  • The benchmark measured only Brand Recommendation prompts, leaving pricing, value, and multi-brand comparison performance unmeasured.

Answer Capsule

Fidelity leads the Online Financial Advisors category in AI-generated recommendations, holding 81.4% valid recommendation coverage in September 2026 across 501 qualified observations. The brand is mentioned in 99.6% of qualified responses and is the first recommendation in 42.5% of them, the highest rank-one rate in the benchmark. Fidelity's clearest strength is placement quality: it converts visibility into top-three and first-position recommendations more effectively than any tracked competitor. Its clearest weakness is a slight coverage decline from 83.9% in July 2026 and a narrow 1.2-point lead over Charles Schwab, the smallest gap between the top two brands in the series. The clearest opportunity is defending and extending rank-one placement across the AI surface families where Fidelity's first-position rate trails its overall recommendation strength.

Executive Summary

Fidelity holds dominant recommendation power in the Online Financial Advisors category. The benchmark shows 81.4% valid recommendation coverage in September 2026, meaning Fidelity received a valid recommendation in 408 of 501 qualified observations. That is the highest coverage of any tracked brand and the third consecutive month Fidelity has led the category.

The brand's raw mention presence reached 99.6% in September 2026, up from 98.4% in July 2026. Fidelity is mentioned in nearly every qualified response. The more important signal is placement: Fidelity's top-three rate rose to 59.9% from 55.1%, and its rank-one rate reached 42.5%, up from 40.2%. The analysis found 213 first-position recommendations in September 2026, the highest in the series.

Fidelity's coverage declined 2.5 points from 83.9% in July 2026, a move within normal month-to-month variation. The gap to Charles Schwab narrowed to 1.2 points, the tightest spread between the top two brands across the July-to-September series. Charles Schwab holds 80.2% coverage and a 51.5% top-three rate, but its rank-one rate is 10.4%, far below Fidelity's 42.5%. Close coverage can hide very different first-position rates.

The strongest platform signal for Fidelity is Copilot, where the brand recorded 96.6% valid recommendation coverage and an 82.0% top-three rate. ChatGPT also shows strong recommendation behavior with 92.2% coverage and a 62.8% rank-one rate. AI Overviews delivered the highest absolute recommendation volume, with 105 valid recommendations and a 54.1% rank-one rate.

The clearest platform gap is Gemini, where Fidelity's valid recommendation coverage is 53.7%, well below its category-leading 81.4%. Gemini also produced the lowest positive sentiment share for Fidelity at 53.7%, compared to 96.6% on Copilot and 94.1% on ChatGPT. The observed data suggests Gemini surfaces a higher proportion of neutral or comparative framing for Fidelity than other platforms.

All 501 qualified observations in September 2026 fell into the Brand Recommendation cluster. The benchmark does not yet contain qualified observations in Pricing & Value or Multi-Brand Comparison classes, so Fidelity's positioning on cost perception and head-to-head comparisons remains unmeasured in the public series.

What Fidelity Is Winning

Questions This Section Answers

  • Which placement measures put Fidelity ahead of every tracked competitor?
  • How does Fidelity's rank-one rate compare with Charles Schwab and Vanguard?
  • Where is Fidelity's recommendation behavior strongest by platform?

Fidelity holds the strongest recommendation position in the category by every placement measure. The benchmark shows 81.4% valid recommendation coverage, 59.9% top-three rate, and 42.5% rank-one rate in September 2026. No other tracked brand exceeds 80.2% coverage, 51.5% top-three rate, or 10.4% rank-one rate.

The brand's rank-one dominance is the clearest win. Fidelity is the first recommendation in 42.5% of qualified observations, more than four times Charles Schwab's 10.4% rate. The analysis found 213 first-position recommendations for Fidelity in September 2026, compared to 52 for Charles Schwab and 16 for Vanguard.

Fidelity's top-three rate improved from 55.1% in July 2026 to 59.9% in September 2026, even as its overall coverage declined slightly. The distinction is that Fidelity's placement quality strengthened while its coverage remained stable within normal variation. The brand is being mentioned in nearly every response and placed at the top more often.

Copilot is Fidelity's strongest platform by recommendation behavior. The brand recorded 96.6% valid recommendation coverage and an 82.0% top-three rate on Copilot, with 50 rank-one placements out of 89 observations. ChatGPT also shows strong first-position strength with a 62.8% rank-one rate.

Fidelity's net sentiment score of 0.8737 reflects overwhelmingly positive framing. The brand recorded 437 positive mentions, 61 neutral mentions, and 1 negative mention across 501 qualified observations. Negative framing is effectively absent from the public evidence layer.

