Executive Summary

Coinbase Wallet holds a mid-tier position in the October 2026 Crypto Wallets benchmark. Its valid recommendation coverage of 36.1 percent places it sixth of ten tracked brands, behind Ledger (73.0 percent), Trezor (68.3 percent), Trust Wallet (62.2 percent), MetaMask (53.8 percent), and Exodus (39.5 percent). The brand recorded 242 valid recommendations from 671 qualified observations, with 251 positive mentions, 49 neutral mentions, and 1 negative mention.

The gap between presence and recommendation is the defining pattern. Coinbase Wallet appeared in 44.9 percent of qualified observations, but its top-three rate was 17.4 percent and its rank-one rate was 5.4 percent. That means the brand is frequently named in AI answers without being placed in the shortlist positions that shape buyer choice. Ledger, by contrast, converted a 93.7 percent presence rate into a 53.2 percent top-three rate and a 30.7 percent rank-one rate.

The strongest cluster is the only cluster with qualified data: Best & Top Crypto Wallet Discovery, a consideration-stage cluster covering direct asks for the best or a recommended crypto wallet. Coinbase Wallet's top-three rate in that cluster was 17.4 percent, and its average recommended rank was 3.35. The comparison and pricing clusters registered zero qualified observations in October 2026, so the benchmark cannot yet answer head-to-head or cost-related questions for this category.

The strongest platform signal for Coinbase Wallet is Perplexity, where the brand reached a 25.3 percent top-three rate and a 6.3 percent rank-one rate. The weakest platform signal is Gemini, where the brand recorded a 6.6 percent top-three rate and no rank-one placements. ChatGPT and AI Overviews carried the largest share of the brand's captured recommendation value, which means those surfaces matter most for any correction effort.

The clearest opportunity is the conversion gap between presence and placement. Coinbase Wallet is already being surfaced in nearly half of qualified observations. The work ahead is not about becoming visible, it is about becoming the answer that AI systems place in the top three and, more importantly, in the first position.

What Coinbase Wallet Is Winning

Questions This Section Answers

  • What drove Coinbase Wallet's coverage gain from the May 2026 baseline?
  • Which platform shows the strongest recommendation pocket for Coinbase Wallet?
  • How does Coinbase Wallet's sentiment profile compare with the category leaders?

Coinbase Wallet's clearest win is its baseline-to-current trajectory. Valid recommendation coverage rose from 7.4 percent in May 2026 to 36.1 percent in October 2026, a gain of 28.7 points. That is the fourth-largest baseline gain among tracked brands, behind Ledger and Trezor (each up 47.0 points) and Trust Wallet (up 44.9 points), and ahead of MetaMask's 39.1-point gain in absolute terms only when measured against a lower starting base.

The brand also posted a modest month-over-month gain, rising 3.0 points from 33.1 percent in September 2026 to 36.1 percent in October 2026. That movement held sixth place and kept the brand ahead of Exodus, which slipped 1.5 points over the same span.

Coinbase Wallet's sentiment profile is clean. With 251 positive mentions, 49 neutral mentions, and 1 negative mention, its net sentiment score of 0.8306 is the third highest among the top six brands, behind Zengo (0.9018) and BlueWallet (0.8842). Negative framing is effectively absent from the public evidence layer for this brand.

Perplexity is the strongest platform pocket. Coinbase Wallet reached a 25.3 percent top-three rate and a 6.3 percent rank-one rate there, with 50 positive mentions from 53 total mentions. That is a narrow but meaningful recommendation pocket, and it shows the brand can win placement on at least one surface.

Where Coinbase Wallet Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • How large is the gap between Coinbase Wallet's presence and its top-three placement?
  • Which competitor best illustrates the conversion gap Coinbase Wallet has not closed?
  • Why is Gemini the weakest platform for Coinbase Wallet?

The primary gap is recommendation conversion. Coinbase Wallet's presence rate of 44.9 percent is more than double its valid recommendation coverage of 36.1 percent, and its top-three rate of 17.4 percent is less than half its coverage. The brand is being named, but it is not being shortlisted at the rate its visibility would suggest.

