Executive Summary

M1 Finance is visible in the IRAs category but is not converting that visibility into recommendation-stage strength. The benchmark recorded 57 mentions across 534 qualified observations, a raw mention presence rate of 10.67%, but only 44 valid recommendations, a valid recommendation coverage of 8.24%. The gap between presence and recommendation is narrow in absolute terms because both figures are low, which places M1 Finance at the bottom of the tracked set on both dimensions.

The brand's top-three recommendation rate is 0.75%, meaning it appears in a top-three position in fewer than one in one hundred qualified observations. Its rank-one rate is 0.00%, the only tracked brand with no first-position recommendations in October 2026. The average recommended rank of 4.88 reflects that when M1 Finance does receive rank credit, it typically lands in the middle of the list rather than at the top.

The strongest cluster for M1 Finance is the brand recommendation cluster, which is also the only cluster with qualified observations in October 2026. Within that cluster, the brand's top-three rate is 0.75% and its rank-one rate is 0.00%. The comparison and pricing clusters produced no qualified observations this month, so the benchmark cannot yet speak to how M1 Finance performs when buyers ask about alternatives or costs.

The strongest platform signal for M1 Finance is Perplexity, where it achieved a valid recommendation coverage of 15.3% and a top-three rate of 1.2%. The weakest platform signal is ChatGPT, where the brand recorded zero mentions and zero recommendations across 62 observations. Copilot and Google AI Overviews also show limited recommendation conversion, with top-three rates of 0.0% and 0.0% respectively.

The clearest gap is the absence of rank-one recommendations. Every other tracked brand, including Merrill Edge and Wealthfront Corporation, recorded at least one first-position recommendation. M1 Finance did not. This suggests that when AI systems do include M1 Finance in a shortlist, they consistently place it behind other options rather than presenting it as the default or leading choice.

The benchmark classifies M1 Finance's cumulative decline from 14.6% to 8.24% as significant against the July 2026 baseline. The movement rests on 44 valid recommendation observations, so it carries more uncertainty than the higher-coverage brands, but the direction is consistent with the brand's low presence and recommendation rates across the full measurement period.

What M1 Finance Is Winning

Questions This Section Answers

  • Where does M1 Finance show positive sentiment in AI-generated IRA answers?
  • Which platforms are driving M1 Finance's IRA recommendations?

M1 Finance's clearest win is its net sentiment score of 0.7719, which reflects positive framing among the mentions it does receive. The brand recorded 44 positive mentions, 13 neutral mentions, and zero negative mentions in October 2026. Only Betterment LLC and Wealthfront Corporation also recorded zero negative mentions, and both of those brands posted higher sentiment scores.

The brand's second win is its Perplexity performance. M1 Finance achieved a valid recommendation coverage of 15.3% on Perplexity, which is higher than its overall coverage of 8.24%. Its top-three rate on Perplexity was 1.2%, and its average recommended rank was 4.46. This suggests that Perplexity is the platform where M1 Finance is most likely to be surfaced and recommended, even though the absolute numbers remain low.

The brand's third win is its continuing presence in the brand recommendation cluster. M1 Finance appeared in 57 qualified observations, which keeps it inside the category conversation alongside higher-volume brands such as Merrill Edge and Wealthfront Corporation. The brand is not absent from the category conversation, even though it is not converting that presence into recommendation strength.

These wins are narrow. M1 Finance does not lead on any metric, does not appear in a top-three position at a meaningful rate, and does not have a rank-one recommendation. The evidence suggests the brand has a small but positive footprint in AI-generated IRA recommendations, not a competitive position.

Where M1 Finance Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why does M1 Finance's mention rate not convert into IRA recommendations?
  • What does M1 Finance's zero rank-one rate mean compared to competitors?
  • Which platforms show no top-three placement for M1 Finance despite receiving mentions?

The clearest gap for M1 Finance is recommendation conversion. The brand is mentioned in 10.67% of qualified observations but receives a valid recommendation in only 8.24%. That 2.5 percentage point gap between presence and recommendation is smaller than the gaps for higher-coverage brands, but it reflects a different problem: M1 Finance is not being mentioned often enough to generate meaningful recommendation volume, and when it is mentioned, it is not being recommended at a rate that would move it up the standings.

