Answer Capsule
Thimble holds 34.76% valid recommendation coverage in the September 2026 Professional Liability Insurance benchmark, ranking fourth of ten tracked brands. The company is visible in 44.21% of qualified observations and converts that presence into valid recommendations at a strong rate, but it rarely reaches the top of AI answer lists, with a 13.73% top-three rate and a 2.15% rank-one rate. Thimble's clearest win is its 0.8738 net sentiment score, the highest framing quality in the tracked set. Its clearest weakness is placement depth: AI systems name Thimble often but position it behind The Hartford and Next Insurance. The clearest opportunity is converting mid-list mentions into top-three placements inside the Best Professional Liability Insurance Providers cluster.

Executive Summary
Thimble is a visible, well-framed, mid-list brand in AI-generated professional liability insurance recommendations. The September 2026 LLM Authority Index benchmark recorded Thimble in 44.21% of qualified observations and inside a valid recommendation shortlist in 34.76% of them. That conversion rate is healthy: roughly four of every five appearances become a valid recommendation. The problem is not whether Thimble gets named. The problem is where it lands once named.
Placement is where Thimble separates from the category leaders. The Hartford holds a 53.43% top-three rate and a 34.12% rank-one rate. Next Insurance holds a 40.56% top-three rate and a 15.88% rank-one rate. Thimble sits at 13.73% and 2.15% respectively. Thimble is present in the buyer conversation but is rarely the answer the buyer sees first.
Sentiment is Thimble's strongest signal. The benchmark recorded 180 positive mentions, 26 neutral mentions, and zero negative mentions, producing a net sentiment score of 0.8738, the highest in the tracked set. AI systems frame Thimble positively when they mention it. That framing quality is an asset the brand can build on.
The strongest cluster is Best Professional Liability Insurance Providers, the only cluster with qualified observations in September 2026. All 466 qualified observations fell into this single Brand Recommendation class. The Professional Liability Insurance Comparisons and Professional Liability Insurance Pricing and Costs clusters were empty, so the public benchmark cannot yet show how AI systems position Thimble on price or in direct head-to-head comparison.
Platform behavior varies. Thimble's strongest platform signal by recommendation behavior is Google AI Mode, where it recorded a 43.80% valid recommendation coverage rate and a 13.22% top-three rate. Copilot also showed strength at 47.54% coverage. ChatGPT recorded 32.14% coverage, and Perplexity recorded 20.83%. Google AI Overviews recorded 29.17% coverage. The clearest platform gap is Perplexity, where Thimble's coverage fell well below its category average.
The month-over-month picture is stable rather than dramatic. Thimble declined 5.7 points from its July 2026 baseline of 40.5% coverage, a movement the benchmark classified as within normal range. The category as a whole pulled back, with The Hartford, Next Insurance, and Progressive Commercial all declining beyond their normal range. Thimble held its position while larger brands lost ground.
What Thimble Is Winning
Questions This Section Answers
- Why does Thimble have the highest net sentiment score in the professional liability insurance benchmark?
- How often does a Thimble mention convert into a valid recommendation?
- Which platforms are most receptive to Thimble?
Thimble's clearest win is framing quality. At 0.8738, its net sentiment score is the highest among all ten tracked brands, ahead of Biberk Business Insurance at 0.8409 and Hiscox Usa at 0.8276. The benchmark recorded zero negative mentions for Thimble across 466 qualified observations. When AI systems describe Thimble, they describe it favorably.
The second win is recommendation conversion. Thimble converts 44.21% raw mention presence into 34.76% valid recommendation coverage, meaning roughly 79% of its appearances become valid recommendations. That ratio is competitive with The Hartford and stronger than several larger brands. Thimble is not being mentioned as a passing reference. It is being shortlisted.
The third win is platform strength on Google AI Mode and Copilot. On Google AI Mode, Thimble recorded 43.80% valid recommendation coverage, its highest across all six platforms. On Copilot, it recorded 47.54% coverage. Both figures sit above Thimble's overall category coverage, indicating that these surfaces are more receptive to the brand than the category average.
The fourth win is stability. Thimble's 5.7-point decline from July 2026 was the smallest movement among the continuously tracked brands that declined, and the benchmark classified it as within normal range. In a month when the category leader fell 16.1 points from August, Thimble's position held.
Where Thimble Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps
Questions This Section Answers
- Why does Thimble appear on shortlists but rarely reach the top positions?
- How far behind The Hartford and Next Insurance is Thimble's placement?
- What limits Thimble's recommendation coverage on Perplexity?
Thimble's central gap is placement depth. The brand appears in valid recommendation shortlists at a healthy rate but reaches the first three positions in only 13.73% of qualified observations and the first position in only 2.15%. The Hartford reaches the top three more than three times as often and holds the first position more than fifteen times as often. Next Insurance reaches the top three nearly three times as often.
This is a displacement problem, not a presence problem. When AI systems build a professional liability insurance shortlist, Thimble is frequently on it but rarely at the top. The brands occupying those top positions are The Hartford and Next Insurance, which together hold the strongest recommendation-stage positions in the category.
The second gap is Perplexity. Thimble recorded 20.83% valid recommendation coverage on Perplexity, well below its 34.76% category average and far below its Google AI Mode performance. Perplexity recorded 10 valid recommendations for Thimble against 53 on Google AI Mode. The platform is not rejecting Thimble, but it is recommending the brand at roughly half the rate of the strongest surface.
The third gap is cluster coverage. All 466 qualified observations fell into the Best Professional Liability Insurance Providers cluster. The Professional Liability Insurance Comparisons and Professional Liability Insurance Pricing and Costs clusters produced zero qualified observations in September 2026. Thimble cannot be evaluated on how AI systems position it against named competitors or on price, because the public benchmark does not yet contain those prompts. This is a measurement gap that affects every tracked brand equally, but it means Thimble's comparison and pricing positioning inside AI answers is currently unmeasured.
The fourth gap is the distance to the category leader. Thimble's 34.76% coverage sits 31.98 points behind The Hartford's 66.74%. The gap to third-place Hiscox Usa is 4.12 points, and the gap to fifth-place Progressive Commercial is 0.43 points. Thimble's position in the middle of the standings is narrow in both directions.
Biggest Opportunity
Questions This Section Answers
- What is the clearest path for Thimble to move from mid-list mentions into top-three placements?
- Which attributes drive first-position selection in the Best Professional Liability Insurance Providers cluster?
Thimble's biggest opportunity is converting its mid-list recommendation presence into top-three placements inside the Best Professional Liability Insurance Providers cluster. The brand already earns 162 valid recommendations and 64 top-three placements in September 2026. The distance between those two numbers, 98 recommendations that placed fourth or lower, represents the clearest path from reference to recommendation.
This is a placement problem with a specific shape. Thimble is being recommended, but the attributes AI systems associate with it are not pushing it ahead of The Hartford or Next Insurance in the final ordering. Closing that gap means strengthening the public evidence layer around the attributes that drive first-position selection: coverage breadth, speed of quote, small business fit, and the specific prompt language buyers use when asking which provider to choose.
Competitive Landscape