Ledger is the clearest displacement reference. Ledger holds a 53.2 percent top-three rate and a 30.7 percent rank-one rate against Coinbase Wallet's 17.4 percent and 5.4 percent. When AI systems form a shortlist for crypto wallet discovery prompts, Ledger takes the first position in roughly one of every three qualified observations. Coinbase Wallet takes it in roughly one of every nineteen.

MetaMask is the more instructive comparison. MetaMask holds a 53.8 percent valid recommendation coverage and a 41.0 percent top-three rate, both well above Coinbase Wallet's figures, despite a presence rate of 71.4 percent that is not dramatically higher than Coinbase Wallet's 44.9 percent. MetaMask converts its presence into placement at a materially higher rate. That is the conversion pattern Coinbase Wallet has not yet matched.

Gemini is the weakest platform. Coinbase Wallet recorded a 6.6 percent top-three rate and no rank-one placements on Gemini, with 33 mentions from 91 observations. By contrast, Ledger reached a 48.4 percent top-three rate and a 17.6 percent rank-one rate on the same surface. The gap on Gemini is the widest platform-level separation between Coinbase Wallet and the category leader.

The comparison and pricing clusters remain unmeasured. Both registered zero qualified observations in October 2026, so the benchmark cannot show whether Coinbase Wallet wins or loses when AI systems are asked to compare wallets directly or to evaluate fees and value. Those are high-intent question types, and the absence of data is a gap in the public evidence layer rather than a confirmed weakness.

Biggest Opportunity

Questions This Section Answers

  • Which platforms offer the clearest opportunity to close Coinbase Wallet's presence-to-placement gap?
  • What type of prompts are driving the recommendation gap on ChatGPT and AI Overviews?

The biggest opportunity is closing the presence-to-placement gap on ChatGPT and AI Overviews. Those two surfaces carried the largest share of Coinbase Wallet's captured recommendation value in October 2026, and both show the same pattern: the brand is mentioned frequently but placed in the top three far less often than the leaders.

On ChatGPT, Coinbase Wallet recorded a 16.9 percent top-three rate and a 9.1 percent rank-one rate, against Ledger's 53.3 percent and 32.5 percent. On AI Overviews, Coinbase Wallet recorded a 20.0 percent top-three rate and a 6.5 percent rank-one rate, against Ledger's 49.4 percent and 30.0 percent. The brand is present on both surfaces. The work is to move from present to preferred.

This is a recommendation-stage problem, not an awareness problem. The prompts driving these surfaces are direct discovery questions such as which wallet is best, which is safest, and which wallet to use for a specific asset. Coinbase Wallet already appears in the answers. The opportunity is to become the answer that AI systems place first.

Competitive Landscape

Questions This Section Answers

  • Where does Coinbase Wallet rank on top-three and rank-one placement among tracked brands?
  • Which tier does Coinbase Wallet occupy relative to Ledger, Trezor, Trust Wallet, and MetaMask?

Ledger and Trezor hold the strongest recommendation-stage positions in the Crypto Wallets category, with Trust Wallet and MetaMask forming a clear second tier. Coinbase Wallet sits in the third tier, ahead of Exodus on coverage but behind it on rank-one placement.

Prompt Evidence

ChatGPT / Best & Top Crypto Wallet Discovery Prompt: "What is the safest way to buy Bitcoin?" Result: Coinbase Wallet appeared in the response but was placed outside the top three, while Ledger and Trezor took the leading positions.

AI Overviews / Best & Top Crypto Wallet Discovery Prompt: "Which wallet is best to hold Bitcoin?" Result: Coinbase Wallet was mentioned with positive framing but did not reach a rank-one placement, consistent with its 6.5 percent rank-one rate on AI Overviews.

Perplexity / Best & Top Crypto Wallet Discovery Prompt: "What is the best crypto wallet to use?" Result: Coinbase Wallet reached a top-three placement, one of the brand's stronger platform-level outcomes in October 2026.

