Key Takeaways

  • TAMKO appeared in 31.91% of qualified roofing observations but reached valid recommendation shortlists in only 10.58%, showing a large gap between visibility and selection.
  • Its recommendation placement is weak overall, with a 2.23% top-three rate, a 0.74% rank-one rate, and an average recommended rank of 4.47.
  • Copilot is TAMKO’s strongest platform, delivering its best recommendation coverage and top-three performance compared with other tracked surfaces.
  • The clearest opportunity is to turn existing brand mentions into shortlist eligibility in direct recommendation prompts, especially on Copilot and AI Mode.

Answer Capsule

TAMKO holds a narrow position in AI-generated roofing recommendations for September 2026, appearing in 31.91% of qualified observations but converting only 10.58% into valid recommendation shortlists. The brand shows visibility without recommendation conversion: it is named often enough to be part of the category conversation, but it is rarely chosen as a top-three option and almost never as the first recommendation. Its clearest win is a low negative framing rate and a modest top-three presence on Copilot. Its clearest weakness is a rank-one rate of 0.74% and an average recommended rank of 4.47, meaning that when TAMKO does earn a recommendation, it sits well outside the buyer shortlist. The clearest opportunity is converting its existing mention presence into shortlist eligibility within the Brand Recommendation cluster.

Executive Summary

TAMKO is visible in AI-generated roofing answers but is not being recommended at the rate its presence would suggest. The September 2026 LLM Authority Index benchmark recorded TAMKO in 172 of 539 qualified observations, a raw mention presence rate of 31.91%, yet the brand appeared in a valid recommendation shortlist in only 57 of those observations, a valid recommendation coverage of 10.58%. That gap between being named and being chosen is the central finding of this report.

The framing around TAMKO is not the problem. The benchmark recorded 67 positive mentions, 103 neutral mentions, and 2 negative mentions, producing a net sentiment score of 0.3779. That is a positive framing profile, though it is the lowest among the top seven tracked brands and well behind Malarkey at 0.8676 and Atlas Roofing at 0.7740. TAMKO is being described accurately and without meaningful negativity, but accurate description is not the same as recommendation.

The strongest cluster for TAMKO is the only cluster with qualified observations in the current public series: Brand Recommendation, which captures direct asks for a recommended roofing manufacturer, installer, or product. Within that cluster TAMKO recorded a top-three rate of 2.23% and a rank-one rate of 0.74%, meaning that in the overwhelming majority of cases where TAMKO earns a valid recommendation, it is placed fourth or lower.

The strongest platform signal for TAMKO is Copilot, where the brand recorded a valid recommendation coverage of 22.54% on 16 valid recommendations, a top-three rate of 9.86%, and a rank-one rate of 2.82%. Copilot is also where TAMKO's average recommended rank is strongest at 3.25. This is a narrow but real pocket of recommendation strength.

The clearest platform gap is Perplexity, where TAMKO recorded 5 valid recommendations but zero top-three placements and zero rank-one placements, and ChatGPT, where the brand recorded a single valid recommendation and no top-three or rank-one credit at all. On ChatGPT, TAMKO's 17 mentions were almost entirely neutral reference rather than recommendation.

The clearest structural gap is the absence of any qualified observations in the Pricing & Value or Multi-Brand Comparison clusters. The public benchmark cannot currently show how AI systems position TAMKO on cost or in head-to-head comparison, which are the two question types closest to a purchase decision. TAMKO's recommendation position in the one cluster that is measured is mid-list, and the clusters that would show whether that changes as buyers narrow their options are not yet covered.

What TAMKO Is Winning

Questions This Section Answers

  • Which platform gives TAMKO its strongest recommendation placement, and how does it compare to the brand's category-wide averages?
  • How clean is TAMKO's framing profile compared with its overall sentiment position?

TAMKO's evidence-backed wins are narrow but real. The brand holds a positive framing profile with only 2 negative mentions across 172 total mentions, a negative visibility rate of 0.37%. In a category where several competitors carry similar or higher negative counts on much larger mention bases, TAMKO's framing is clean.

TAMKO's strongest platform is Copilot. On Copilot, TAMKO recorded a valid recommendation coverage of 22.54%, a top-three rate of 9.86%, and a rank-one rate of 2.82%, with an average recommended rank of 3.25. Those figures are meaningfully above TAMKO's category-wide averages and represent the clearest pocket where the brand is being shortlisted rather than merely named.

TAMKO also holds a measurable top-three presence on AI Mode, where it recorded a top-three rate of 2.76% and a rank-one rate of 1.38%, and on AI Overviews, where it recorded a top-three rate of 0.65%. These are small numbers, but they show that TAMKO is not absent from recommendation placement across the Google surface family.

