12 minutes read

Key Takeaways

  • NordVPN appeared in 99.29% of qualified AI responses, but valid recommendation coverage was lower at 76.43%, leaving a 22.86-point mention-to-recommendation gap.
  • Its strongest advantage is placement quality: NordVPN led the category with a 47.71% rank-one rate, a 65.14% top-three rate, and the best average recommended rank of 1.64.
  • AI Mode delivered NordVPN's strongest platform performance, while Gemini was the weakest, with lower recommendation coverage and a higher share of neutral reference mentions.
  • The benchmark did not capture qualified pricing or comparison prompts, so NordVPN's position in cost-driven and head-to-head decision queries remains unmeasured.

Answer Capsule

NordVPN is the most-mentioned VPN brand in the September 2026 LLM Authority Index AI Market Discovery benchmark, with a 99.29% raw mention presence rate across 700 qualified observations. That presence does not convert into equivalent recommendation power: valid recommendation coverage sits at 76.43%, second behind Proton VPN at 80.29%. NordVPN's clearest win is first-position strength, where it holds a 47.71% rank-one rate against Proton VPN's 12.71%. Its clearest weakness is that it is mentioned in nearly every answer but left out of the recommendation set in roughly one in four. The clearest opportunity is closing that mention-to-recommendation gap inside the brand recommendation cluster that carries the entire benchmark.

Executive Summary

NordVPN is the most visible brand in the VPN Services benchmark and the strongest first-position recommender, but it is not the coverage leader. Across 700 qualified observations in September 2026, NordVPN appeared in 695 responses, a 99.29% raw mention presence rate, and was recommended in 535 of them, a 76.43% valid recommendation coverage rate. Proton VPN led the category at 80.29% coverage on a lower presence rate of 96.29%. The gap between the two brands is 3.86 percentage points, and it narrowed from 3.8 points in July 2026 as both leaders eased lower.

The benchmark's central distinction applies directly to NordVPN: being mentioned is not the same as being recommended. NordVPN is present in almost every answer, yet roughly one in four qualified observations mentions the brand without extending a valid recommendation. That is the largest single gap in the brand's September 2026 position, and it is the gap that matters most at the decision moment.

NordVPN's strongest signal is placement quality rather than coverage. Its top-three recommendation rate of 65.14% is the highest in the category, ahead of Surfshark at 54.00% and Proton VPN at 45.00%. Its rank-one rate of 47.71% is more than triple Proton VPN's 12.71%. When AI systems do recommend NordVPN, they tend to recommend it first. Average recommended rank of 1.64 is the best in the benchmark.

The weakest cluster signal is structural rather than brand-specific. All 700 qualified observations in September 2026 fell into the brand recommendation class. The pricing and value class and the multi-brand comparison class recorded zero qualified observations in July, August, and September 2026. The public benchmark therefore cannot yet show how NordVPN performs when buyers ask about cost, plans, or head-to-head alternatives, which are the prompt types closest to a purchase decision.

Platform behavior varies more than the aggregate suggests. NordVPN's strongest platform signal is AI Mode, where it holds a 55.62% rank-one rate and a 75.84% top-three rate across 178 observations. Its weakest relative position is Gemini, where valid recommendation coverage falls to 58.54% and rank-one rate to 29.27%, both well below its category-wide figures. Copilot shows a similar pattern at 74.42% coverage.

Sentiment is positive but not the category's best. NordVPN's net sentiment score of 0.8273 sits below Proton VPN at 0.8902 and Mullvad VPN at 0.9019, with 580 positive mentions, 110 neutral mentions, and 5 negative mentions. The framing is healthy. The recommendation conversion is where the measurable opportunity sits.

What NordVPN Is Winning

Questions This Section Answers

  • What does NordVPN's rank-one rate show about its first-position strength compared with Proton VPN?
  • Which platform produces NordVPN's strongest top-three and rank-one recommendation rates?
  • How does NordVPN's sentiment and negative mention profile look across the tracked platforms?

NordVPN holds the strongest first-position recommendation signal in the VPN Services benchmark. Its 47.71% rank-one rate in September 2026 is the highest of the ten tracked brands and more than triple Proton VPN's 12.71%. The benchmark's own placement analysis notes that similar coverage levels can hide very different first-position rates, and NordVPN is the clearest example of that pattern working in its favor.

Its top-three recommendation rate of 65.14% is also the category's highest, ahead of Surfshark at 54.00% and Proton VPN at 45.00%. Average recommended rank of 1.64 is the best in the benchmark. When AI systems place NordVPN in a recommendation set, they place it near the top.

