Answer Capsule

Canva became the category leader in AI-generated recommendations for resume builders in September 2026, holding 56.8% valid recommendation coverage across 637 qualified observations. The brand leads on consistency rather than momentum: coverage eased 3.5 points from July 2026 while its rank-one rate rose 5.5 points to 14.0%, the highest first-position rate among the ten tracked brands. The clearest win is first-choice placement across Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini. The clearest weakness is Copilot, where Canva holds 40.7% recommendation coverage but has never been placed first. The clearest opportunity is converting its 73.2% raw mention presence into stronger recommendation coverage in the prompts where it appears but is not shortlisted.

Executive Summary

Canva holds the strongest overall position in the resume-builder category in September 2026. The benchmark shows 73.2% raw mention presence, the highest in the tracked set, and 56.8% valid recommendation coverage, which moved Canva into the category lead after Kickresume declined 8.1 points from its July baseline. The leadership change reflects Canva's stability more than a surge: its own coverage dipped 3.5 points from 60.3% in July 2026, a movement within normal month-to-month variation.

The framing data is unusually strong. Canva recorded 384 positive mentions, 52 neutral mentions, and 30 negative mentions, producing a net sentiment score of 0.7597. Only 4.7% of qualified observations framed the brand negatively, the second-lowest negative visibility rate among the ten tracked brands. AI systems rarely describe Canva in cautionary terms.

Placement quality is where Canva separates from the field. Its rank-one rate rose from 8.5% in July 2026 to 14.0% in September 2026, the highest in the category, and its top-three rate held at 27.5%. Kickresume, by contrast, posted a higher top-three rate of 33.6% but a lower rank-one rate of 10.2%, meaning Canva is chosen first more often even when it appears in fewer shortlists.

The strongest platform signal is Google AI Mode. Canva holds 57.7% recommendation coverage there with a 17.3% rank-one rate, and the platform carries the largest share of category opportunity. Google AI Overviews is even stronger on placement: 67.1% recommendation coverage and a 23.5% rank-one rate. Gemini adds a 64.0% coverage rate with a 13.5% rank-one rate.

The clearest platform gap is Copilot. Canva appears in 80.3% of Copilot observations but converts only 40.7% into valid recommendations, and its rank-one rate on that platform is 0.0%. The brand is present in the conversation without being chosen first. Perplexity shows a similar pattern at a smaller scale: 60.0% presence, 38.9% recommendation coverage, and a 7.8% rank-one rate.

The clearest cluster gap is structural rather than competitive. All 637 qualified observations in the September 2026 public series fell into the Brand Recommendation class. Pricing and head-to-head comparison clusters produced zero qualified observations, so no brand, including Canva, can be assessed on price or direct comparison prompts in this benchmark. The collection contains 114 comparison analysis responses and 21 pricing analysis responses that did not qualify into brand-level reporting.

What Canva Is Winning

Questions This Section Answers

  • Which placement metrics does Canva lead in the resume-builder category?
  • How does Canva's framing quality compare to other tracked resume builders?

Canva holds the highest raw mention presence in the category at 73.2%, up 0.3 points from July 2026. The brand is the most consistently surfaced option across the tracked AI and search surfaces.

Canva holds the highest rank-one rate among tracked brands at 14.0%, up from 8.5% in July 2026. This is the clearest evidence that AI systems place Canva first more often than any competitor, including Kickresume, which leads on top-three appearances.

Canva leads on Google AI Overviews with 67.1% valid recommendation coverage and a 23.5% rank-one rate, the strongest single-platform placement profile in the dataset. It also leads on Gemini at 64.0% coverage and holds 57.7% coverage on Google AI Mode, the platform carrying the largest share of category opportunity.

Framing quality is a genuine strength. Canva's net sentiment score of 0.7597 sits behind only Kickresume's 0.8536, and its negative visibility rate of 4.7% is the second lowest in the category. The brand carries 384 positive mentions against 30 negative mentions.

