Identity Theft Protection in AI Search: The Biggest AI Visibility Problems and How We'd Fix Them

Mark HuntleyBy Mark HuntleyFounder and CEO

Key Takeaways

  • Aura and LifeLock dominate mentions, recommendations, and top placements across the benchmark.
  • Several mid-tier brands are named often but recommended less often, showing a gap between reach and endorsement.
  • Pricing and coverage claims vary across AI answers, so disputed facts need primary-source verification before any correction request.
  • The recommended next steps are a baseline scorecard, fact-checking disputed claims, and page briefs for owned and third-party sources.

Companies covered: IDX, Aura, IDShield, LifeLock, IdentityIQ, PrivacyGuard, IdentityForce, Identity Guard, Zander Insurance, Allstate Identity Protection

Answer Capsule

The November 2026 Identity Theft Protection benchmark compares 10 companies across 400 AI answers that met its inclusion rules. Aura recorded 400 mentions and 353 recommendations (88.25% of the answers). Being mentioned means appearing in an answer; being recommended means receiving an affirmative endorsement.

We examine each company, compare the available monthly results, and set out a five-step plan for improving the information AI systems can draw on. The work starts with measuring visibility and checking conflicting claims, then moves to company pages, relevant publishers and buyer questions. The cited pages need review before any correction request, and the research does not establish what caused recommendation differences or promise future gains.

The peer set splits into a clear top tier and a long tail. Aura and LifeLock are named in nearly every answer and recommended in most of them, so they occupy the default position a buyer meets first. Identity Guard and IdentityForce form a credible second tier, named in roughly half the answers and recommended in slightly fewer.

The gap that matters is between being named and being endorsed. IDShield, IdentityIQ, PrivacyGuard, Zander Insurance and Allstate Identity Protection are all mentioned far more often than they are recommended, and almost none reach the top three. For those brands, the practical question is not whether AI systems know them but whether answers give a reason to choose them.

First-place placement is concentrated even more sharply. Aura and LifeLock take the overwhelming share of top slots, while most other brands record few or none. Because first-place counts sit inside shortlist counts, which sit inside recommendations, the pattern is about position within an answer, not extra visibility.

For the agency, this argues for work that separates reach from endorsement. A scorecard showing where each brand is named, recommended and placed gives the client a defensible starting point, and fact-checking the disputed claims protects whichever brands the client owns.

The monthly figures are separate samples, so month-to-month movement should be read as observed change rather than like-for-like performance. Aura and LifeLock both show higher recommendation rates in the latest month than in the prior one, and several mid-tier brands also moved up.

IdentityForce is the exception worth noting: its mention count rose while its recommendation rate eased slightly. That is a reminder that more appearances do not automatically mean more endorsements. The comparability limit applies across the board, since each month drew on a different set of answers.

What the history supports is a baseline, not a trend claim. Recording the current snapshot with its sample size and coverage lets future months be compared on documented terms, and any later movement can then be described honestly rather than attributed to a cause the data cannot show.

IDX is named rarely, and its few appearances are mostly recommendations, which suggests the brand is endorsed when it surfaces rather than dismissed. It does not reach the top three, so its challenge is presence and position rather than persuasiveness.

The recorded pricing conflict is the practical starting point. We would verify current published pricing against primary sources before treating either version as correct, and only then decide whether any correction is warranted.

Aura is the most visible brand in the set and is recommended in most answers, with a large share of top placements. That position is an asset to protect rather than a gap to close.

The volume of conflicting claims, including high-priority pricing conflicts, is the real exposure. We would fact-check each disputed claim against current primary sources and prepare a page brief for the owned page, treating corrections as conditional on what verification shows.

IDShield is named in a substantial share of answers and recommended in most of those, but it rarely reaches the top three. The brand is credible when it appears; the gap is position within answers.

We would review the owned page and the selected third-party source against the recorded pricing conflicts, verify current figures first, and use the findings to brief content that gives answers a clearer reason to place IDShield higher.

LifeLock sits alongside Aura at the top of the set, named in nearly every answer and recommended in most, with a strong share of top placements. Its visibility is not in question.

The conflicting insurance coverage claims are the priority. We would verify the current coverage figures against primary sources, then prepare a page brief and a source-review package so any correction rests on confirmed facts rather than on one AI answer contradicting another.

IdentityIQ appears in a modest share of answers and is recommended in most of those, but it almost never reaches the top three. The brand is accepted when mentioned; it is rarely the answer's leading choice.

The single recorded conflict is a low-priority location detail. We would confirm it against primary sources as part of routine fact-checking, and focus the larger effort on buyer-question content that gives answers a reason to place IdentityIQ higher.

PrivacyGuard is named in a small share of answers and recommended in most of them, with only occasional top-three placement. The pattern is limited reach rather than weak endorsement.

No conflicting claims were recorded, so the fact-checking burden is light. We would concentrate on buyer-question briefs drawn from the observed questions and review the owned page for clarity, measuring again afterward without promising a gain.

Selected owned-page review candidate: https://zanderins.com/identity-theft-protection.

Selected third-party review candidate: https://ramseysolutions.com/insurance/what-is-the-best-identity-theft-protection.

Zander Insurance is named in a small share of answers but recommended in most of them, and it records a few first-place placements. When it appears, it tends to be endorsed.

No conflicting claims were recorded, so the work is about reach. We would review the owned page and the Ramsey Solutions source, confirm current facts, and build buyer-question content around the questions where Zander already surfaces, without assuming demand from those observations.

Selected owned-page review candidate: https://allstateidentityprotection.com/plans/consumer.