Presence is effectively universal. At 99.29%, NordVPN appears in nearly every qualified observation, and its presence rate held essentially flat across the July-to-September series. The brand is not at risk of disappearing from AI answers.

AI Mode is NordVPN's strongest platform. Across 178 observations, it recorded a 75.84% top-three rate, a 55.62% rank-one rate, and 83.71% valid recommendation coverage. That is the highest coverage figure NordVPN posts on any tracked platform and the clearest evidence that its recommendation strength is concentrated in Google's AI surfaces.

Negative framing is minimal. Five negative mentions against 580 positive mentions produced a net sentiment score of 0.8273, and the brand recorded no negative mentions at all on Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, or AI Mode.

Where NordVPN Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • Where does NordVPN's mention presence fail to convert into a valid recommendation?
  • Which AI platforms show the largest coverage and rank-one gaps for NordVPN?
  • What does the missing pricing and comparison cluster data mean for NordVPN's competitive position?

The primary gap is recommendation conversion, not visibility. NordVPN is mentioned in 99.29% of qualified observations but recommended in 76.43%. That 22.86-point spread between presence and valid recommendation coverage is the largest absolute gap among the top four brands and represents the single biggest recoverable position in the benchmark.

Proton VPN leads the category on coverage despite lower presence. Proton VPN appears in 96.29% of observations, 3.0 points less often than NordVPN, yet converts that presence into recommendations 3.86 points more often. The benchmark shows the two brands converging across the series, with Proton VPN down 3.6 points and NordVPN down 3.7 points since July 2026. The leadership gap narrowed to 3.86 points in September 2026. NordVPN's advantage in first position is not enough to offset Proton VPN's advantage in breadth of recommendation.

Gemini is the clearest platform-level gap. NordVPN's valid recommendation coverage on Gemini is 58.54%, roughly 18 points below its category-wide figure, and its rank-one rate of 29.27% is less than two-thirds of its overall rate. Gemini also produced the highest neutral visibility rate of any platform for the brand at 30.49%, meaning nearly a third of Gemini mentions place NordVPN in a reference context rather than a recommendation context.

Copilot shows a similar but smaller pattern. Coverage of 74.42% and a rank-one rate of 48.84% sit below the brand's AI Mode and ChatGPT results. The brand's recommendation strength is unevenly distributed across surfaces, and the two platforms where it underperforms are the ones most likely to be used for workplace and research-oriented discovery.

The comparison and pricing clusters are unmeasured rather than weak. The benchmark recorded zero qualified observations in the VPN Comparison & Alternatives cluster and zero in the VPN Pricing, Plans & Cost Evaluation cluster across all three months. NordVPN's position in head-to-head and cost-driven prompts is unknown from this dataset. Given that its coverage advantage over Proton VPN is narrow while its first-position advantage is large, the comparison cluster is where the leadership question is most likely to be decided, and it is currently invisible.

Biggest Opportunity

Questions This Section Answers

  • How can NordVPN close the presence-to-recommendation gap without increasing visibility?
  • Which prompt types and platforms offer the highest-value opportunity to improve recommendation conversion?

The clearest path from reference to recommendation runs through the prompts where NordVPN is mentioned but not shortlisted. Closing even a portion of the 22.86-point presence-to-recommendation gap would move the brand from second to first on the benchmark's primary metric without requiring any increase in presence, which is already near saturation.

The highest-value version of that work sits in the Gemini and Copilot surfaces, where coverage runs 18 and 2 points below the brand's category-wide rate, and in the comparison and pricing prompt types that the public benchmark does not yet measure. Those are the prompts where a buyer has moved past discovery and is choosing between named options.

NordVPN leads the table on top-three rate, rank-one rate, and average recommended rank, and it is the only brand in the category with a rank-one rate above 47%. Proton VPN sits third on top-three rate but first on valid recommendation coverage, which is the benchmark's primary metric. The two brands are winning on different dimensions: NordVPN on placement quality, Proton VPN on breadth of recommendation. Surfshark is the closest challenger on top-three rate at 54.00% but converts very little of that into first position at 5.71%.

Prompt Evidence

Questions This Section Answers

  • How does NordVPN appear across AI Mode, Gemini, ChatGPT, and Copilot for specific VPN prompts?
  • Which platform-specific prompt examples show NordVPN being recommended versus referenced?

