Key Takeaways

  • Regions Bank remained the clear leader with 41.2% valid recommendation coverage in October 2026, far ahead of United Bank.
  • The category was stable overall, with no brand moving beyond normal month-to-month variation.
  • Placement shifted more than coverage for Regions Bank and Bryant Bank, showing changes in how often each bank was ranked first or in the top three.
  • The benchmark only measured brand recommendation prompts in October 2026, so it could not assess pricing or direct head-to-head comparisons.

Executive Summary

The October 2026 run keeps Regions Bank as the category's coverage leader. Regions Bank holds a 41.2 percent valid recommendation coverage rate for October 2026, up 0.7 points from 40.5 percent in September 2026 and unchanged in rank. The gap to the next brand remains wide: United Bank sits at 6.4 percent coverage for October 2026, so the leader holds a margin of 34.8 points over the second-placed brand.

No brand posted a movement that exceeded normal month-to-month variation. The category summary classifies all seven tracked banks as stable and describes the month as quiet. The strongest upward movers by coverage were United Bank (up 0.8 points to 6.4 percent) and Regions Bank (up 0.7 points to 41.2 percent), both from September 2026 to October 2026. Bryant Bank recorded the sharpest coverage decline over the same span, down 1.4 points to 1.9 percent, though it stayed within its normal variation band.

Placement metrics moved more than coverage for two brands this month, though neither shift is flagged as a significant move by the benchmark's series gate. Regions Bank's rank-one rate rose to 14.1 percent in October 2026 from 8.9 percent in September 2026, a gain of 5.2 points. Bryant Bank's top-three rate fell to 0.6 percent in October 2026 from roughly 3.0 percent in September 2026, a decline of 2.4 points.

Against the prior month, leadership did not change hands, no streak broke, and no instrument break was recorded. The category has now been led by the same brand across both months in the series.

Each monthly run begins with 795 prompt-surface observations (557 unique questions) across the benchmark's defined AI/search surface universe. Of those, 793 mentioned a tracked brand or competitor; 603 were relevant and 190 were irrelevant. The public metrics use the 311 observations that survive both qualification stages. >In September 2026, the run began with 798 prompt-surface observations (572 unique questions); 793 mentioned a tracked brand or competitor, 609 were relevant and 184 were irrelevant, with 304 observations surviving qualification.

AI Response Inconsistency Alerts

Questions This Section Answers

  • Which AI platforms disagreed on basic facts about Regions Bank?
  • What conflicting claims surfaced about Century Bank's merger status?

The October 2026 conflict review detected 11 critical or high-severity factual inconsistencies across six AI platforms: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity. Two companies, Century Bank and Regions Bank, were affected.

Century Bank

Two critical inconsistencies were detected, both involving the bank's merger status. When asked whether Century Bank is merged, Perplexity stated that Century Bank has been merged into Eastern Bank, completed in November 2021, while Copilot stated that Century Bank has not yet fully merged and is in the process of being acquired by Bank7 Corp., expected to close in Q3 2026. Both responses describe the same entity but give mutually exclusive statuses. The Copilot response cited the Journal Record, an FT markets announcement, and Investing.com coverage of the Bank7 acquisition. A second critical inconsistency saw Gemini state that Massachusetts-based Century Bank merged into Eastern Bank on November 12, 2021, again conflicting with the Copilot claim of a pending Bank7 Corp. acquisition. Gemini's response cited a Wikipedia entry for Century Bank, an Eastern Bankshares merger-completion announcement, and a US Bank Locations listing. The Eastern Bankshares investor page and the Wikipedia entry were both flagged as supporting sources, each at full confidence.

Regions Bank

Nine high-severity inconsistencies were detected across five platforms: ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity.

On top-25 inclusion, ChatGPT stated that Regions Financial Corporation is ranked 25th with roughly $160 to $170 billion in assets, while Copilot stated that Regions Bank is outside the top 25 and lists it among ranks 26 to 50. Both responses cited a US Bank Locations ranking page, which was flagged as supporting the Copilot position.

On LifeGreen Business Checking fee-waiver criteria, Google AI Overviews stated the $12 monthly fee is waived with a $2,500 average balance, Merchant Services use, or $1,000 or more in Regions Business Visa spending, while Google AI Mode stated the fee is waived with a $500 average monthly balance, $1,000 in monthly card purchases, or Merchant Services use. A Wise business-account review page was flagged as supporting the higher-threshold position.