The second gap is rank-one placement. M1 Finance recorded zero rank-one recommendations in October 2026. By comparison, Fidelity recorded 302 rank-one recommendations, Charles Schwab recorded 125, Robinhood recorded 17, Vanguard recorded 11, SoFi recorded 3, Betterment LLC recorded 2, E*TRADE recorded 2, Merrill Edge recorded 1, and Wealthfront Corporation recorded 1. M1 Finance is the only tracked brand with no first-position recommendations. This means that when AI systems generate a recommendation list, M1 Finance is never the first option presented.

The third gap is platform coverage. M1 Finance recorded zero mentions on ChatGPT across 62 observations. On Copilot, the brand recorded 10 mentions and 9 valid recommendations, but its top-three rate was 0.0%. On Google AI Overviews, the brand recorded 16 mentions and 10 valid recommendations, with a top-three rate of 0.0%. On Google AI Mode, the brand recorded 11 mentions and 8 valid recommendations, with a top-three rate of 0.75%. The brand's recommendation activity is concentrated on Perplexity and Gemini, with limited or no top-three placement on the other platforms.

The fourth gap is competitive displacement. Fidelity holds a top-three rate of 83.33% and a rank-one rate of 56.55%. Charles Schwab holds a top-three rate of 78.84% and a rank-one rate of 23.41%. Robinhood holds a top-three rate of 24.53% and a rank-one rate of 3.18%. Vanguard holds a top-three rate of 37.64% and a rank-one rate of 2.06%. M1 Finance's top-three rate of 0.75% places it below every other tracked brand except Merrill Edge, which has a top-three rate of 0.75% as well. The benchmark evidence suggests that M1 Finance is not competing for the recommendation slots that the leading brands are capturing.

Biggest Opportunity

Questions This Section Answers

  • How much would M1 Finance's top-three rate need to rise to match other IRA platforms?
  • Is M1 Finance's best path to shortlist placement through Perplexity or Gemini?

The biggest opportunity for M1 Finance is to convert its existing presence into top-three recommendation placement within the brand recommendation cluster. The brand already appears in 57 qualified observations and receives positive framing in 44 of them. The gap is not visibility; it is recommendation conversion. If M1 Finance could move its top-three rate from 0.75% to even 5.0%, it would appear in a top-three position in approximately 27 qualified observations instead of 4, which would place it closer to E*TRADE's 6.55% top-three rate and SoFi's 7.68% top-three rate.

This opportunity is specific to the brand recommendation cluster, which is the only cluster with qualified observations in October 2026. The benchmark does not yet contain qualified observations in the comparison or pricing clusters, so the opportunity to win head-to-head or cost-focused prompts cannot be measured this month. Within the brand recommendation cluster, the path from reference to recommendation requires M1 Finance to be presented not just as an option but as a leading option.

The evidence suggests that the brand's strongest platform for this conversion is Perplexity, where it already achieves a 15.3% valid recommendation coverage and a 1.2% top-three rate. Improving top-three placement on Perplexity would be the most direct path to increasing the brand's overall top-three rate. The second platform opportunity is Gemini, where M1 Finance recorded an 8.9% valid recommendation coverage and a 4.4% top-three rate. The third platform opportunity is Google AI Mode, where the brand recorded a 6.7% valid recommendation coverage and a 0.75% top-three rate.

Competitive Landscape

Questions This Section Answers

  • How does M1 Finance compare to Fidelity, Charles Schwab, and other IRA platforms on top-three and rank-one rates?
  • Where does M1 Finance's average recommended rank and sentiment score sit relative to the tracked IRA platforms?

Fidelity and Charles Schwab hold dominant recommendation-stage strength in the IRAs category, with top-three rates of 83.33% and 78.84% respectively. M1 Finance sits at the bottom of the tracked set, with a top-three rate of 0.75% and a rank-one rate of 0.00%.

Why This Matters

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why is being mentioned in AI answers not enough for appearing in an IRA buyer's shortlist?
  • What prompt, page, or citation changes could close M1 Finance's recommendation gap?

