Answer Capsule

ZenBusiness holds the strongest recommendation placement in the September 2026 Trademark Registration Services benchmark, with a 44.94% top-three rate and a 26.97% rank-one rate, both the highest among tracked brands. Its valid recommendation coverage of 50.56% ranks second behind LegalZoom, which leads on coverage at 65.73% but places lower when recommended. ZenBusiness converts mentions into top positions more efficiently than any competitor, yet it appears in only 66.85% of qualified observations, leaving a meaningful presence gap against LegalZoom's 97.19%. The clearest opportunity is expanding raw presence across high-intent recommendation prompts without diluting its category-leading placement quality.

Executive Summary

ZenBusiness is the strongest recommendation-placement brand in the September 2026 Trademark Registration Services benchmark. It recorded 90 valid recommendations across 178 qualified observations, a valid recommendation coverage of 50.56%, second only to LegalZoom at 65.73%. Where ZenBusiness separates itself is placement: its 44.94% top-three rate and 26.97% rank-one rate are the highest in the category, and its average recommended rank of 1.54 is the strongest of any tracked brand.

The brand's raw mention presence rate of 66.85% is up 1.5 points from July 2026, indicating it is entering more AI-generated answers over time. Positive mentions totaled 95 against 22 neutral and 2 negative, producing a net sentiment score of 0.7815, the second-highest among leading brands. The framing around ZenBusiness is consistently favorable when it appears.

ZenBusiness's strongest cluster is C01, Best Trademark Registration Services, which is also the only cluster with qualified observations in the current public series. Within that cluster, ZenBusiness holds a 44.94% top-three rate and a 1.54 average recommended rank, meaning when it is recommended, it tends to appear at or near the top of the list.

The clearest gap is presence, not placement. LegalZoom appears in 97.19% of qualified observations while ZenBusiness appears in 66.85%, a 30.34-point presence gap. ZenBusiness is recommended more effectively when it surfaces, but it surfaces less often. That gap represents the primary competitive displacement risk in the category.

Platform-level data shows ZenBusiness performing strongly on Copilot, where it holds a 73.33% top-three rate and a 73.33% rank-one rate, and on ChatGPT, where it holds a 76.92% top-three rate. Its Google AI Mode presence rate of 63.64% is the second-highest on that platform behind LegalZoom, but its top-three rate there is 38.18%, suggesting room to convert presence into higher placement on Google surfaces.

The benchmark's public series currently measures only the Brand Recommendation cluster. No qualified observations fell into Pricing and Value or Multi-Brand Comparison, so the data cannot yet show how ZenBusiness performs in direct head-to-head comparisons or pricing-led prompts. That is a measurement gap, not a performance gap.

What ZenBusiness Is Winning

Questions This Section Answers

  • How does ZenBusiness' top-three and rank-one rate compare with LegalZoom and Bizee (Incfile)?
  • Which platforms produce ZenBusiness' strongest trademark registration placement signals?
  • What does ZenBusiness' average recommended rank of 1.54 say about where it appears when recommended?

ZenBusiness holds the highest top-three recommendation rate in the category at 44.94%, ahead of LegalZoom at 26.97% and Bizee (Incfile) at 30.90%. This means that when AI systems recommend trademark registration services, ZenBusiness appears in the first three positions more often than any other brand.

It also holds the highest rank-one rate at 26.97%, meaning it is the first recommendation in more than one in four qualified observations. Its average recommended rank of 1.54 is the best in the category, confirming that when ZenBusiness is recommended, it tends to appear at or near the top of the list.

ZenBusiness recorded the largest upward move from August 2026 to September 2026, gaining 4.4 points in valid recommendation coverage from 46.2% to 50.6%. This reversed a prior month of decline and re-established a clearer hold on second place after August's near tie with Bizee (Incfile).

On Copilot, ZenBusiness holds a 73.33% top-three rate and a 73.33% rank-one rate, with an average recommended rank of 1.00. On ChatGPT, it holds a 76.92% top-three rate and a 30.77% rank-one rate. These are the strongest platform-level placement signals in the dataset.

ZenBusiness recorded only 2 negative mentions across 178 qualified observations, against 95 positive and 22 neutral. Its net sentiment score of 0.7815 is the second-highest among leading brands, behind Bizee (Incfile) at 0.7982.