Where Fidelity Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why is Gemini Fidelity's weakest platform for valid recommendation coverage?
  • What does the narrowing coverage gap with Charles Schwab mean for Fidelity's lead?
  • Which buyer-intent clusters are missing from the benchmark, and what does that leave unmeasured?

Fidelity's clearest gap is on Gemini. The brand's valid recommendation coverage on Gemini is 53.7%, compared to 96.6% on Copilot, 92.2% on ChatGPT, and 86.1% on AI Overviews. Gemini also produced the lowest positive sentiment share for Fidelity at 53.7%, with 18 neutral mentions and 1 negative mention out of 41 observations. The source pattern may indicate that Gemini surfaces more comparative or context-heavy framing for Fidelity than other platforms.

The second gap is the narrowing lead over Charles Schwab. Fidelity's coverage declined 2.5 points from July 2026 while Charles Schwab's declined only 0.6 points. The gap between the two brands is now 1.2 points, down from 3.1 points in July 2026. Charles Schwab's top-three rate rose 4.4 points to 51.5%, closing part of the placement gap. Fidelity still holds a decisive rank-one advantage, but the coverage margin is the tightest in the series.

The third gap is the absence of qualified observations in Pricing & Value and Multi-Brand Comparison clusters. The benchmark measures Brand Recommendation discovery only. Fidelity's positioning when buyers ask about fees, costs, or head-to-head comparisons is not captured in the public series. This is a measurement gap rather than a performance gap, but it limits the benchmark's ability to show where Fidelity may be losing ground in commercial-intent prompts.

Fidelity's coverage on Perplexity is 71.7%, below its category-leading 81.4%. The brand recorded 66 valid recommendations out of 92 Perplexity observations, with a 35.9% top-three rate and a 17.4% rank-one rate. Perplexity represents a smaller share of total qualified observations, but the platform gap is material relative to Fidelity's overall position.

Biggest Opportunity

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why is the Gemini coverage gap Fidelity's biggest opportunity rather than a placement problem?
  • What would closing the Gemini gap require from Fidelity's owned answer and citation layers?

Fidelity's biggest opportunity is closing the Gemini recommendation gap. Gemini produced 41 qualified observations in September 2026, and Fidelity's coverage on that platform is 53.7%, roughly 28 points below its category-leading 81.4%. The brand already holds strong rank-one placement on Gemini at 39.0%, so the gap is in coverage rather than first-position strength. Improving Fidelity's presence in Gemini responses would extend the brand's recommendation footprint without requiring a change in placement quality.

The path from reference to recommendation on Gemini runs through the owned answer layer and citation architecture. Fidelity's public evidence layer is already strong enough to support 96.6% coverage on Copilot and 92.2% on ChatGPT. The Gemini gap suggests the platform is retrieving or synthesizing from a different source set, or weighting neutral and comparative framing more heavily. Mapping which sources Gemini cites for online financial advisor prompts would show where Fidelity's evidence layer is thin.

Competitive Landscape

Questions This Section Answers

  • How do Fidelity's top-three and rank-one rates compare with Charles Schwab and Vanguard?
  • What does the average recommended rank show about recommendation concentration at the top of the category?

Fidelity holds the strongest recommendation-stage position in the Online Financial Advisors category, with Charles Schwab and Vanguard as the closest challengers. Fidelity leads on coverage, top-three rate, and rank-one rate, but the coverage gap to Charles Schwab is the narrowest in the series.

Fidelity's 59.88% top-three rate and 42.51% rank-one rate place it first in the category by a wide margin on placement quality. Charles Schwab holds second position with 51.50% top-three and 10.38% rank-one, showing that close coverage does not translate to equal first-position strength. Vanguard ranks third with 43.71% top-three and 3.19% rank-one. The remaining brands hold top-three rates below 6%, indicating that recommendation concentration at the top of the category is high.

Prompt Evidence

Copilot / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "Who is the best Wealth Management company?" Result: Fidelity received a valid recommendation in 96.6% of Copilot observations and appeared in the top three in 82.0% of them, the strongest platform-level recommendation signal in the benchmark.

Gemini / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "What is the best rated wealth management company?" Result: Fidelity's valid recommendation coverage on Gemini was 53.7%, well below its category-leading 81.4%, with 18 neutral mentions out of 41 observations.

ChatGPT / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "Who are the top five financial advisors?" Result: Fidelity recorded a 92.2% valid recommendation coverage and a 62.8% rank-one rate on ChatGPT, with 32 first-position recommendations out of 51 observations.

AI Overviews / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "What is the best financial planning company?" Result: Fidelity received 105 valid recommendations on AI Overviews, the highest absolute count across platforms, with a 54.1% rank-one rate.

