Key Takeaways

  • Mailchimp appears in 49.4% of AI responses in the category, but only 22.1% of those mentions convert into valid recommendations.
  • Its net sentiment score of 0.57 trails major competitors, with 304 neutral mentions showing broad recognition without strong endorsement.
  • Performance is strongest in Discovery and on ChatGPT, but weaker in Pricing Evaluation and especially on Gemini.
  • The main opportunity is to improve public evidence, comparison content, and citation consistency so neutral mentions turn into ranked recommendations.

Answer Capsule

Mailchimp appears in nearly half of all AI-generated responses about email marketing services but converts only 22.1% of those appearances into valid recommendations. The benchmark shows a significant gap between brand recognition and shortlist preference, with a net sentiment score of 0.57 that trails every major competitor. Mailchimp's clearest win is strong mention presence across all platforms, but its clearest weakness is the failure to convert visibility into recommendation power, particularly in comparison and pricing evaluation prompts where purchase decisions form. The clearest opportunity is improving the quality and structure of public evidence to shift from neutral listing to positive, ranked endorsement.

Executive Summary

Mailchimp holds one of the strongest brand recognition positions in the email marketing category, appearing in 49.4% of all AI responses across six platforms. That presence does not translate into recommendation power at the same rate as its top competitors. The benchmark shows Mailchimp converting only 22.1% of its mentions into valid recommendations, with a Top 3 rate of 16.1% and a net sentiment score of 0.57 that is the lowest among the top five tracked platforms.

The gap between visibility and recommendation is Mailchimp's defining competitive risk. ActiveCampaign, Klaviyo, and Brevo all achieve higher recommendation coverage with lower or comparable mention presence, indicating that their public evidence layers produce stronger recommendation signals. Mailchimp's 304 neutral mentions out of 750 total appearances (40.5%) suggest it is frequently listed as a known option without the positive framing that drives shortlist inclusion.

Mailchimp's strongest cluster is Discovery, where it achieves a 17.3% Top 3 rate and a rank-one rate of 8.7%. Its weakest cluster is Pricing Evaluation, where its net sentiment score drops to 0.51 and its recommendation coverage falls to 19.0%. The strongest platform signal comes from Google AI Overviews, where Mailchimp captures $772,360 in modeled AI Authority Value. The clearest platform gap is on Gemini, where its Top 3 rate is just 7.2% and its net sentiment score is 0.43.

Mailchimp captures $1.1 million in monthly modeled AI Authority Value, with $863,333 attributed to recommendation value and $252,686 to visibility assist. The visibility assist portion represents 22.6% of total value, a higher proportion than any other top-tier platform in the category, reinforcing the pattern of presence without preference. These figures are modeled benchmark estimates and are not revenue.

What Mailchimp Is Winning

Mailchimp's strongest performance is in raw mention presence. It appears in 49.4% of all AI responses, placing it fourth behind ActiveCampaign (58.3%), Brevo (53.2%), and Klaviyo (52.9%). This level of visibility confirms that AI systems consistently recognize Mailchimp as a relevant player in the email marketing service category.

On ChatGPT, Mailchimp achieves a 26.9% Top 3 rate and a 15.2% rank-one rate, the highest rank-one rate across all platforms for the brand. This indicates that ChatGPT's retrieval and synthesis process gives Mailchimp stronger recommendation positioning than the other five AI systems in the dataset.

In the Discovery cluster, Mailchimp achieves a 17.3% Top 3 rate and an 8.7% rank-one rate, indicating that awareness-stage buyers are more likely to see Mailchimp recommended than buyers in later-stage prompts. The brand also captures $132,226 in modeled monthly AI Authority Value in this cluster, its strongest cluster-level performance.

Mailchimp's average recommended rank of 2.44 is competitive. When the brand does receive valid recommendation credit, it tends to appear within the top three positions, not at the foot of ranked responses.

Where Mailchimp Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

The most significant gap is the distance between mention presence and recommendation conversion. Mailchimp appears in 49.4% of AI responses but converts only 22.1% into valid recommendations. ActiveCampaign appears in 58.3% of responses and converts 31.6%. Klaviyo appears in 52.9% and converts 30.4%. Mailchimp's recommendation-per-mention conversion rate trails both competitors substantially.

Net sentiment is a structural weakness across the dataset. Mailchimp's score of 0.57 is the lowest among the top five platforms. ActiveCampaign scores 0.68, Klaviyo scores 0.69, Brevo scores 0.72, and HubSpot scores 0.61. The 304 neutral mentions in Mailchimp's total mean that AI systems frequently list the brand without positive framing. The 9 negative mentions, while small in absolute number, represent the highest count among all tracked companies.

On Gemini, Mailchimp's performance is notably weak. Its Top 3 rate is 7.2%, its rank-one rate is 3.2%, and its net sentiment score is 0.43. This is the lowest platform-level sentiment score for any top-tier brand in the category. Mailchimp captures $28,718 in modeled AI Authority Value on Gemini, compared to $761,651 for Brevo and $89,160 for Klaviyo on the same platform.

In the Pricing Evaluation cluster, Mailchimp's recommendation coverage drops to 19.0% and its net sentiment score falls to 0.51. This is the cluster where purchase decisions form, and underperformance here means the brand is losing consideration at the most commercially critical moment.