Where ZenBusiness Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why is raw presence, not placement quality, ZenBusiness' primary gap against LegalZoom?
  • On which platforms does ZenBusiness convert its presence into top-three trademark recommendations most efficiently?

The primary gap is raw presence. ZenBusiness appears in 66.85% of qualified observations, while LegalZoom appears in 97.19%. That 30.34-point difference means LegalZoom enters nearly every AI-generated answer about trademark registration services, while ZenBusiness is absent from roughly one in three. Because ZenBusiness converts mentions into top-three placements at a higher rate than LegalZoom, each additional appearance represents a disproportionate opportunity to capture a top recommendation position.

On Google AI Mode, ZenBusiness holds a 63.64% presence rate but a 38.18% top-three rate. LegalZoom holds a 96.36% presence rate and a 41.82% top-three rate on the same platform. ZenBusiness is present in fewer Google AI Mode answers and converts that presence into top-three placements at a slightly lower rate than LegalZoom. Google AI Mode carries the largest observation volume of any tracked platform at 55 qualified observations, making it the highest-leverage surface for closing the presence gap.

On Google AI Overviews, ZenBusiness holds a 53.19% presence rate and a 42.55% top-three rate, with a 31.91% rank-one rate. LegalZoom holds a 95.74% presence rate and a 38.30% top-three rate on the same platform. ZenBusiness converts its AI Overviews presence into top-three placements more efficiently than LegalZoom, but appears in far fewer AI Overviews answers. The same pattern holds: strong conversion, limited presence.

On Perplexity, ZenBusiness holds a 70.00% presence rate and a 30.00% top-three rate, with a 30.00% rank-one rate and an average recommended rank of 1.00. LegalZoom holds a 100.00% presence rate and a 30.00% top-three rate on the same platform. ZenBusiness matches LegalZoom's top-three rate on Perplexity but appears in 30% fewer answers.

On Gemini, ZenBusiness holds a 75.00% presence rate and a 42.86% top-three rate, with a 21.43% rank-one rate. LegalZoom holds a 96.43% presence rate and a 25.00% top-three rate on the same platform. ZenBusiness outperforms LegalZoom on top-three placement on Gemini but again appears in fewer answers.

The pattern across every platform is consistent: ZenBusiness places well when it appears, but appears less often than LegalZoom. The gap is not recommendation quality. It is recommendation coverage.

Biggest Opportunity

Questions This Section Answers

  • Which prompts and platforms offer ZenBusiness the largest gain from closing its presence gap?
  • Why would expanding presence translate directly into more top-three trademark recommendations for ZenBusiness?

The single biggest opportunity for ZenBusiness is expanding raw presence across high-intent recommendation prompts on Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews, where observation volume is highest and the presence gap against LegalZoom is widest. ZenBusiness already converts mentions into top-three placements at a category-leading rate. Closing even a portion of the 30-point presence gap on Google surfaces would translate directly into additional top-three and rank-one recommendations without requiring any improvement in placement quality.

The prompt evidence points to specific high-intent queries where presence matters most: "trademark registration," "best trademark service," "trademark registration services," and "What is the best online legal document service?" These are the prompts where buyers form shortlists. ZenBusiness already appears in some of these answers with strong placement. The opportunity is to appear in more of them.

Competitive Landscape

Questions This Section Answers

  • How does ZenBusiness lead on top-three rate despite ranking second by valid recommendation coverage?
  • Which trademark registration competitors lost ground on placement since July 2026?

LegalZoom holds the highest valid recommendation coverage in the category at 65.73%, but ZenBusiness holds the strongest placement metrics with a 44.94% top-three rate and a 26.97% rank-one rate. Bizee (Incfile) ranks third by coverage at 47.75% but converts that coverage into top-three placements at a lower rate than ZenBusiness. Rocket Lawyer and Trademark Engine have both declined significantly since July 2026, reshaping the middle and lower tiers of the category.

