McAfee AI Market Strategy Report - Antivirus Software

McAfee AI Market Strategy Report - Antivirus Software

Answer Capsule

McAfee holds meaningful presence in AI-generated antivirus recommendations but is losing ground as a recommended choice, with valid recommendation coverage of 35.35% in September 2026, down 9.4 points from 44.8% in July 2026. The brand appears in 56.28% of qualified observations, yet converts only a fraction of that presence into top-three placements at 6.51% and rank-one recommendations at 0.31%. McAfee also carries the weakest net sentiment score among tracked brands at 0.6364, indicating more cautious or mixed framing when the brand is mentioned. The clearest opportunity lies in rebuilding the evidence layer that supports positive recommendation contexts, particularly on platforms where McAfee is present but rarely chosen first.

Executive Summary

McAfee's AI recommendation presence is eroding across a two-month period. The benchmark shows valid recommendation coverage fell from 44.8% in July 2026 to 35.4% in September 2026, a 9.4-point decline that the LLM Authority Index marks as significant against baseline. Raw mention presence also dropped from 62.5% to 56.3%, meaning the brand is being surfaced less often overall, not just ranked lower when it appears.

The sentiment picture compounds the visibility problem. McAfee recorded 253 positive mentions, 88 neutral mentions, and 22 negative mentions across 645 qualified observations. Its net sentiment score of 0.6364 is the lowest among all ten tracked brands, and the negative visibility rate of 3.41% is the highest in the category. The pattern combines reduced visibility with more cautious or mixed framing when McAfee is mentioned.

McAfee's strongest cluster is Best Antivirus Software Discovery & Evaluation, which accounts for all 645 qualified observations in the current public series. Within that cluster, the brand appears in 56.28% of observations but is recommended in a valid context only 35.35% of the time. The gap between presence and recommendation conversion is substantial.

The clearest platform weakness is Gemini, where McAfee holds a 41.18% presence rate but a 0.00% top-three rate and a 0.00% rank-one rate. The brand is mentioned on Gemini but almost never recommended in a prominent position. Google AI Overviews shows a similar pattern, with a 52.84% presence rate converting to only a 6.82% top-three rate.

The strongest platform signal for McAfee is Copilot, where the brand reaches a 54.02% valid recommendation coverage rate, the highest among the six tracked platforms. This suggests certain surface families still frame McAfee as a viable option, even as aggregate recommendation coverage declines.

What McAfee Is Winning

Questions This Section Answers

  • Where does McAfee achieve its strongest evidence-backed AI recommendation coverage?
  • Which platforms still surface McAfee as a viable option in at least half of qualified observations?

McAfee's clearest evidence-backed win is its Copilot performance. On Copilot, McAfee achieves a 54.02% valid recommendation coverage rate, a 6.90% top-three rate, and a 78.16% raw mention presence rate. This is the only platform where McAfee converts more than half of its presence into valid recommendations.

McAfee also maintains meaningful presence across most platforms. The brand appears in at least half of qualified observations on ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity. Only Gemini falls below this threshold at 41.18%.

The brand shows a narrow but real recommendation pocket on ChatGPT, where it reaches a 46.77% valid recommendation coverage rate and a 9.68% top-three rate. This indicates some prompt patterns still surface McAfee as a recommended option, even if the brand rarely wins the top position.

Where McAfee Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • How large is the gap between McAfee's presence and its conversion into top-three recommendations?
  • Which platforms show the clearest pattern of mentioning McAfee without recommending it?
  • What does McAfee's net sentiment score of 0.6364 indicate about how the brand is framed?

McAfee's most significant gap is the conversion of presence into recommendation. The brand appears in 56.28% of qualified observations but achieves only a 6.51% top-three rate and a 0.31% rank-one rate. Competitors with similar or lower presence convert far more effectively. Norton, with a 78.6% presence rate, reaches a 45.43% top-three rate. Malwarebytes, with a 72.09% presence rate, reaches a 20.93% top-three rate. Even Avast, at a 73.18% presence rate, reaches a 14.11% top-three rate.

Gemini is the clearest platform gap. McAfee holds a 41.18% presence rate on Gemini but records zero top-three recommendations and zero rank-one recommendations across 68 observations. The brand is being mentioned without being recommended, a pattern that suggests AI systems on Gemini frame McAfee as context rather than as a choice.

Google AI Overviews shows a similar displacement pattern. McAfee appears in 52.84% of observations on this surface but reaches only a 6.82% top-three rate and a 0.00% rank-one rate. Norton and Bitdefender GravityZone both achieve top-three rates above 38% on the same surface, indicating McAfee is losing prominent placement to competitors.

The sentiment gap compounds these visibility issues. McAfee's net sentiment score of 0.6364 is the lowest in the category, and its negative visibility rate of 3.41% is the highest. No other tracked brand exceeds a 2.79% negative visibility rate. This suggests the public evidence layer contains more cautionary or mixed framing about McAfee than about any competitor.

Biggest Opportunity

Questions This Section Answers

  • Where does McAfee lose the most addressable recommendation visibility despite strong presence?
  • What would closing the gap between presence and recommendation on Google AI Overviews require?

McAfee's clearest opportunity is converting its substantial presence on Google AI Overviews into valid recommendations. The brand appears in 52.84% of Google AI Overviews observations but achieves only a 30.68% valid recommendation coverage rate and a 6.82% top-three rate. On the same surface, Bitdefender GravityZone reaches a 60.23% valid recommendation coverage rate and a 51.70% top-three rate, while Malwarebytes reaches a 65.34% coverage rate and a 26.14% top-three rate.