The brand's net sentiment score of 0.3779 is positive. TAMKO is not being framed as a cautionary option or a comparison anchor. The limitation is placement, not perception.

Where TAMKO Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why does TAMKO's mention presence not convert into shortlist recommendations?
  • Where does TAMKO's average recommended rank place it relative to GAF and Owens Corning?
  • On which platforms is TAMKO mentioned but never placed in a top-three recommendation?

TAMKO's clearest gap is recommendation conversion. The brand appears in 31.91% of qualified observations but earns valid recommendation credit in only 10.58%. That means roughly two out of every three times TAMKO is mentioned, it is mentioned as context, as a manufacturer reference, or as part of a broader list rather than as a recommended option. GAF converts 97.77% presence into 54.55% recommendation coverage, and Owens Corning converts 94.25% presence into 54.36%. TAMKO's conversion ratio is materially weaker than both.

The second gap is placement within the recommendation set. TAMKO's top-three rate of 2.23% and rank-one rate of 0.74% sit far below GAF at 44.34% and 24.12%, Owens Corning at 42.30% and 11.32%, and CertainTeed at 40.07% and 9.46%. Even against Malarkey, which has a comparable recommendation coverage of 42.67% but a top-three rate of only 4.08%, TAMKO is positioned lower. TAMKO's average recommended rank of 4.47 means that when the brand does earn rank credit, it typically lands in the fourth or fifth position, outside the shortlist a buyer is most likely to act on.

The third gap is platform absence. TAMKO recorded zero mentions on ChatGPT in a recommendation context despite 17 total mentions, and zero top-three placements on Perplexity despite 5 valid recommendations. On Gemini, TAMKO recorded 5 valid recommendations and zero top-three placements. These are surfaces where TAMKO is present as a name but not as a choice.

The fourth gap is competitive displacement. In the Brand Recommendation cluster, GAF captured the largest share of recommendation value, followed by Owens Corning and CertainTeed. TAMKO's captured share of AI opportunity was 0.45%, compared with GAF at 15.68%, Owens Corning at 13.25%, and CertainTeed at 7.19%. The gap is not marginal.

Biggest Opportunity

Questions This Section Answers

  • Which platforms and prompts give TAMKO the clearest path from mention to shortlist eligibility?
  • What kind of content and source coverage does TAMKO need to move from manufacturer reference to recommended option?

TAMKO's single biggest opportunity is converting its existing mention presence into shortlist eligibility within the Brand Recommendation cluster, specifically on Copilot and AI Mode, where the brand already shows measurable top-three behavior.

TAMKO is named in roughly one third of qualified observations. That is enough presence to work with. The problem is that the brand is being retrieved as a manufacturer reference rather than surfaced as a recommended option. The prompts driving this cluster are direct recommendation asks such as "What are the best shingles to buy?" and "How do you pick a good roofer?" Those are shortlist-forming questions, and TAMKO is currently appearing in the answer without appearing in the recommendation.

The path from reference to recommendation runs through the owned answer layer and the citation layer. TAMKO needs product and comparison content that AI systems can retrieve and synthesize into a recommendation context, and it needs third-party source coverage that supports the same framing. Copilot and AI Mode are the surfaces where the brand already has partial traction, which makes them the most efficient places to start.

Competitive Landscape

Questions This Section Answers

  • How far behind the top three brands is TAMKO on top-three rate and rank-one rate?
  • Which brands convert AI presence into shortlist placement, and where does TAMKO sit in that group?

GAF and Owens Corning hold recommendation-stage strength in the roofing category, with CertainTeed close behind and Malarkey holding strong sentiment but weaker placement. TAMKO sits in the mid-tier, visible but under-recommended relative to its mention presence.

TAMKO ranks fifth by top-three rate and shares the fourth-highest rank-one rate with Malarkey and Erie Home. The table shows a clear separation between the top three brands, which convert presence into shortlist placement at high rates, and the remaining seven, which are visible but rarely placed. TAMKO sits at the top of that second group on top-three rate but carries the lowest sentiment score of any brand above DECRA.

Prompt Evidence

Copilot / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "What are the best shingles to buy?" Result: TAMKO appeared in the valid recommendation set with top-three placement in a meaningful share of Copilot observations, contributing to the brand's strongest platform-level top-three rate of 9.86%.

ChatGPT / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "roofing shingles" Result: TAMKO was mentioned in 17 ChatGPT observations but earned only a single valid recommendation and no top-three or rank-one credit, appearing as a manufacturer reference rather than a recommended option.

Perplexity / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "How do you pick a good roofer?" Result: TAMKO recorded 5 valid recommendations on Perplexity but zero top-three placements and zero rank-one placements, with an average recommended rank that placed it outside the shortlist.