AI Mode / Best VPN Discovery & Evaluation Prompt: "Which is the best VPN?" Result: NordVPN is recommended in first position, consistent with its 55.62% rank-one rate on AI Mode.

Gemini / Best VPN Discovery & Evaluation Prompt: "What's the most trusted VPN?" Result: NordVPN appears in the answer but is placed in a reference context rather than a recommendation, consistent with Gemini's 30.49% neutral visibility rate for the brand.

ChatGPT / Best VPN Discovery & Evaluation Prompt: "best vpn 2026" Result: NordVPN is recommended with a top-three placement, part of a 73.75% top-three rate on ChatGPT across 80 observations.

Copilot / Best VPN Discovery & Evaluation Prompt: "What VPN works with Spectrum?" Result: NordVPN is recommended, though Copilot's 74.42% coverage for the brand trails its AI Mode result by more than 9 points.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Market Discovery Audit Map the specific prompts where NordVPN is mentioned but not recommended, and identify which competitor absorbs the recommendation in each case.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Prioritize the Gemini and Copilot gaps and the unmeasured comparison and pricing prompt types, where the brand's position is unknown and the buyer is closest to a decision.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Strengthen the pages and answer assets that AI systems retrieve when forming VPN recommendations, focused on the attributes that convert a mention into a shortlist placement.

Phase 4: Citation and Authority Layer Development Build the public evidence layer that supports retrievability, including the source types AI systems appear to synthesize from when answering VPN prompts.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track valid recommendation coverage, top-three rate, rank-one rate, and sentiment by platform and cluster each month to confirm whether the mention-to-recommendation gap is closing.

Why This Matters

NordVPN is winning the visibility contest and losing part of the recommendation contest. AI systems mention the brand in nearly every VPN answer, but they leave it out of the recommendation set in roughly one in four. For a buyer working through an AI-generated shortlist, a mention without a recommendation is close to invisible.

The next move is not more presence. Presence is already at 99.29%. The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers that determine whether a mentioned brand becomes a recommended one, particularly on the platforms and prompt types where NordVPN's conversion is weakest.

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why do neutral mentions matter for interpreting NordVPN's 99.29% presence rate?
  • How does NordVPN's sentiment score differ from its raw visibility?

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions x 1 + neutral mentions x 0 + negative mentions x -1) / total mentions

For NordVPN in September 2026: (580 x 1 + 110 x 0 + 5 x -1) / 695 = 0.8273.

This matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A brand mentioned 695 times looks identical whether those mentions are enthusiastic recommendations, neutral references, cautionary notes, or comparisons where a competitor wins. NordVPN's 110 neutral mentions are the clearest example: those are responses where the brand appears but is not being recommended, and counting them as wins would overstate the brand's position by roughly 16 points of presence.

Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal in the buyer's decision process. Counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, and it is why NordVPN's 99.29% presence rate and 76.43% recommendation coverage tell different stories.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of NordVPN's position in the September 2026 LLM Authority Index AI Market Discovery Index for VPN Services. It is not a client engagement result.
  2. The reporting window covers September 2026, with July 2026 and August 2026 used as comparison points across the three-month series.
  3. Six AI surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. All six produced at least one qualified observation in each month of the series.
  4. The September 2026 run began with 800 prompt-surface observations and 593 unique questions. After qualification, 700 observations formed the public denominator.
  5. Ten brands were tracked: CyberGhost VPN, ExpressVPN, IPVanish, Mullvad VPN, NordVPN, Private Internet Access, Proton VPN, Surfshark, TunnelBear, and Windscribe.
  6. Three public clusters were defined: Best VPN Discovery & Evaluation, VPN Comparison & Alternatives, and VPN Pricing, Plans & Cost Evaluation. Only the first produced qualified observations in the September 2026 series.
  7. Stage 0 extraction retained the query, AI surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and, where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources.
  8. A mention is any appearance of the brand in a qualified observation, regardless of framing or placement.
  9. A valid recommendation is an observation where the brand appears in a recommendation context. Neutral references, cautionary mentions, and comparison anchors are not counted as valid recommendations unless the dataset marks them as such.
  10. Brand-level percentages use the 700 qualified observations as the public denominator, not the raw collection of 800 prompts.
  11. The benchmark does not measure market share, attributable sales, organic search ranking, social mention volume, or causality from a metric movement alone. Movements indicate correlation, not cause.
  12. Small absolute counts apply to lower-coverage brands in the tracked set. NordVPN's counts are large enough that percentage movements are not dominated by single placements.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
