Executive Summary

Moodle enters October 2026 as the most visible brand in the Learning Management Systems category and one of the least efficient at converting that visibility into recommendation credit. The benchmark recorded 441 mentions across 529 qualified observations, an 83.36% raw mention presence rate that leads every tracked brand, including Docebo at 78.45% and Canvas (Instructure) at 77.13%. That presence translated into 188 valid recommendations, a 35.54% valid recommendation coverage rate that places Moodle third in the category, 8.51 points behind Docebo and 7.56 points behind TalentLMS.

The gap between presence and recommendation is the defining feature of Moodle's position. Moodle appears in more AI answers than any competitor, but its top-three recommendation rate sits at 15.69%, roughly half of Docebo's 31.38% and well behind TalentLMS at 26.28%. Its rank-one rate of 4.73% is less than a third of TalentLMS's 14.37%. In practical terms, AI systems bring Moodle into the conversation frequently and then place it outside the first recommendation slot in most of those answers.

Sentiment is a genuine strength. Moodle recorded 250 positive mentions, 190 neutral mentions, and a single negative mention, producing a net sentiment score of 0.5646. That is a healthy framing profile, though it trails the category's sentiment leaders: 360Learning at 0.8663, Absorb LMS at 0.8063, and TalentLMS at 0.7056. Moodle's framing is positive but not distinctive, which matters because positive framing without placement does not produce shortlist inclusion.

Platform behavior splits sharply. Google AI Overviews is Moodle's strongest surface, with a 51.41% valid recommendation coverage rate and a 0.8413 sentiment score across 142 observations. Perplexity is its strongest relative performer, with a 35.82% coverage rate and a 0.4643 sentiment score. ChatGPT is the clearest weakness: Moodle holds a 96.67% raw mention presence rate on ChatGPT, the highest single-platform presence reading in the dataset, but converts that into valid recommendations at only 25.00%, with a top-three rate of 15.00% and a sentiment score of 0.3448.

The benchmark's month-over-month movement adds context. Moodle rose 5.9 points from September 2026 to October 2026, from 29.6% to 35.5% valid recommendation coverage, a significant prior-month increase. Against the July 2026 baseline of 39.8%, however, the brand is down 4.3 points, which the benchmark classifies as within normal variation. The October gain restored part of a baseline gap rather than establishing new ground.

The category itself is moving toward recommendation-shaped answers. The recommendation-shaped answer share rose from 34.5% in July 2026 to 40.5% in October 2026, and the valid recommendation shortlist share rose from 48.0% to 50.3%. AI systems are increasingly answering learning platform questions with named recommendations rather than neutral descriptions. For a brand whose strength is being described rather than being chosen, that shift raises the cost of the current conversion gap.

What Moodle Is Winning

Questions This Section Answers

  • Where does Moodle hold the strongest AI visibility advantage over competitors like Docebo and Canvas?
  • Which platforms and metrics show Moodle converting AI mentions into actual recommendations?

Moodle holds the strongest raw visibility position in the category. Its 83.36% raw mention presence rate leads all ten tracked brands, ahead of Docebo at 78.45%, Canvas (Instructure) at 77.13%, and TalentLMS at 74.48%. Across 529 qualified observations, Moodle was mentioned 441 times. No competitor matches that reach.

Moodle also holds the highest single-platform presence reading in the dataset. On ChatGPT, Moodle appears in 96.67% of the 60 observations attributed to that platform, meaning AI systems surface the brand in nearly every ChatGPT answer in the qualified set. That is a durable visibility asset and a foundation other brands in the category do not have.

Sentiment framing is positive and stable. With 250 positive mentions against a single negative mention, Moodle's 0.5646 net sentiment score reflects a framing profile with essentially no reputational drag. The brand is not being described cautiously or negatively in AI answers.

Google AI Overviews is a genuine recommendation pocket. Moodle converts 51.41% of its Google AI Overviews observations into valid recommendations, with a 0.8413 sentiment score and a 13.38% top-three rate across 142 observations. That platform represents the strongest combination of volume and conversion in Moodle's profile.

The brand also recorded a significant prior-month improvement, rising 5.9 points from 29.6% in September 2026 to 35.5% in October 2026. That is the joint-largest prior-month gain in the category alongside Docebo.

Where Moodle Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why does Moodle convert so few of its AI mentions into top-three recommendations?
  • On which AI platforms does Moodle appear most often but get recommended least, and who benefits when it loses placement?

The central gap is recommendation conversion. Moodle is mentioned in 83.36% of qualified observations but receives valid recommendation credit in only 35.54%. That 47.82-point spread between presence and recommendation is the widest among the category's top four brands. Docebo's spread is 34.40 points, TalentLMS's is 31.38 points, and Canvas (Instructure)'s is 47.07 points, though Canvas holds a lower presence base.