AI presence alone is not enough. M1 Finance is mentioned in 10.67% of qualified observations, but it receives a valid recommendation in only 8.24% and a top-three recommendation in only 0.75%. The brand is visible but not recommended at the decision moment. In a category where Fidelity and Charles Schwab are capturing more than 80% of top-three recommendations, the gap between being mentioned and being chosen is the gap that determines whether a brand appears in a buyer's shortlist.

The next move for M1 Finance is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers. The benchmark evidence suggests that the brand's presence is concentrated on Perplexity and Gemini, and that its recommendation conversion is limited by the absence of top-three placement. Correcting that requires understanding which prompts produce recommendations, which sources AI systems cite when generating those recommendations, and which attributes AI systems associate with M1 Finance compared to the brands that are being recommended ahead of it.

Sentiment Score

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions

For M1 Finance, the calculation is (44 × 1 + 13 × 0 + 0 × -1) / 57 = 44 / 57 = 0.7719.

This score matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A brand with 57 mentions could appear to have a strong presence, but if those mentions are neutral references or cautionary comparisons, they do not represent recommendation strength. M1 Finance's sentiment score of 0.7719 reflects that the brand receives predominantly positive framing when it is mentioned, with no negative mentions in October 2026. Sentiment is not the same as recommendation. A positive mention is not a top-three recommendation, and a neutral reference is not a rank-one placement. The benchmark separates these signals because they represent different stages of the buyer journey.

Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. Counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, and M1 Finance's sentiment score should be read alongside its recommendation coverage and top-three rate, not in isolation.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of M1 Finance's AI visibility and recommendation performance in the IRAs category for October 2026. It is not a client result and does not imply that CiteWorks Studio caused any benchmark outcome.
  2. The reporting window is October 2026. The benchmark began with 800 prompt-surface observations and produced 534 qualified observations after qualification.
  3. Six AI platforms were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode. All six platforms had at least one qualified observation in October 2026.
  4. The benchmark analyzed 534 qualified observations. The raw collection universe was 800 prompt-surface observations, with 619 unique questions after de-duplication. Of the 800 prompts, 592 were relevant and 208 were irrelevant. The qualified denominator of 534 reflects the public benchmark set after all qualification stages.
  5. The competitor universe includes 10 tracked brands: Betterment LLC, Charles Schwab, E*TRADE, Fidelity, M1 Finance, Merrill Edge, Robinhood, SoFi, Vanguard, and Wealthfront Corporation.
  6. Three public high-intent clusters were defined: Brand Recommendation (C01), Budgeting App Comparisons & Alternatives (C02), and Budgeting App Pricing, Fees & Cost Evaluation (C03). Only C01 produced qualified observations in October 2026. C02 and C03 had no qualified observations this month. The cluster labels for C02 and C03 retain budgeting-app taxonomy from an earlier configuration and do not fully match the IRA framing used in this report, so cluster-level conclusions outside C01 should be treated as provisional.
  7. Stage 0 extraction provided the prompt-level observations that retain the query, AI/search surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources.
  8. A mention is defined as any appearance of M1 Finance in a qualified observation, regardless of whether the brand is recommended. A valid recommendation is defined as an appearance in a valid recommendation shortlist, as marked by the dataset. Neutral, cautionary, comparison-anchor, and listed-only mentions are not counted as valid recommendations unless the dataset explicitly marks them as such.
  9. Ranking interpretation: Top-three rate is the share of qualified observations where the brand is recommended within the top three positions. Rank-one rate is the share of qualified observations where the brand is the first recommendation. Average recommended rank is the average position when the brand receives valid rank credit.
  10. The benchmark does not measure market share, sales attribution, organic-search ranking performance, social media mention volume, or private or sponsored channels where AI responses are not publicly observable. Causality from a metric movement alone is not established.
  11. M1 Finance's figures rest on 44 valid recommendation observations, which is a smaller base than the higher-coverage brands. The movement carries more uncertainty than the leaders' figures.
  12. The entity label for M1 Finance was consistent across the measurement period. No entity label split affected this brand's data.