ZenBusiness leads the category on both top-three rate and rank-one rate despite ranking second by valid recommendation coverage. Its average recommended rank of 1.54 is the strongest in the table, meaning when it is recommended, it appears closer to the top than any competitor. LegalZoom's lower top-three rate of 26.97% and average rank of 2.96 indicate that while LegalZoom appears in more answers, it is placed lower when it does.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Market Discovery Audit Map every high-intent prompt where ZenBusiness is absent but competitors are recommended, with platform-level breakdowns across Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and Perplexity.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Prioritize the prompt clusters and platforms where closing the presence gap would produce the largest gain in top-three and rank-one recommendations, given ZenBusiness's category-leading placement conversion rate.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Strengthen the owned pages and structured content that AI systems retrieve when forming trademark registration recommendations, focusing on the prompts where ZenBusiness currently does not appear.

Phase 4: Citation and Authority Layer Development Develop the public evidence layer, including third-party sources, comparison pages, and authority signals, that AI systems draw on when generating recommendation answers in this category.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track presence rate, valid recommendation coverage, top-three rate, rank-one rate, and sentiment by platform and cluster each month to measure whether the presence gap is closing.

Why This Matters

ZenBusiness is the strongest recommendation-placement brand in the Trademark Registration Services category, but it appears in only two-thirds of the AI-generated answers where buyers are forming shortlists. LegalZoom appears in nearly all of them. In a category where buyers increasingly ask AI systems for a recommendation before they ever visit a website, appearing in more answers is the difference between being on the shortlist and being left off it.

The benchmark shows that ZenBusiness converts mentions into top recommendations more efficiently than any competitor. The next move is not to improve placement quality. It is to expand presence into the prompts and platforms where ZenBusiness is currently absent, so that its category-leading conversion rate has more opportunities to produce top-three and rank-one recommendations.

Sentiment Score

Questions This Section Answers

  • How is ZenBusiness' net sentiment score of 0.7815 calculated from its positive, neutral, and negative mentions?
  • Why are unclassified mention counts misleading when interpreting ZenBusiness' AI visibility?

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions

ZenBusiness recorded 95 positive mentions, 22 neutral mentions, and 2 negative mentions across 119 total mentions. Its sentiment score is 0.7815, meaning the framing around ZenBusiness in AI-generated answers is overwhelmingly positive.

This matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A brand that appears in 119 answers but is described neutrally or as a comparison anchor is not the same as a brand that appears in 119 answers and is actively recommended. Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal. Counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility.

ZenBusiness's 0.7815 sentiment score places it second among leading brands, behind Bizee (Incfile) at 0.7982 and ahead of LegalZoom at 0.6763. The two negative mentions are a small fraction of total mentions and do not materially affect the overall framing.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of AI-generated recommendations in the Trademark Registration Services category for September 2026. It is not a client implementation case study.
  2. The reporting window covers September 2026, with baseline comparisons to July 2026 and August 2026 where available.
  3. Six AI and search platforms were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode.
  4. The September 2026 dataset contains 178 qualified observations, drawn from 800 total prompt-surface observations, 525 unique questions, and 443 relevant prompts.
  5. The competitor universe includes 10 tracked brands: LegalZoom, ZenBusiness, Bizee (Incfile), Rocket Lawyer, Trademark Engine, Trademarkia, Gerben IP, Trademark Factory, Swyft Filings, and Heer Law.
  6. One public high-intent cluster is qualified in the current series: Brand Recommendation (C01), covering discovery and consideration prompts. Pricing and Value (C02) and Multi-Brand Comparison (C03) clusters recorded zero qualified observations.
  7. Stage 0 extraction retains the query, AI or search surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and, where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources.
  8. A mention is counted when a tracked brand appears in a qualified observation, regardless of whether it is recommended.
  9. A valid recommendation is counted when a brand appears in a recommendation position that the dataset explicitly marks as valid. Negative, neutral, cautionary, comparison-anchor, and listed-only mentions are not counted as valid recommendations.
  10. Top-three rate and rank-one rate are calculated against the qualified observation denominator of 178. Average recommended rank covers rank-eligible recommendations only.
  11. The public benchmark does not measure market share, attributable sales, every possible AI response, organic-search ranking, social mention volume, private or sponsored channels, or causality from a metric movement alone.
  12. Small-count brands such as Gerben IP, Swyft Filings, and Trademark Factory operate on 2 to 3 valid recommendations. Their percentage movements reflect single-digit changes and should be read with that context.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