Phase 1: AI Market Discovery Audit Map Fidelity's prompt-level recommendation patterns across all six AI surface families, with focused analysis on the Gemini coverage gap and the narrowing margin over Charles Schwab.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Identify which high-intent prompt clusters and platform surfaces offer the clearest path from Fidelity's current 81.4% coverage to stronger recommendation conversion on Gemini and Perplexity.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Strengthen Fidelity's owned content so AI systems retrieve clear, structured, recommendation-ready answers for online financial advisor prompts, particularly on platforms where neutral framing is more common.

Phase 4: Citation / Authority Layer Development Map the public evidence layer that AI systems cite for online financial advisor prompts and close source gaps on Gemini and Perplexity, where Fidelity's coverage trails its category-leading position.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track Fidelity's coverage, top-three rate, rank-one rate, and sentiment by platform and cluster each month to detect movement against Charles Schwab and Vanguard before it shows up in the aggregate benchmark.

Why This Matters

AI presence alone is not enough. Fidelity is mentioned in 99.6% of qualified responses, but its recommendation coverage is 81.4%. The 18-point difference between raw mention presence and valid recommendation coverage represents responses where Fidelity appears but is not shortlisted. In a category where buyers increasingly ask AI systems to recommend an advisor, being mentioned without being recommended is not a win.

The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers. Fidelity's rank-one dominance shows the brand can win the first-position recommendation when it is shortlisted. The Gemini gap and the narrowing lead over Charles Schwab show where that strength is uneven. Closing those gaps requires understanding which prompts, pages, and sources drive recommendation conversion on each platform, then building the owned answer layer and citation architecture to match.

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why does Fidelity's 61 neutral mentions matter more than its high raw mention count?
  • What does Fidelity's 0.8737 sentiment score actually measure?

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions

Fidelity's sentiment score for September 2026 is 0.8737. The brand recorded 437 positive mentions, 61 neutral mentions, and 1 negative mention across 499 total mentions. The score reflects overwhelmingly positive framing in AI-generated responses.

This matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A brand mentioned 499 times with mixed framing is not in the same position as a brand mentioned 499 times with consistently positive framing. Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal.

Counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement. Fidelity's 61 neutral mentions represent responses where the brand appears as context or comparison rather than as a recommendation. Those mentions do not carry the same buyer-choice weight as a positive recommendation. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, because it separates recommendation strength from raw presence.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of Fidelity's position in the LLM Authority Index AI Market Discovery Index for Online Financial Advisors, reporting on September 2026 data.
  2. The reporting window covers September 2026, with comparisons to July 2026 and August 2026 where the benchmark provides series data.
  3. Six AI surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. All six had at least one qualified observation in September 2026.
  4. The September 2026 collection began with 800 prompt-surface observations. Of those, 800 mentioned a tracked brand or competitor, 593 were relevant to the online financial advisor vertical, and 207 were irrelevant.
  5. The public benchmark uses 501 qualified observations as the denominator for all brand-level percentages. This is down from 671 in July 2026 and 660 in August 2026.
  6. Ten brands were tracked in September 2026: Fidelity, Charles Schwab, Vanguard, SoFi, Betterment LLC, Empower, Wealthfront Corporation, Facet, Ellevest, and Zoe Financial.
  7. The public benchmark contains one qualified buyer-intent cluster, Brand Recommendation. Pricing & Value and Multi-Brand Comparison clusters had zero qualified observations in September 2026.
  8. Stage 0 extraction retained the query, AI surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and, where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources.
  9. A mention is counted when a tracked brand appears in a qualified AI response, regardless of whether the brand is recommended. Fidelity's raw mention presence rate was 99.60% in September 2026.
  10. A valid recommendation is counted when the dataset marks the brand as recommended or shortlisted in a qualified response. Fidelity recorded 408 valid recommendations in September 2026.
  11. Beginning in September 2026, three brands appear under legal-entity names: Betterment LLC, Facet, and Wealthfront Corporation. The prior Betterment, Facet Wealth, and Wealthfront series do not continue into September 2026. This is a tracking change, not a brand disappearance.
  12. Source presence is evidence about the information environment. It is not automatically proof that a source caused a recommendation. A change in recommendation coverage reflects what AI surfaces returned for the tested prompts in this period and does not by itself establish why that change occurred.

See Where AI Is Recommending Your Brand

The public benchmark shows Fidelity's category-level position. A company-level AI visibility audit maps the specific prompts, competitors, platforms, and sources driving Fidelity's recommendation coverage, and identifies where the brand is mentioned but not shortlisted. The audit shows which high-intent prompts Fidelity wins, which competitor takes the recommendation when Fidelity loses, and which public sources shape the answers AI systems return.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