Average recommended rank covers rank-eligible recommendations only.
Thimble ranks fourth by top-three rate and holds the highest sentiment score in the table. Its average recommended rank of 3.70 places it behind the three brands above it and ahead of the six below. The table shows a brand that is consistently recommended in the middle of the list, framed more positively than any competitor, but rarely elevated to the first position.
Prompt Evidence

Why This Matters
Questions This Section Answers
- What does Thimble's placement gap mean for buyers who ask AI systems which professional liability insurer to choose?
- Why is strong framing not enough to win the recommendation moment?
AI presence alone does not win the buyer. Thimble is named in nearly half of qualified observations and recommended in more than a third, but it reaches the first position in only 2.15% of them. A buyer who asks an AI system which professional liability insurer to choose sees Thimble on the list, framed positively, but positioned behind The Hartford and Next Insurance. That ordering shapes the shortlist before the buyer ever visits a website.
The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers that determine placement. Thimble's framing quality is already the strongest in the category. The work ahead is making that quality count at the top of the list rather than the middle.

Sentiment Score
Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions
For Thimble in September 2026: (180 × 1 + 26 × 0 + 0 × -1) / 206 = 0.8738.
This matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A brand can appear in hundreds of AI answers and still lose the buyer if those appearances are neutral references, cautionary notes, or competitor comparison anchors. Counting every mention as a win is bad measurement.
Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal in commercial value. Thimble's 206 mentions include 180 positive and 26 neutral, with no negative framing. That distribution is unusually clean and indicates that AI systems describe Thimble favorably whenever they describe it at all.
Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility. Thimble's high sentiment score does not mean the brand is winning the recommendation moment. It means the brand is being framed well when it appears. Placement and sentiment are separate signals, and Thimble's placement lags its sentiment.

Methodology
- This report is a benchmark-based analysis of Thimble's position in AI-generated professional liability insurance recommendations. It is not a client result and does not imply that any remediation work has been performed.
- The reporting window is September 2026, with July 2026 and August 2026 used as comparison months where the benchmark provides them.
- Six AI/search surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode.
- The September 2026 collection began with 800 prompt-surface observations across 542 unique questions. Of those, 493 were relevant to the vertical and 466 survived qualification to form the public denominator.
- Ten brands were tracked in the September 2026 competitor universe: The Hartford, Next Insurance, Hiscox Usa, Thimble, Progressive Commercial, Chubb, Travelers, Biberk Business Insurance, CNA, and Embroker.
- Three public high-intent clusters were defined: Best Professional Liability Insurance Providers, Professional Liability Insurance Comparisons, and Professional Liability Insurance Pricing and Costs. Only the first cluster contained qualified observations in September 2026.
- Stage 0 extraction retained the query, AI/search surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and, where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources for each observation.
- A mention is counted when a tracked brand appears anywhere in an AI-generated answer to a qualified prompt, regardless of position or framing.
- A valid recommendation is counted when a tracked brand appears in a recommendation shortlist with positive or neutral framing and a rank position between one and ten.
- Top-three rate, rank-one rate, and average recommended rank are calculated only over rank-eligible recommendations. Average recommended rank is reported as N/A for brands with no rank-eligible recommendations.
- All percentage metrics use the 466 qualified observations as the denominator, not the 800 raw prompt-surface observations. Irrelevant and reserved prompts are excluded.
- A naming variance affects two tracked entities. Hiscox and biBERK appeared in the July and August 2026 measurements but not in September 2026, while Hiscox Usa and Biberk Business Insurance appeared in September 2026 in their place. The benchmark treats this as a labeling shift and reports both entities separately. Thimble is unaffected by this variance.
- Month-over-month movement identifies changes worth investigating. It does not by itself establish the cause of those changes.