The gap between presence and recommendation on Google AI Overviews represents the single largest addressable visibility loss for McAfee. The brand is already part of the answer set on this surface; the issue is that AI systems mention McAfee without recommending it prominently. Closing this gap requires strengthening the evidence sources that support positive recommendation contexts, particularly those that frame McAfee as a recommended choice rather than a passing reference.

Competitive Landscape

Questions This Section Answers

  • Which competitors hold the strongest recommendation-stage positions in the antivirus category?
  • Where does McAfee rank on top-three rate relative to its presence rate?

Norton, Malwarebytes, and Bitdefender GravityZone hold the strongest recommendation-stage positions in the antivirus category, with Norton leading on top-three rate and Bitdefender GravityZone leading on rank-one placement. McAfee sits in the lower tier, with presence that exceeds its recommendation conversion and sentiment that trails every tracked competitor.

McAfee ranks eighth on top-three rate despite holding the sixth-highest presence rate in the category. The table shows that McAfee's recommendation conversion is closer to the lower-tier brands than to the leaders, while its sentiment score is the weakest in the tracked set.

Prompt Evidence

ChatGPT / Best Antivirus Software Discovery & Evaluation Prompt: "What is the most reputable antivirus software?" Result: McAfee appeared in the response but was not placed in a top-three recommendation position, reflecting a pattern where the brand is mentioned as context rather than chosen.

Gemini / Best Antivirus Software Discovery & Evaluation Prompt: "Which antivirus software is best?" Result: McAfee was present in 41.18% of Gemini observations but received zero top-three recommendations, indicating the platform surfaces the brand without recommending it.

Google AI Overviews / Best Antivirus Software Discovery & Evaluation Prompt: "What is the #1 antivirus?" Result: McAfee appeared in over half of observations on this surface but achieved only a 6.82% top-three rate, while competitors captured the prominent recommendation positions.

Copilot / Best Antivirus Software Discovery & Evaluation Prompt: "Is there any free antivirus software?" Result: McAfee reached a 54.02% valid recommendation coverage rate on Copilot, the strongest platform signal for the brand in the current series.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Market Discovery Audit Map which high-intent prompts surface McAfee without recommending it, and identify the specific competitor that captures the recommendation when McAfee loses.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Prioritize the platforms where presence is highest but recommendation conversion is weakest, starting with Google AI Overviews and Gemini.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Develop owned content that directly answers the discovery and evaluation prompts where McAfee is currently mentioned but not recommended.

Phase 4: Citation / Authority Layer Development Strengthen the public evidence sources that support positive framing of McAfee, addressing the negative visibility rate that is the highest in the category.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track whether the gap between presence and recommendation narrows on Google AI Overviews and whether sentiment improves across all six platforms.

Why This Matters

AI systems are increasingly the first stop for buyers deciding which antivirus software to choose. When McAfee appears in over half of AI answers but is recommended in a valid context only a third of the time, the brand is losing the decision moment to competitors who convert presence into recommendation more effectively.

Presence alone is not enough. The benchmark shows that McAfee is visible but under-recommended, and the sentiment data suggests the public evidence layer carries more mixed framing than any competitor faces. The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers to convert mentions into recommendations and to rebuild the positive framing that supports selection.

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why does raw mention count misrepresent McAfee's AI visibility?
  • Why is classified sentiment required before interpreting AI visibility?

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions

For McAfee, this calculation is (253 × 1 + 88 × 0 + 22 × -1) / 363, producing a net sentiment score of 0.6364.

This score matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. McAfee appears in 363 observations, but those mentions are not equal. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention carry different commercial weight. Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. Counting all mentions as wins would hide the fact that McAfee has the highest negative visibility rate in the category. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, because the framing of a mention determines whether it helps or hurts the brand at the decision moment.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of McAfee's AI recommendation visibility in the Antivirus Software category, derived from the LLM Authority Index AI Market Discovery Index and CiteWorks Studio interpretation of that public data. It is not a client implementation case study.
  2. The reporting window is September 2026, with trend comparisons drawn against July 2026 and August 2026 baselines where available.
  3. Six canonical AI/search surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overviews.
  4. The benchmark began with 800 prompt-surface observations in September 2026, of which 615 were unique questions and 800 mentioned a tracked brand or competitor.
  5. Of the 800 observations, 788 were relevant and 12 were irrelevant. The public metrics in this report are calculated across the 645 qualified observations that survived both qualification stages.
  6. The competitor universe includes 10 tracked brands: Avast, AVG, Bitdefender GravityZone, ESET, Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, McAfee, Norton, Trend Micro, and Webroot.
  7. All 645 qualified observations in September 2026 fell into the Best Antivirus Software Discovery & Evaluation cluster. The public series does not yet contain qualified observations in pricing and value or multi-brand comparison classes.
  8. Stage 0 extraction captured prompt-level observations including the query, AI surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and citations where exposed.
  9. A mention is defined as any qualified observation where the brand appears in the AI response, regardless of recommendation context.
  10. A valid recommendation is defined as a qualified observation where the brand appears in a recommendation context, not merely as a passing reference or comparison anchor.
  11. Brand-level percentages use the 645 qualified observations as the public denominator, not the 800 raw prompt total.
  12. Limitations: Movement between months identifies changes worth investigating but does not by itself establish cause. Source presence is evidence about the information environment, not proof that a source caused a recommendation. Small-count brands show movement from low bases, and absolute counts should be read alongside percentages. The public benchmark measures which brand AI names as the answer, but not why it wins on cost or feature comparisons.