AI Mode / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "What are the best shingles to buy?" Result: TAMKO recorded a top-three rate of 2.76% and a rank-one rate of 1.38% on AI Mode, showing partial shortlist placement on the Google surface family.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Market Discovery Audit Map every prompt where TAMKO is mentioned but not recommended, and identify which competitors take the recommendation slot in those same answers.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Prioritize the Copilot and AI Mode surfaces where TAMKO already shows top-three behavior, and define the product, comparison, and trust content needed to move the brand from reference to shortlist.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Build TAMKO-owned pages that directly answer the shortlist-forming questions in the Brand Recommendation cluster, with clear product positioning that AI systems can retrieve and synthesize.

Phase 4: Citation / Authority Layer Development Cultivate third-party source coverage that supports TAMKO's recommendation framing, since source presence is part of the public evidence layer AI systems draw from.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track TAMKO's presence rate, valid recommendation coverage, top-three rate, rank-one rate, and sentiment month over month against the same competitor set.

Why This Matters

AI presence alone is not enough. TAMKO is named in roughly one third of qualified roofing observations, but it is chosen in only about one in ten. Buyers who ask an AI system for a roofing recommendation are getting an answer that includes TAMKO as a name and excludes it from the shortlist. That is a worse position than absence, because it means the brand is being considered and passed over.

The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers. TAMKO does not need broader visibility. It needs the content and source coverage that turns an accurate mention into a recommended option on the surfaces where buyers are forming their shortlist.

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why do TAMKO's 172 mentions overstate its actual recommendation position in AI answers?
  • What does TAMKO's mix of positive, neutral, and negative mentions reveal about its recommendation credit?

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions

For TAMKO in September 2026: (67 × 1 + 103 × 0 + 2 × -1) / 172 = 65 / 172 = 0.3779.

This matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. TAMKO's 172 mentions look substantial next to Malarkey's 287 or Atlas Roofing's 208, but the composition of those mentions is what determines whether the brand is being recommended or merely referenced. More than half of TAMKO's mentions are neutral, meaning the brand is being named without a directional recommendation signal.

Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal. Counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement. TAMKO's 103 neutral mentions are not recommendation credit, and treating them as such would overstate the brand's position in AI-generated answers.

Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility. TAMKO's positive framing profile is a genuine asset, but it does not compensate for a rank-one rate of 0.74%. The brand is being described well and placed poorly.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of TAMKO's position in AI-generated roofing recommendations for September 2026. It is not a client result and does not imply that any remediation work has been performed.
  2. The reporting window is September 2026, with comparison points from July 2026 and August 2026 where the LLM Authority Index public series provides them.
  3. Six AI/search surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. Grok observations were recorded separately in August 2026 and are not counted toward the six-family qualified surface breadth.
  4. The September 2026 run began with 800 source prompt-surface observations and produced 539 qualified benchmark observations after qualification. July 2026 produced 533 qualified observations from the same raw collection size.
  5. The competitor universe is ten tracked brands: Atlas Roofing, CertainTeed, DECRA, Erie Home, GAF, IKO, Malarkey, Owens Corning, Power Home Remodeling, and TAMKO.
  6. All qualified observations in the current public series fall into the Brand Recommendation cluster. The Pricing & Value and Multi-Brand Comparison clusters recorded zero qualified observations in July, August, and September 2026.
  7. The benchmark retains the query, AI/search surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and, where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources. Source presence is evidence about the information environment and is not automatically proof that the source caused the recommendation.
  8. A mention is counted when a tracked brand appears in an AI response to a qualified observation, regardless of whether the brand is recommended. TAMKO's raw mention presence rate of 31.91% reflects 172 mentions across 539 qualified observations.
  9. A valid recommendation is counted when a brand appears in a recommendation shortlist within an AI response. TAMKO's valid recommendation coverage of 10.58% reflects 57 valid recommendations across 539 qualified observations.
  10. Brand-level percentages use the qualified benchmark set of 539 observations as the public denominator, not the 800 raw prompts. Changes in the qualified set can affect rates even when raw prompt counts are stable.
  11. The September 2026 run returned to the same six surface families observed in July 2026. August 2026 included an additional surface family and a larger qualified set of 610 observations, which affects month-over-month comparability for that period.
  12. Average recommended rank covers rank-eligible recommendations only. TAMKO's average recommended rank of 4.47 is calculated across the recommendations where the brand received rank credit.

See How AI Is Recommending Your Brand

The public benchmark shows where TAMKO stands in AI-generated roofing recommendations. A company-level AI visibility audit maps the specific prompts where TAMKO is mentioned but not recommended, identifies which competitor takes the recommendation slot in those answers, and traces the response back to the evidence sources that shaped it. That prompt-level view is what turns a category standing into a prioritized visibility plan.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