Gemini / Best & Top Crypto Wallet Discovery Prompt: "Which is the safest crypto wallet?" Result: Coinbase Wallet was mentioned but did not reach a top-three placement, consistent with its 6.6 percent top-three rate on Gemini.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Visibility Market Discovery Audit Map every qualified prompt where Coinbase Wallet appears but does not reach the top three, and identify which competitor takes the placement instead.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Prioritize the ChatGPT and AI Overviews prompts where the brand is already visible, since those surfaces carry the largest share of its captured recommendation value.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Strengthen the owned pages that answer direct discovery questions such as which wallet is safest and which wallet to use for a specific asset, so AI systems have a clear, retrievable source for the brand's positioning.

Phase 4: Citation and Authority Layer Development Build the third-party comparison, review, and reference sources that AI systems cite when forming wallet shortlists, since the benchmark shows citations are broadly distributed across video, community, and finance domains.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track top-three and rank-one rates by platform and cluster each month, with particular attention to whether the presence-to-placement gap narrows on ChatGPT and AI Overviews.

Why This Matters

Coinbase Wallet is already visible in nearly half of the qualified AI observations for crypto wallets. That is not the problem. The problem is that visibility is not converting into placement. When a buyer asks an AI system which wallet is best or which is safest, Coinbase Wallet is named, but it is rarely named first. The brands that are named first are the ones that shape the shortlist.

AI presence alone is not enough. The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers that determine whether a brand is mentioned or recommended. For Coinbase Wallet, that means focusing on the surfaces where it already appears, closing the gap to the leaders on top-three placement, and building the public evidence layer that AI systems draw on when they decide which wallet to recommend first.

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why does a clean sentiment score not confirm that Coinbase Wallet is being recommended?
  • How are positive recommendations separated from neutral or cautionary mentions in this benchmark?

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions

For Coinbase Wallet in October 2026, that is (251 × 1 + 49 × 0 + 1 × -1) / 301, which produces a net sentiment score of 0.8306.

This matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A brand that appears in 301 AI responses sounds strong until the mentions are separated into positive recommendations, neutral references, and cautionary notes. Coinbase Wallet's profile is clean, with only one negative mention across the qualified set, but a clean sentiment score does not mean the brand is being recommended. It means the brand is being described favorably when it appears.

Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal. Counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, because the difference between being mentioned and being recommended is the difference between presence and placement.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of Coinbase Wallet's AI recommendation visibility in the Crypto Wallets category. It is not a client result and does not imply that CiteWorks Studio caused any benchmark outcome.
  2. The reporting month is October 2026. The May 2026 baseline is referenced for trend context only.
  3. Six AI and search surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, and AI Mode.
  4. The October 2026 measurement produced 671 qualified observations from 800 source prompt-surface observations, covering 484 unique questions.
  5. Ten brands were tracked: Best Wallet, BlueWallet, Coinbase Wallet, Electrum, Exodus, Ledger, MetaMask, Trezor, Trust Wallet, and Zengo.
  6. Three public high-intent clusters were in scope: Best & Top Crypto Wallet Discovery, Crypto Wallet Comparison & Alternatives, and Crypto Wallet Pricing, Fees & Cost Evaluation. Only the first cluster produced qualified observations in October 2026.
  7. Stage 0 extraction supplied the prompt-level observations, including query, surface, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and citations where exposed.
  8. A mention is counted when a brand appears anywhere in an AI response for a qualified observation.
  9. A valid recommendation is counted when the dataset explicitly marks the brand as recommended, separate from neutral, cautionary, or listed-only mentions.
  10. Top-three rate is the share of qualified observations where the brand appears in the top three recommended positions. Rank-one rate is the share where the brand is the first recommendation.
  11. Average recommended rank covers rank-eligible recommendations only. A brand with no rank-eligible recommendations is shown as not applicable.
  12. The July 2026 collection run marked a methodology shift from the May 2026 run. The trend series from May through October should be read with that change in mind, since the benchmark cannot fully separate platform behavior from measurement effects.
  13. Best Wallet, Electrum, and BlueWallet have small absolute valid recommendation counts in October 2026. Their percentages should be interpreted with that small-count caveat in mind.
  14. Source presence is evidence about the information environment. It is not automatically proof that a source caused a recommendation.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
