit requirement suggests the source layer needs clearer, consistent product pages.
Answer Capsule
Chime remains one of the three most recommended brands in the Credit Cards for Building Credit category in October 2026, with valid recommendation coverage of 62.30% across 565 qualified observations. The benchmark shows Chime is visible and positively framed, but its recommendation power is contracting: coverage fell 12.0 percentage points from 74.3% in July 2026, and raw mention presence fell 15.6 points over the same period. The clearest win is a stable rank-one share of 6.55% and a net sentiment score of 0.9475. The clearest weakness is a significant loss of presence and top-three placement against both the July 2026 baseline and the September 2026 peak. The clearest opportunity is defending and rebuilding the consideration-stage prompts where Chime is being displaced, particularly as Capital One entered the qualified set at the top of the table.

Executive Summary
Chime holds third place in the Credit Cards for Building Credit category in October 2026 with valid recommendation coverage of 62.30%, behind Capital One at 86.7% and OpenSky at 78.9%. The benchmark shows Chime is visible but losing recommendation ground: coverage fell 12.0 percentage points from 74.3% in July 2026, and fell 9.7 points from 72.0% in September 2026, when Chime shared the category lead with OpenSky.
The decline is concentrated in presence and placement rather than in framing. Raw mention presence fell from 83.0% in July 2026 to 67.4% in October 2026, a significant decline of 15.6 points. Top-three rate fell from 53.0% to 46.7%, a significant decline of 6.3 points. Rank-one rate held within normal variation at 6.55% versus 8.8% in July 2026, and net sentiment stayed strongly positive at 0.9475 in both months.
The strongest cluster signal for Chime is the single qualified cluster, Best Credit Cards for Building Credit, where Chime recorded 352 valid recommendations and 264 top-three placements from 565 qualified observations. The weakest signal is the contraction in raw mention presence, which indicates Chime is appearing less often in AI answers even though the answers that do include the brand remain favorable.
The strongest platform signal is Google AI Overviews, where Chime recorded 102 valid recommendations and a rank-one rate of 9.6%. The clearest platform gap is Perplexity, where Chime's valid recommendation coverage was 30.8%, well below its category average, and Gemini, where coverage was 54.4%.
The benchmark also detected one high-confidence factual inconsistency involving Chime: ChatGPT and Google AI Mode gave conflicting answers about whether Chime Credit Builder requires a security deposit. That conflict sits in the same response universe as the recommendation decline and points to a source-layer problem rather than a framing problem.
What Chime Is Winning
Questions This Section Answers
- How does Chime's framing quality and sentiment compare with its recommendation placement?
- Which platforms and metrics represent Chime's strongest recommendation signals in this category?
Chime's clearest win is framing quality. Net sentiment score was 0.9475 in October 2026, with 361 positive mentions, 20 neutral mentions, and zero negative mentions across 381 presence mentions. That is one of the strongest sentiment profiles in the tracked set.
Chime also holds a meaningful rank-one position. The brand recorded 37 rank-one placements in October 2026, a rank-one rate of 6.55%, and an average recommended rank of 2.84 when it receives rank credit. Among brands outside the top two, that is the strongest first-position signal in the category.
On platform, Google AI Overviews is Chime's strongest surface, with 102 valid recommendations, a 69.9% valid recommendation coverage rate, and a 9.6% rank-one rate. Copilot is also favorable, with a 65.9% valid recommendation coverage rate and a 5.7% rank-one rate.
These are real but narrow wins. Chime is not winning the category on coverage, and the wins above do not offset the significant declines in presence and top-three placement.
Where Chime Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps
Questions This Section Answers
- How large is Chime's top-three and presence gap behind Capital One and OpenSky?
- On which AI platforms does Chime's recommendation coverage fall below its category average?
Chime's clearest gap is displacement at the consideration stage. Capital One entered the qualified set in October 2026 at 86.7% coverage with a top-three rate of 83.72% and a rank-one rate of 36.64%, the highest in the series to date. OpenSky posted a second consecutive monthly gain and now sits at 78.9% coverage with a top-three rate of 67.61%. Chime's 46.73% top-three rate is 37.0 points behind Capital One and 20.9 points behind OpenSky.
The gap is not only about who leads. It is about how often Chime appears at all. Raw mention presence fell 15.6 points from July 2026, while Capital One's presence reached 93.1% and OpenSky's reached 82.8%. Chime is now mentioned in roughly two of every three qualified observations, compared with more than nine in ten for Capital One. When Chime is not mentioned, the recommendation shortlist is being filled by other brands.
Platform-level gaps reinforce the pattern. Chime's valid recommendation coverage on Perplexity was 30.8%, and on Gemini 54.4%, both below its 62.30% category average. On ChatGPT, coverage was 57.5%, also below average. The brand's strongest surfaces, AI Overviews and Copilot, are carrying the category number.