Top-three placement is where the gap becomes commercially visible. Moodle's 15.69% top-three rate sits 15.69 points behind Docebo and 10.59 points behind TalentLMS. In the observations where Moodle is mentioned but not placed in the first three positions, AI systems are naming other brands as the recommendation. The benchmark's own diagnostic framing identifies this as the highest-priority question for the brand: what AI systems say about Moodle in the observations where it appears but is not placed.

Rank-one placement is weaker still. Moodle holds a 4.73% rank-one rate, or 25 answers out of 529, against TalentLMS's 14.37% and Docebo's 11.72%. When a buyer asks an AI system for a single best learning management system, Moodle is the named answer in fewer than one in twenty qualified observations.

ChatGPT is the clearest platform-level gap. Moodle's 96.67% presence on ChatGPT is the highest in the dataset, but its 25.00% valid recommendation coverage on that platform trails its own Google AI Overviews performance by 26.41 points. The brand is omnipresent on ChatGPT and under-recommended there. Its ChatGPT sentiment score of 0.3448 is also its lowest across all six platforms, suggesting the framing in those answers is more neutral than positive.

Gemini shows a similar pattern at lower volume. Moodle holds a 77.92% raw mention presence rate on Gemini but converts to valid recommendations at only 20.78%, with a 7.79% top-three rate and a 1.30% rank-one rate. Across 77 Gemini observations, Moodle received 16 valid recommendations.

The competitive displacement picture is consistent. In the category's single qualified cluster, Best LMS Discovery and Evaluation, the benchmark identifies Canvas (Instructure) as the cluster winner by captured value, with Moodle second. Docebo holds the highest top-three rate in the category at 31.38% and the highest valid recommendation coverage at 44.05%. Where Moodle loses placement, those two brands are the most frequent beneficiaries.

Biggest Opportunity

Questions This Section Answers

  • How could improving ChatGPT recommendation conversion affect Moodle's shortlist position in buyer consideration?
  • Which buyer prompt cluster offers the clearest path to closing Moodle's visibility-to-recommendation gap?

Moodle's clearest path runs through ChatGPT recommendation conversion. The brand already appears in 96.67% of ChatGPT observations in the qualified set, which means the retrieval and mention layer is effectively solved on that platform. The gap is entirely in how those answers position Moodle relative to alternatives. Moving ChatGPT valid recommendation coverage from 25.00% toward the brand's own Google AI Overviews rate of 51.41% would add recommendation credit without requiring any new visibility.

That opportunity is specific and measurable. It sits in the Best LMS Discovery and Evaluation cluster, where buyers ask direct questions such as which learning management system is best, what LMS corporations use, and what the top platforms are. These are consideration-stage prompts where a mention without a top-three placement produces no shortlist benefit. The work required is not additional presence but stronger recommendation framing in the sources AI systems draw on when they answer those questions.

Competitive Landscape

Questions This Section Answers

  • How do Docebo and TalentLMS outperform Moodle on recommendation placement despite having less AI visibility?
  • What do the top-three, rank-one, and average rank metrics reveal about Moodle's position relative to its closest competitors?

Docebo and TalentLMS hold the strongest recommendation-stage positions in the Learning Management Systems category in October 2026, with Docebo leading on valid recommendation coverage and top-three placement and TalentLMS leading on rank-one placement. Moodle sits third on coverage and third on top-three rate, holding the category's highest presence base but converting it at a lower rate than either leader.

Moodle's row shows a brand with real recommendation credit that is consistently placed later than the category leaders. Its 15.69% top-three rate ties Canvas (Instructure) but its 4.73% rank-one rate trails Canvas's 8.13%, and its average recommended rank of 3.73 is more than a full position behind Docebo's 2.51. The sentiment column shows Moodle's framing is stronger than Canvas, Cornerstone OnDemand, Blackboard (Anthology), and D2L Brightspace, but weaker than the three brands that convert presence into placement most effectively.

Prompt Evidence

ChatGPT / Best LMS Discovery and Evaluation Prompt: "What LMS do corporations use?" Result: Moodle is mentioned in nearly every ChatGPT observation in the qualified set, but converts to a valid recommendation in only 25.00% of them, with a 15.00% top-three rate.

Google AI Overviews / Best LMS Discovery and Evaluation Prompt: "What is the best training software?" Result: Moodle converts 51.41% of Google AI Overviews observations into valid recommendations, its strongest platform performance, with a 0.8413 sentiment score.

Gemini / Best LMS Discovery and Evaluation Prompt: "What are the top 5 LMS platforms?" Result: Moodle appears in 77.92% of Gemini observations but holds only a 7.79% top-three rate and a 1.30% rank-one rate on that platform.