On the $200 offer, Perplexity stated it is a checking-account sign-up bonus requiring roughly $500 in deposits within 60 days, while Google AI Mode stated it is tied to the Cash Rewards Visa Credit Card and requires $1,000 in qualifying purchases within 90 days. A second conflict on the same topic saw Perplexity describe a LifeGreen checking sign-up bonus while Google AI Overviews attributed the $200 offer to the Cash Rewards Visa Signature or Prestige Visa Signature credit card with the same $1,000-in-90-days requirement. A Hustler Money Blog page and a Doctor of Credit page were flagged as supporting the credit-card interpretation.

On Q2 2026 net income, three separate conflicts were detected. Google AI Overviews reported net income of $570 million with adjusted net income of $583 million, while Google AI Mode reported net income of $549 million with diluted earnings per share of $0.64, or $0.68 adjusted. Perplexity's response gave adjusted earnings per share of about $0.68 and revenue of about $1.95 billion without a net income figure, differing from both. Each conflict involved the same underlying quarterly result.

On CD promotional rates and terms, Google AI Overviews listed 5-month, 8-month, 13-month, and 19-month promotional terms with standard and relationship APYs ranging from 2.75 percent to 3.80 percent, while Google AI Mode listed 6-month, 7-month, 11-month, and 17-month promotional terms with relationship APYs ranging from 3.25 percent to 4.00 percent. Neither set of terms overlapped.

On immediate check deposit availability, ChatGPT stated that Regions offers an immediate-access option for eligible mobile deposits for a fee, while Copilot stated that holds are common and last one to two business days. A Finder page and a KeyBank mobile-deposit page were flagged as supporting the immediate-access framing, while Copilot's response cited branch location pages for Frost Bank, Regions Bank, and Woodforest National Bank.

No brand exceeded normal month-to-month variation in October 2026. All coverage movements remained within each brand's normal variation band, and the category-level position came from a combination of small, stable movements rather than a single decisive shift.

What Changed This Month

Questions This Section Answers

  • How did Regions Bank's visibility compare to its recommendation placement?
  • Why did Bryant Bank's top-three placements fall this month?
  • What drove United Bank's coverage gain despite lower presence?

Regions Bank

Regions Bank's valid recommendation coverage moved to 41.2 percent in October 2026 from 40.5 percent in September 2026, a gain of 0.7 points that stays well inside its normal variation range.

Placement moved more than coverage. The rank-one rate rose to 14.1 percent in October 2026 from 8.9 percent in September 2026, a gain of 5.2 points. The top-three rate rose 2.2 points to 31.8 percent over the same span. Raw mention presence slipped 0.5 points to 80.1 percent, so the brand is being referenced slightly less often while being placed higher when it is recommended.

The distinction to notice is visible versus recommended. Regions Bank appears in 80.1 percent of qualified observations but converts that presence into a top-three recommendation in 31.8 percent. The rank-one gain indicates that when a shortlist forms, the brand is increasingly the first name, not merely present.

Highest-priority diagnostic: which prompt classes and which surfaces are driving the rank-one gain, and whether the shift is concentrated in one surface family or spread evenly.

United Bank

United Bank posted the largest coverage gain of the month, moving to 6.4 percent in October 2026 from 5.6 percent in September 2026, up 0.8 points and within its normal variation band. That is 20 valid recommendations in October 2026, up from 17 in September 2026.

Placement held broadly steady. The top-three rate was flat at 2.6 percent, while the rank-one rate rose 0.6 points to 1.6 percent, representing 5 rank-one placements in October 2026 versus 3 in September 2026. Raw mention presence slipped 0.6 points to 10.3 percent.

The distinction here is that United Bank's coverage gain did not come from more visibility. Presence fell slightly while coverage rose, meaning the observations where the brand appeared converted to recommendations at a higher rate. With counts this small, single placements move the percentage more than they would at higher volume.

Highest-priority diagnostic: whether the added recommendations cluster in a specific buyer-intent context or come from a single surface family.

Bryant Bank

Bryant Bank recorded the sharpest coverage decline of the month, falling to 1.9 percent in October 2026 from 3.3 percent in September 2026, down 1.4 points and still within its normal variation band. That is 6 valid recommendations in October 2026, down from 10 in September 2026.