The benchmark also shows a source-layer risk. One high-confidence inconsistency was detected involving Chime, and the flagged source pages include third-party comparison and review sites. That pattern suggests some of the answers being generated about Chime are being assembled from sources that do not agree with each other.
Biggest Opportunity
Questions This Section Answers
- Which consideration-stage prompts offer Chime the clearest path to rebuilding presence?
- How efficiently does Chime convert AI mentions into valid recommendations when it does appear?
Chime's biggest opportunity is reclaiming presence on the consideration-stage prompts where it is being displaced. The benchmark's only qualified cluster is Best Credit Cards for Building Credit, and the prompts in that cluster are direct recommendation questions such as which card is easiest to get, which card helps build credit, and which card accepts a 500 credit score. These are the prompts where a buyer forms a shortlist.
Chime already converts well when it appears: 352 valid recommendations from 381 presence mentions, a 92.4% conversion from mention to valid recommendation. The problem is that it is appearing less often. Rebuilding presence on the consideration-stage prompt set, and correcting the source pages that AI systems are retrieving for Chime's product terms, is the clearest path from reference to recommendation.
Competitive Landscape
Questions This Section Answers
- How does Chime's top-three and rank-one rate compare with Capital One and OpenSky?
- Where does Chime sit relative to Self and the remaining tracked brands in the category?
Capital One holds the strongest recommendation-stage position in the category in October 2026, followed by OpenSky. Chime sits third, ahead of Self and well ahead of the remaining tracked brands.
Brand | Top-3 rate | Rank-1 rate | Avg recommended rank | Sentiment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Capital One | 83.72% | 36.64% | 1.76 | 0.9506 |
OpenSky | 67.61% | 32.57% | 2.07 | 0.9615 |
Chime | 46.73% | 6.55% | 2.84 | 0.9475 |
Self | 26.55% | 1.77% | 3.02 | 0.9292 |
Navy Federal Credit Union | 2.65% | 0.71% | 3.38 | 0.2267 |
0.35% | 0.00% | 2.50 | 1.0000 | |
0.18% | 0.00% | 3.00 | 0.3333 | |
Discover Home Loans | 0.00% | 0.00% | N/A | 0.0000 |
Average recommended rank covers rank-eligible recommendations only.
Chime's row shows a brand with strong sentiment and a competitive average recommended rank, but a top-three rate roughly half of OpenSky's and a rank-one rate roughly one-fifth of OpenSky's. The table places Chime clearly inside the top tier on framing and clearly outside it on first-position selection.
AI Response Inconsistency Alerts
Questions This Section Answers
- What specific Chime Credit Builder product detail did ChatGPT and Google AI Mode describe differently?
- Which source pages were cited on each side of the deposit conflict?
One high-severity factual inconsistency was detected for Chime across two AI platforms, ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, with a confidence score of 0.9.
The conflict concerns whether Chime Credit Builder requires a security deposit. When asked "What is the best secured credit card with no credit check?", Google AI Mode stated that Chime Credit Builder requires moving money into a safe zone as a flexible security deposit, citing pages including OneUnited's UNITY Visa Secured Credit Card page, a Finder comparison of low-deposit secured cards, and a Tilt blog post on cash advances with bad credit. ChatGPT, answering the same question, stated that Chime Credit Builder has no deposit requirement, citing NerdWallet's Best Secured Credit Cards page.
The two claims are incompatible. A flagged source page from Bankrate, cited on both sides of the conflict, contains language that may help explain the split: it notes that while there is no traditional security deposit, the money added to the checking account becomes the credit limit. That framing sits between the two platform claims and suggests the disagreement may stem from how different sources describe the same product mechanic.
This is a source-layer problem, not a framing problem. The benchmark's public series does not yet measure pricing and fee questions directly, so the conflict was detected in the same response universe as the recommendation data rather than inside the qualified cluster set.
Prompt Evidence
Google AI Mode / Best Credit Cards for Building Credit Prompt: "What credit card helps build your credit?" Result: Chime appeared in the recommendation shortlist with a top-three placement, consistent with the brand's strongest platform signal.
ChatGPT / Best Credit Cards for Building Credit Prompt: "What is the easiest secured card to get approved for?" Result: Chime appeared in the response but at a lower placement rate than its category average, consistent with the 57.5% valid recommendation coverage recorded on ChatGPT.
Perplexity / Best Credit Cards for Building Credit Prompt: "What is the easiest credit card for bad credit?" Result: Chime's coverage on Perplexity was 30.8%, the brand's weakest platform result, indicating the brand is frequently absent from Perplexity shortlists on this prompt type.
Google AI Mode / Best Credit Cards for Building Credit Prompt: "What is the best secured credit card with no credit check?" Result: Google AI Mode described Chime Credit Builder as requiring a flexible security deposit, while ChatGPT described the same product as having no deposit requirement, producing the high-confidence conflict documented above.