Perplexity / Best LMS Discovery and Evaluation Prompt: "What are eLearning platforms?" Result: Moodle records its highest rank-one rate across platforms at 10.45% on Perplexity, with a 25.37% top-three rate and a 35.82% valid recommendation coverage rate.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Market Discovery Audit Map every qualified prompt where Moodle is mentioned but not placed in the top three, and identify which brands take the recommendation in those answers.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Prioritize ChatGPT and Gemini, where Moodle's presence is high and its recommendation conversion is lowest, and define the framing changes needed in those answers.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Strengthen Moodle's own pages and documentation so the attributes AI systems associate with the brand match the attributes buyers use when asking for a top recommendation.

Phase 4: Citation and Authority Layer Development Build the third-party evidence layer, including review platforms, comparison pages, and category content sites, that AI systems draw on when forming recommendation shortlists.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track valid recommendation coverage, top-three rate, and rank-one rate by platform each month to confirm whether presence is converting into placement.

Why This Matters

AI systems are increasingly answering learning platform questions with named recommendations rather than neutral descriptions. The benchmark's recommendation-shaped answer share rose from 34.5% in July 2026 to 40.5% in October 2026, and the valid recommendation shortlist share rose from 48.0% to 50.3% over the same period. Buyers who ask an AI assistant which learning management system to evaluate are receiving a shortlist, not a landscape overview.

Moodle's position in that shift is unusual. The brand is more visible than any competitor and is framed positively in almost every answer, yet it is placed in the first three recommendations less than half as often as Docebo. Presence without placement does not produce shortlist inclusion, and shortlist inclusion is what determines whether a buyer ever evaluates the platform. The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers that shape how AI systems position Moodle when they answer high-intent buying questions.

Sentiment Score

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions

For Moodle in October 2026: (250 × 1 + 190 × 0 + 1 × -1) / 441 = 249 / 441 = 0.5646.

This score matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A brand mentioned 441 times sounds dominant until the mentions are separated into positive recommendations, neutral references, and cautionary framing. Moodle's 190 neutral mentions represent nearly 43% of its total, meaning a large share of AI answers bring the brand into the response without endorsing it. Those neutral references are not recommendation credit.

Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal in commercial terms, and counting all mentions as wins produces bad measurement. Moodle's 0.5646 score reflects a framing profile that is positive on balance but carries substantial neutral weight, which is consistent with a brand that is frequently described and less frequently chosen. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, and for Moodle the classification shows a visibility leader with a recommendation conversion problem rather than a reputation problem.

Methodology

  1. This report is benchmark-based analysis of Moodle's position in the Learning Management Systems category, produced from the LLM Authority Index AI Market Discovery benchmark for October 2026. It is not a client implementation result.
  2. The reporting window is October 2026, with month-over-month comparisons against September 2026 and baseline comparisons against July 2026.
  3. Six AI platforms were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode. All six qualified with at least one observation in the October set.
  4. The October run began with 800 prompt-surface observations across 527 unique questions. Of those, 800 mentioned a tracked brand or competitor, 620 were relevant to the category, 180 were irrelevant, and 529 qualified for the public benchmark.
  5. The competitor universe contains ten tracked brands: Moodle, Docebo, TalentLMS, Absorb LMS, Canvas (Instructure), 360Learning, Cornerstone OnDemand, SAP Litmos, Blackboard (Anthology), and D2L Brightspace.
  6. One buyer-intent cluster qualified in October: Best LMS Discovery and Evaluation, a consideration-stage cluster covering direct brand recommendation prompts. The pricing and value cluster and the multi-brand comparison cluster contained no qualified observations.
  7. Stage 0 extraction produced the prompt-level observations that retain query, AI surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and citations where exposed. Brand-level percentages are calculated within the 529 qualified observations, not the 800 total prompts collected.
  8. A mention is counted when a tracked brand appears in a qualified AI response, regardless of recommendation status. Raw mention presence rate is the share of qualified observations where the brand is mentioned.
  9. A valid recommendation is counted when a brand appears in a valid recommendation shortlist within a qualified observation. Negative, neutral, cautionary, comparison-anchor, and listed-only mentions are not counted as valid recommendations.
  10. Top-three rate is the share of qualified observations where the brand appears in the first three recommendation positions. Rank-one rate is the share where the brand is the first recommendation. Average recommended rank covers rank-eligible recommendations only.
  11. Net sentiment is positive mentions minus negative mentions, divided by total mentions, ranging from -1 to 1. It measures framing quality in AI answers, not customer sentiment.
  12. Small counts apply at the lower end of the category. Moodle's 188 valid recommendations provide a stable base, but platform-level readings on Copilot, Perplexity, and Gemini rest on smaller observation counts and are more sensitive to response-mix changes. Movement between months identifies changes worth investigating and does not by itself establish causation.

See How AI Is Recommending Your Brand

The public benchmark shows where Moodle stands in AI-generated recommendations across the Learning Management Systems category. A company-level AI visibility audit maps the specific prompts where Moodle is mentioned but not placed, which competitors take the recommendation in those answers, and which sources shape how AI systems position the brand.