Selected third-party review candidate: https://security.org/identity-theft/best/.

Allstate Identity Protection is named in a small share of answers and recommended in most of those, with occasional top-three placement. The brand is endorsed when it appears but rarely enters the leading conversation.

No conflicting claims were recorded. We would review the owned plans page and the selected third-party source for accuracy and clarity, then brief buyer-question content aimed at the questions where the brand already appears, treating any later movement as a separate observation.

The CiteWorks five-step improvement plan

Step 1. Establish the baseline

Questions This Section Answers

  • What should the agency deliver when it works to establish the baseline for Identity Theft Protection?

We would build a cohort scorecard that records each brand's mentions, recommendations and placements exactly as measured, with the sample size and coverage noted beside them. Every entry gets an owner and a review status so the baseline is traceable.

The scorecard also documents how future months will be compared, including the fact that samples differ. That protects later reporting from being read as like-for-like performance when it is not.

Step 2. Verify disputed facts

Questions This Section Answers

  • What should the agency deliver when it works to verify disputed facts for Identity Theft Protection?

AI answers contained 85 conflicting claims across 7 companies. Another 0 possible conflicts were excluded because their company matches were uncertain. The conflicting claims need fact-checking before any corrections are proposed.

The disputed claims come first because page and source work depends on them. We would resolve each company match, check the date and entity involved, and verify against current primary sources before deciding whether a correction is warranted.

Ambiguous matches stay outside the correction queue. Each claim gets a recorded outcome: confirmed, no change needed, or a justified correction request, with the evidence noted beside it.

Step 3. Review owned pages

Questions This Section Answers

  • What should the agency deliver when it works to review owned pages for Identity Theft Protection?

With facts settled, we would assign page briefs to the supplied owned URLs. Each brief states what the page should make clear, which verified facts it should carry, and what evidence supports any change.

Briefs are proposals, not edits. Nothing is changed until current page contents have been checked directly, since the report does not establish what those pages currently say.

Step 4. Review third-party sources

Questions This Section Answers

  • What should the agency deliver when it works to review third-party sources for Identity Theft Protection?

For third-party sources, we would prepare evidence-backed review packages tied to the supplied publisher pages. Each package sets out the verified fact, the supporting source and the specific request, if any.

A citation does not show that a source influenced an answer, so requests are framed around accuracy rather than assumed influence. Responses and no-change decisions are recorded separately.

Step 5. Address buyer questions and measure again

Questions This Section Answers

  • What should the agency deliver when it works to address buyer questions and measure again for Identity Theft Protection?

The observed questions give us a starting point for buyer-question content briefs. We would write briefs that answer those questions plainly, using verified facts, and hand them to the client's content owners.

Measurement comes later and separately. Delivered work is tracked on its own, and any change in answer outcomes is reported as an observation with its comparability limits, not as proof that the work caused it.

These pages are candidates for review, not confirmed errors. Citation appearances are counted across the captured answers and are not added again for each company.

The publisher list should be prioritized by how often each page appears across captured answers and by how many of the client's brands it covers. The security.org and cnet.com pages reach the widest set of brands, which makes them efficient places to start a review.

Citation frequency is not evidence of influence, and none of these pages is a confirmed error. Before any request, we would check each page's current contents and verify the relevant facts against primary sources, then decide whether a review request is justified at all.

What we'd prioritize first

Period

Deliverable

Completion criterion

Days 1–30

Baseline scorecard, scoped fact-review register and page/source shortlist

Each record has an owner, evidence requirement and review status

Days 31–60

Approved page briefs and justified publisher requests

Separate confirmed edits, no-change decisions, requests and responses

Days 61–90

Buyer-content briefs and a fresh scorecard

Record work completed separately from measured answer outcomes and comparability limits

The first priority is the baseline scorecard, because every later decision depends on a traceable record of what was measured and how. Alongside it, we would open the fact-review register and shortlist the pages and sources worth examining.

The second priority is the high-priority conflicts, particularly the pricing and coverage claims attached to the leading brands, since those carry the most risk if left unresolved. Page briefs and publisher requests follow only once facts are verified.

The third priority is buyer-question content and a fresh scorecard. Work completed is recorded separately from answer outcomes, and no gain is promised.

Methodology and conclusion

Questions This Section Answers

  • What do the Identity Theft Protection sample and source-review limits allow us to conclude?

This report covers 2026-11. The exact dates when the original AI answers were collected have not been verified. The visibility rates use 400 answers that met the benchmark's inclusion rules. A company is recommended only when the answer both endorses it and uses positive wording. Top 3 and first-place counts are part of those recommendations, not extra recommendations.

An answer can mention or recommend several companies, so company counts cannot be added to find the number of distinct answers. The net sentiment score is positive minus negative mentions, divided by all company mentions; it describes answer wording, not customer satisfaction.

The wider citation analysis covers 800 captured answers and 5633 appearances of cited URLs. Citation appearances across all captured answers differ from the number of benchmark answers citing a page and the number that also recommend a company. The current contents of cited pages and disputed company claims still need independent verification.

The answer samples differ between months. These comparisons show how the recorded results changed; they do not establish why they changed.

The figures describe how often brands were named, endorsed and placed across the included answers, not customer satisfaction or market share. Because an answer can cover several companies, counts cannot be added to find distinct answers, and the monthly samples differ.

The proposed work follows from those observations: a documented baseline, verified facts before any correction, page and source reviews tied to supplied URLs, and buyer-question content. Each step is conditional on primary-source verification, and later measurement is reported as observed change rather than proven effect.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