Where Canva Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • Where does Canva convert presence into recommendations least effectively?
  • Why does Canva's top-three rate trail Kickresume's?
  • Which buyer-intent clusters remain unmeasurable for Canva in this benchmark?

The largest gap is conversion, not presence. Canva appears in 73.2% of qualified observations but converts 56.8% into valid recommendations, a 16.4-point gap between being mentioned and being shortlisted. Resume.io shows the same pattern more severely, with 70.5% presence and 38.1% coverage, but Canva's gap matters more because it sits at the top of the category where each lost recommendation is a lost first-choice position.

Copilot is the weakest platform. Canva holds 80.3% presence there but only 40.7% recommendation coverage, and its rank-one rate is 0.0%. Kickresume converts 61.7% of Copilot observations into recommendations with a 4.9% rank-one rate, and Resume.io converts 24.7% with a 6.2% rank-one rate. Canva is visible on Copilot without being selected, which suggests the platform is synthesizing Canva as context rather than as a recommendation.

Perplexity shows a milder version of the same issue. Canva holds 60.0% presence and 38.9% coverage with a 7.8% rank-one rate, while Resume.io converts 56.7% of Perplexity observations into recommendations with a 14.4% rank-one rate. On this surface, a smaller competitor is converting presence into placement more effectively than the category leader.

Canva's top-three rate of 27.5% trails Kickresume's 33.6%. Kickresume appears in more shortlists even though it wins fewer first positions. If AI systems increasingly present three-option shortlists, Canva's absence from the second and third slots in those responses is a structural risk to its lead.

The benchmark cannot yet show how Canva performs on pricing or head-to-head comparison prompts. Both clusters produced zero qualified observations in September 2026, so any competitive claim about price framing or direct comparison would be unsupported by this dataset.

Biggest Opportunity

Questions This Section Answers

  • Which platforms offer the clearest path to closing Canva's presence-to-recommendation gap?
  • How would raising Canva's top-three rate change its shortlist position?

The clearest path is closing the presence-to-recommendation gap on Copilot and Perplexity, where Canva is mentioned far more often than it is recommended. Copilot alone shows a 39.6-point gap between presence and recommendation coverage, and a 0.0% rank-one rate. These are the two surfaces where the brand's public evidence layer appears to be retrievable but not persuasive enough to earn a shortlist position.

The second-order opportunity sits in the top-three rate. Raising Canva's top-three rate toward Kickresume's 33.6% would put the brand in more multi-option shortlists without requiring a change in first-position behavior. Because the benchmark shows Canva already winning rank-one placement on Google surfaces, the marginal gain is concentrated in the second and third recommendation slots on the platforms where it currently under-converts.

Competitive Landscape

Questions This Section Answers

  • How do Kickresume, Canva, and Resume.io differ on top-three rate, rank-one rate, and average recommended rank?
  • Which brand leads on sentiment, and where does Canva rank?

Kickresume and Canva hold the strongest recommendation-stage positions in the resume-builder category, with Resume.io a stable third. Canva leads on valid recommendation coverage and rank-one rate, while Kickresume leads on top-three rate and net sentiment.

Canva sits second on top-three rate but first on rank-one rate, which means it appears in fewer shortlists than Kickresume while winning the top position more often when it does appear. Resume.io holds the best average recommended rank at 2.4519, slightly ahead of Kickresume and Canva, indicating that when it earns a recommendation it tends to land near the top.

Prompt Evidence

Google AI Mode / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "resume ai" Result: Canva holds 57.7% recommendation coverage and a 17.3% rank-one rate on this surface, the strongest placement profile in the category.

Copilot / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "resume builder" Result: Canva appears in 80.3% of Copilot observations but converts only 40.7% into valid recommendations, with a 0.0% rank-one rate.

Perplexity / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "resume templates free download" Result: Canva holds 60.0% presence and 38.9% recommendation coverage, while Resume.io converts 56.7% of Perplexity observations into recommendations.