Placement fell more sharply than coverage. The top-three rate dropped 2.4 points to 0.6 percent, representing 2 top-three placements in October 2026 versus 9 in September 2026. The rank-one rate was flat at 0.0 percent in both months. Raw mention presence fell 1.4 points to 2.2 percent.

The distinction to note is that Bryant Bank's losses appear at both stages: fewer appearances and fewer top-three placements among the appearances that remained. Its sentiment held steady at 0.9 in both months, so the decline is a placement and presence story rather than a sentiment story. At 6 valid recommendations, individual placements carry outsized weight in the percentage.

Highest-priority diagnostic: whether the lost top-three placements sit in one prompt class or across several, and which brand took those placements.

Hancock Whitney, River Bank & Trust, and the Flat Brands

Hancock Whitney's coverage rose 0.3 points to 1.3 percent in October 2026 from 1.0 percent in September 2026, with raw mention presence up 2.8 points to 9.7 percent while the top-three rate slipped 0.4 points to 0.6 percent. River Bank & Trust moved up 0.3 points to 0.6 percent coverage, holding presence flat at 1.0 percent, with 2 valid recommendations in October 2026 versus 1 in September 2026. 22nd State Bank recorded no coverage, no placement, and no presence in either month. Century Bank recorded no coverage or placement in either month; its presence rate fell from 0.3 percent in September 2026 to 0.0 percent in October 2026.

Highest-priority diagnostic: for the two brands with zero measurable coverage, whether any qualified observation mentions them at all across the full surface set.

Buyer-Intent Interpretation

Questions This Section Answers

  • Which buyer-intent clusters are represented in the October 2026 data?
  • What can't the benchmark answer about pricing or head-to-head comparisons?

Buyer-intent cluster

What it captures

Strategic question

Brand Recommendation

Prompts asking which bank to choose or which banks are best

Which brand does AI name first when a buyer asks for a recommendation?

Pricing & Value

Prompts asking about fees, rates, and account value

Which brand does AI associate with competitive pricing?

Multi-Brand Comparison

Prompts asking how two or more banks compare

Which brand wins when AI is asked to compare options directly?

In October 2026, the qualified observations fell entirely into the Brand Recommendation class. Every tracked brand's coverage, top-three, and rank-one figures come from discovery and consideration prompts. The Pricing & Value and Multi-Brand Comparison classes recorded no qualified observations in October 2026, so the public benchmark cannot yet answer which brand AI associates with competitive pricing or which brand wins a direct head-to-head comparison. Buyers asking those questions are receiving answers that this benchmark does not currently measure.

Evidence Behind the Benchmark

The aggregate metrics are built from prompt-level observations, each carrying the query, the AI surface, the recommendation outcome, the placement position, sentiment, and citations where the surface exposes them. Company-level analysis can go deeper into which prompts a brand wins, which competitor takes the recommendation when it loses, what attributes AI associates with each option, and which external sources shape those answers. Source presence is not automatically treated as proof of causation.

About This Benchmark

Report-Specific Interpretation Notes

  • Coverage percentages are calculated on a small qualified base. A single placement moves the percentage more for brands with few recommendations than for the leader, so month-to-month movement at low counts should be read alongside the absolute counts.
  • Brand-level rates use the qualified denominator of 311 observations for October 2026, not the 795 raw prompt-surface observations collected. The two are not interchangeable.
  • Movement between two months identifies a change worth investigating. It does not by itself establish what caused that change.
  • The Pricing & Value and Multi-Brand Comparison buyer-intent classes recorded no qualified observations in October 2026, so the public benchmark does not currently carry a per-cluster rate for price, value, or head-to-head comparison prompts.

Next Step

The Public Benchmark Shows Where a Brand Is Winning or Losing. A Company-Level Audit Shows Why.

Beneath each aggregate percentage sit questions the benchmark is not built to answer on its own. Which high-intent prompts does a brand win, and which does it lose? When a brand is absent from a shortlist, which competitor takes the recommendation instead? What attributes do AI systems associate with each option, and which external sources shape the answers they give? The conflict review in this report shows that platforms can disagree on basic facts, so the evidence behind a recommendation matters as much as the recommendation itself.

A company-specific AI visibility audit maps those prompt, surface, competitor, ranking, sentiment, and evidence-source patterns into a prioritized visibility strategy. It works at the level of individual queries and individual sources, which is where the aggregate percentages are actually decided.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