What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next
Phase 1: AI Visibility Market Discovery Audit. Map exactly which prompts and surfaces lost Chime presence between July 2026 and October 2026, and identify which competitor filled each displaced shortlist position.
Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan. Prioritize the consideration-stage prompts where Chime converts well when it appears, and rebuild presence there before expanding into new prompt types.
Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout. Publish clear, extractable product pages that resolve the deposit and credit-limit mechanics in plain language, so AI systems retrieve one consistent description of Chime Credit Builder.
Phase 4: Citation / Authority Layer Development. Strengthen the third-party comparison and review pages that AI systems cite for Chime, since the flagged sources in the detected conflict include comparison sites and a news outlet.
Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking. Track presence, top-three rate, rank-one rate, and sentiment by platform each month, with a standing check on factual consistency for Chime's product terms.
Why This Matters
AI presence alone is not enough. Chime is mentioned positively in most answers that include the brand, and it converts almost every mention into a valid recommendation. But the benchmark shows the brand is being mentioned less often, and the shortlists it is missing are being filled by Capital One and OpenSky. A buyer asking an AI system for the easiest card to build credit may never see Chime in the answer at all.
The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers. That means rebuilding presence on the specific consideration-stage prompts where Chime lost ground, publishing owned pages that describe Chime Credit Builder consistently, and strengthening the third-party sources AI systems retrieve when they describe the product. The detected deposit conflict is a concrete example of why the source layer matters: two platforms gave incompatible answers about the same product, and the fix sits in the pages those platforms are reading.

Sentiment Score
Questions This Section Answers
- Why is a high net sentiment score not enough to protect Chime's recommendation position?
- What does Chime's classified sentiment profile reveal about the nature of its visibility problem?
Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions
For Chime in October 2026: (361 × 1 + 20 × 0 + 0 × -1) / 381 = 0.9475.
This matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A brand can appear in hundreds of AI answers and still lose the buyer if those appearances are neutral references, cautionary notes, or comparison anchors rather than recommendations. Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal, and counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement.
Chime's score of 0.9475 means the brand is framed positively in nearly every answer that includes it. That is a genuine strength. It also means the brand's problem is not how it is described when it appears, but how often it appears at all. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, and in Chime's case it points the diagnosis toward presence and placement rather than framing.

Methodology
- Report orientation. This is a benchmark-based AI Visibility Company Market Strategy Report for Chime in the Credit Cards for Building Credit category. It is not a client implementation case study and does not describe work performed by CiteWorks Studio.
- Reporting window. The current measurement month is October 2026, with the July 2026 baseline and the August 2026 and September 2026 intermediate months used for trend comparison.
- Platforms tracked. Six canonical AI and search surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. All six registered at least one qualified observation in both the baseline and current months.
- Observation count. Each monthly run began with 800 source prompt-surface observations. October 2026 produced 565 qualified observations after relevance and qualification steps, the largest qualified set in the series to date.
- Competitor universe. Eight brands were tracked across the full series: Applied Bank, Capital One, Chime, Discover Home Loans, First Latitude, Navy Federal Credit Union, OpenSky, and Self.
- Public clusters used. One cluster qualified for public reporting in October 2026: Best Credit Cards for Building Credit, a consideration-stage cluster. Two additional clusters, Credit Card Comparisons for Credit Building and Credit Card Pricing and Fees for Credit Builders, returned no qualified observations and are not measured in this public series.
- Stage 0 role. Stage 0 extraction retains the query, surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and, where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources. Source presence is evidence about the information environment and is not treated as proof of causation.
- Definition of a mention. A mention is any qualified observation in which Chime appears in the AI response, regardless of placement or framing.
- Definition of a valid recommendation. A valid recommendation is a qualified observation in which Chime appears in a valid recommendation shortlist. Negative, neutral, cautionary, comparison-anchor, and listed-only mentions are not counted as valid recommendations unless the dataset explicitly marks them as such.
- Ranking interpretation. Top-three rate and rank-one rate are calculated against the 565 qualified observations. Average recommended rank covers rank-eligible recommendations only.
- Data note. The public benchmark uses the 565 qualified observations as the denominator for all brand-level percentages, not the 800 collected prompts. The 638 unique questions in October 2026 are the deduplicated question count, not the qualified observation count.
- Limitations. The public series measures the Brand Recommendation class of discovery only. It does not measure pricing, fee comparison, or head-to-head preference questions, and it does not establish causality from any single metric movement.
See How AI Is Recommending Your Brand
The public benchmark shows where Chime is winning and losing in AI recommendations. A company-level AI visibility audit shows why: which prompts moved, which competitor took the recommendation when Chime lost position, what attributes AI systems associate with each option, and which source pages shaped those answers. That analysis turns the benchmark's findings, including the deposit conflict detected across ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, into a prioritized plan for defending and rebuilding AI recommendation share.