Gemini / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "Which AI agent is best for resume building?" Result: Canva holds 64.0% recommendation coverage and a 13.5% rank-one rate, with a net sentiment score of 0.8857 on the platform.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Market Discovery Audit Map every prompt where Canva appears without earning a recommendation, with priority on Copilot and Perplexity, and identify which competitors capture the shortlist positions Canva loses.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Build a prompt-level plan that targets the 16.4-point presence-to-recommendation gap and the second and third shortlist slots where Canva's top-three rate trails Kickresume.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Strengthen the pages and answer assets that AI systems retrieve when forming resume-builder shortlists, with emphasis on the comparison and pricing content that the current benchmark cannot yet measure.

Phase 4: Citation / Authority Layer Development Develop the public evidence layer that supports retrievability on Copilot and Perplexity, where Canva's presence is high but its recommendation conversion is weak.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track coverage, top-three rate, rank-one rate, and sentiment by platform each month to confirm whether the Copilot and Perplexity gaps close as the category continues to shift.

Why This Matters

AI presence alone does not win the buyer. Canva is mentioned in 73.2% of qualified observations but recommended in 56.8%, and on Copilot the gap widens to nearly 40 points. A buyer who asks an AI assistant which resume builder to use does not see the mention count. They see the shortlist, and they see who is named first.

The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers that shape those shortlists. Canva already holds the strongest first-position rate in the category and the second-strongest framing quality. The work ahead is converting its unmatched visibility into recommendation coverage on the platforms where it currently appears without being chosen.

Sentiment Score

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions

For Canva in September 2026: (384 × 1 + 52 × 0 + 30 × -1) / 466 = 0.7597.

This matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A brand can appear in hundreds of AI responses and still lose the buyer if most of those appearances are neutral references, cautionary notes, or comparison anchors. Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal, and counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, because it separates the responses that advance a brand from the responses that merely describe it.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of Canva's position in the Resume Builders category, drawn from the LLM Authority Index AI Market Discovery Index for September 2026. It is not a client engagement result.
  2. The reporting window is September 2026, with July 2026 as the baseline month and August 2026 as the intermediate month in the public series.
  3. Six canonical AI surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, and AI Mode.
  4. The September 2026 run began with 800 prompt-surface observations and 530 unique questions. Of those, 800 mentioned a tracked brand or competitor, 756 were relevant, 44 were irrelevant, and 637 qualified observations form the public denominator for all brand-level metrics.
  5. Ten brands were tracked: Canva, Kickresume, Resume.io, Enhancv, Novoresume, Zety, Resume Genius, VisualCV, MyPerfectResume, and LiveCareer.
  6. All 637 qualified observations fell into the Brand Recommendation buyer-intent class. The Pricing and Value and Multi-Brand Comparison classes produced zero qualified observations in the public series, so no brand-level pricing or head-to-head comparison metrics are reported.
  7. A mention is any qualified observation where the brand appears in any form. A valid recommendation is a qualified observation where the brand appears in a valid recommendation shortlist. Top-three and rank-one rates are calculated within the same 637-observation denominator.
  8. Average recommended rank covers rank-eligible recommendations only. A brand with no rank-eligible recommendations is shown as not ranked in the competitive table and N/A in the metrics table.
  9. Net sentiment is calculated as positive mentions minus negative mentions divided by total mentions, scored from -1 to 1. It measures framing quality in AI responses, not customer sentiment.
  10. The benchmark does not measure market share, attributable sales, organic-search ranking, social mention volume, or private and sponsored channels. A metric movement alone does not establish causality.
  11. Source presence is treated as evidence about the information environment, not as proof that a source caused a recommendation.
  12. The qualified denominator grew across the series, from 521 observations in July 2026 to 599 in August 2026 to 637 in September 2026, which changes the base for all percentage calculations.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