Brevo is the strongest competitor displacing Mailchimp in the Comparison cluster, capturing $1.2 million in modeled AI Authority Value compared to Mailchimp's $812,604. ActiveCampaign leads in both the Discovery and Pricing Evaluation clusters, consistently ranking ahead of Mailchimp in recommendation positioning across those prompt types.

Biggest Opportunity

Mailchimp's biggest opportunity is converting its high neutral mention count into positive, ranked recommendations by strengthening the public evidence layer that AI systems use to build shortlists. The brand is widely recognized but not consistently endorsed. The path forward requires shifting from being listed as a known option to being recommended as a preferred solution, particularly in comparison and pricing evaluation prompts where buyer decisions take shape. Structural improvement to the owned content layer, third-party citation footprint, and entity consistency across public sources would directly address the gap the benchmark identifies.

Prompt Evidence

ChatGPT / Discovery Prompt: "What are the best email marketing platforms for small businesses?" Result: Mailchimp appeared in the response but was not ranked in the top three, with ActiveCampaign and Klaviyo receiving higher positioning.

Gemini / Comparison Prompt: "Compare Mailchimp vs ActiveCampaign for ecommerce email marketing" Result: ActiveCampaign received the primary recommendation slot, with Mailchimp listed as a secondary option with neutral framing.

Google AI Overviews / Pricing Evaluation Prompt: "Which email marketing service offers the best value for money?" Result: Mailchimp appeared in the response but was not recommended in the top three, with Brevo and ActiveCampaign receiving stronger endorsement.

Copilot / Discovery Prompt: "Recommend an email marketing platform for a growing online store" Result: Klaviyo received the top recommendation, with Mailchimp mentioned as an alternative without specific endorsement.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Market Discovery Audit Map every prompt, platform, and competitor response where Mailchimp appears to identify the exact queries where recommendation conversion fails, with particular focus on Gemini and Perplexity gaps.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Identify the specific public evidence gaps preventing AI systems from ranking Mailchimp higher, including missing comparison content, weak review signals, and inconsistent entity information across sources.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Develop structured, retrievable content that gives AI systems clear, positive source material for Mailchimp's capabilities, pricing, and use-case fit in the clusters where neutral framing currently dominates.

Phase 4: Citation / Authority Layer Development Build the third-party citation architecture, including comparison articles, review signals, and community presence, that AI systems use to validate and rank recommendations at the shortlist stage.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Monitor Mailchimp's recommendation coverage, Top 3 rate, net sentiment, and platform-level performance on a rolling monthly basis to measure directional improvement and surface new displacement risks.

Why This Matters

Mailchimp is one of the most recognized names in email marketing, but AI systems are not translating that recognition into shortlist preference. When a buyer asks an AI system for the best platform, Mailchimp is often listed but not chosen. In an AI-led discovery market, being seen is not enough. The brands that win are the ones AI systems recommend, not just mention.

The gap between Mailchimp's visibility and its recommendation power is a leading indicator of declining shortlist eligibility. Without targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers, Mailchimp risks being displaced by competitors that have built stronger public evidence footprints, particularly in the high-intent comparison and pricing evaluation clusters where buyer shortlists are formed.

Sentiment Score

Sentiment Score = (437 positive x 1 + 304 neutral x 0 + 9 negative x -1) / 750 total mentions = 0.57

This score reflects a predominantly positive but heavily neutral-weighted mention profile. Unclassified mention counts are misleading because they treat a neutral listing and a positive recommendation as equivalent signals. Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, neutral reference, cautionary mention, and competitor-displaced mention are not equal contributions to shortlist eligibility. Counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility as a commercial signal.

Methodology

  1. This report is based on the LLM Authority Index benchmark for the Email Marketing Service category, June 2026 edition. It is a benchmark-based analysis, not a client implementation case study.
  2. The reporting window is June 2026, snapshot-based. AI outputs vary over time and across sessions, and this report reflects conditions at the point of data collection.
  3. Six AI platforms were tracked: ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overviews.
  4. A total of 1,519 observations were analyzed across three public high-intent clusters: Discovery (awareness), Comparison (consideration), and Pricing Evaluation (decision). The full LLM Authority Index report covers 10 clusters.
  5. The competitor universe includes 10 companies: Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, AWeber, Brevo, Campaign Monitor, Constant Contact, GetResponse, HubSpot, Kit (ConvertKit), and Klaviyo. This is not a full market census.
  6. The three public clusters used in this report are: Best Email Marketing Software Discovery (C01), Email Marketing Platform Comparisons (C02), and Email Marketing Software Pricing Evaluation (C03).
  7. Stage 0 refers to the raw extraction of AI responses before classification, sentiment scoring, and ranking analysis. Stage 0 data is used to establish the base observation set from which all metrics are derived.
  8. A mention is recorded when the company appeared in an AI-generated response, regardless of sentiment, rank, or framing.
  9. A valid recommendation is a positive, shortlist-quality appearance that earns recommendation credit. Neutral references, cautionary mentions, and competitor-displaced appearances do not qualify as valid recommendations. Visibility is not the same as recommendation credit.
  10. Modeled AI Authority Value figures are benchmark estimates produced by the LLM Authority Index methodology. They are not revenue, pipeline value, or booked demand.
  11. Limitations: This is a point-in-time benchmark. AI outputs change. This report covers three of ten available clusters and is not a full audit or full market census. Prompt-level response tables, citation-source failure maps, and platform-by-platform recovery priorities are available in the full LLM Authority Index report and are not included in this public version.
