Key Takeaways

  • GoDaddy had the highest mention presence in Hosted Exchange at 81.41%, but only 7.69% valid recommendation coverage.
  • Most of GoDaddy's AI visibility was neutral rather than persuasive, with 210 of 254 mentions classified as neutral.
  • Perplexity showed GoDaddy's strongest recommendation performance, while Copilot produced zero valid recommendations and negative sentiment.
  • The main gap is conversion, not reach: GoDaddy is widely surfaced in AI answers but rarely placed on buyer shortlists.

Answer Capsule

GoDaddy is the most-mentioned brand in the September 2026 Hosted Exchange benchmark and the least recommended among the top three. The LLM Authority Index recorded GoDaddy at 81.41% raw mention presence but only 7.69% valid recommendation coverage, a gap of 73.72 points between being named and being chosen. The brand holds 3.21% top-three placement and 0.96% rank-one placement, with a net sentiment score of 0.0866. GoDaddy is visible everywhere in AI answers and recommended almost nowhere.

Executive Summary

GoDaddy enters September 2026 with the widest raw mention footprint in the Hosted Exchange benchmark and one of the weakest recommendation conversion profiles among the tracked set. The benchmark recorded 254 mentions across 312 qualified observations, an 81.41% presence rate, the highest of any tracked brand. Only 24 of those observations produced a valid recommendation, a 7.69% coverage rate that places GoDaddy third in the category behind Google Workspace at 37.82% and IONOS at 16.67%.

The gap between presence and recommendation is the defining feature of GoDaddy's position. The brand is named in more AI answers than any competitor, yet it converts that visibility into a shortlist placement roughly one time in thirteen. Google Workspace, by comparison, converts at roughly one in two and a half. The benchmark's own framing applies directly here: GoDaddy shows visibility without recommendation conversion.

Sentiment framing is the second concern. GoDaddy's net sentiment score of 0.0866 is the lowest among all brands with any presence in the benchmark. Of 254 mentions, 210 were neutral, 33 were positive, and 11 were negative. The brand is overwhelmingly present as context, reference, or comparison anchor rather than as a recommended option. Neutral mentions carry no recommendation credit under the benchmark's rules, which means the majority of GoDaddy's AI footprint is commercially inert.

Placement quality reinforces the pattern. GoDaddy recorded 10 top-three placements and 3 rank-one placements across the qualified set, producing a 3.21% top-three rate and a 0.96% rank-one rate. When the brand does earn a recommendation, its average recommended rank is 3.28, the weakest average position of any brand with rank-eligible recommendations except OVHcloud at 3.47.

Platform behavior is uneven. GoDaddy's strongest recommendation signal appears on Perplexity, where it holds a 12.12% valid recommendation coverage and a 9.09% top-three rate. Its weakest recommendation signal appears on Copilot, where it recorded zero valid recommendations, zero top-three placements, and a negative net sentiment score of -0.2 across 20 mentions. Google AI Mode carries the largest share of GoDaddy's raw presence, with 72 mentions across 84 observations, but converts only 7 of those into valid recommendations.

The clearest structural gap is cluster coverage. All 312 qualified observations in September 2026 fell into the Brand Recommendation cluster. The benchmark recorded zero qualified observations in the Pricing and Value cluster and zero in the Multi-Brand Comparison cluster. GoDaddy's high-presence, low-conversion profile is therefore measured only against direct recommendation prompts, and the brand's performance on pricing and head-to-head comparison questions remains outside what the public data can address.

The opportunity is specific. GoDaddy does not need more mentions. It needs the mentions it already earns to convert into shortlist placement. That is a framing, evidence, and citation problem rather than a reach problem.

What GoDaddy Is Winning

Questions This Section Answers

  • Where does GoDaddy actually win in AI-hosted exchange answers?
  • Which platform already converts GoDaddy mentions into hosted exchange recommendations?

GoDaddy's clearest win is raw presence. At 81.41%, the brand is mentioned in more qualified observations than Google Workspace at 69.23%, IONOS at 39.42%, and every other tracked brand. In a category where most competitors struggle to appear at all, GoDaddy is consistently retrieved and referenced.

The second win is Perplexity. GoDaddy holds a 12.12% valid recommendation coverage on Perplexity, its strongest platform result, alongside a 9.09% top-three rate and a 3.03% rank-one rate. That coverage is higher than its overall benchmark coverage of 7.69%, which indicates Perplexity is currently the platform where GoDaddy's recommendation case lands most effectively.

The third win is negative framing avoidance. GoDaddy recorded 11 negative mentions against 254 total, a negative visibility rate of 3.53%. The brand is not being actively cautioned against in most AI answers. It is being mentioned without being recommended, which is a materially better starting position than being mentioned as a risk.

Beyond these three signals, the win column is thin. GoDaddy does not lead any cluster, does not hold a top-three rate above 5% on any platform, and does not appear as a rank-one recommendation on ChatGPT, Copilot, AI Mode, or AI Overviews.

Where GoDaddy Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why does GoDaddy's 81.41% presence only produce 7.69% recommendation coverage?
  • Where is GoDaddy most visible but least recommended across AI platforms?
  • Which buyer-stage clusters carry GoDaddy's biggest coverage gaps?

The primary gap is recommendation conversion. GoDaddy appears in 81.41% of qualified observations and is recommended in 7.69%. Google Workspace appears in 69.23% and is recommended in 37.82%. GoDaddy is mentioned more often than the category leader and recommended roughly one fifth as often. The benchmark's own diagnostic question applies: why does strong presence produce only 7.69% coverage?

The second gap is Copilot. GoDaddy recorded 20 mentions on Copilot across 33 observations, a 60.61% presence rate, and zero valid recommendations. Its Copilot net sentiment score was -0.2, the only negative platform sentiment score recorded for the brand. Copilot is the platform where GoDaddy is most visible relative to its own baseline and least recommended.

The third gap is rank-one placement. GoDaddy holds a 0.96% rank-one rate, meaning it is the first or only recommendation in 3 of 312 qualified observations. Google Workspace holds 27.56% and IONOS holds 5.13%. When GoDaddy does enter a shortlist, it typically enters below the first position, with an average recommended rank of 3.28.

The fourth gap is neutral mention concentration. Of GoDaddy's 254 mentions, 210 were classified neutral. Neutral mentions receive no recommendation credit under the benchmark's scoring rules. This means 82.68% of GoDaddy's AI footprint is present but commercially inactive, and the brand's effective recommendation surface is far smaller than its raw visibility suggests.

The fifth gap is cluster coverage. GoDaddy's strongest cluster result sits in the Best Hosted Exchange Services cluster, where it holds a 3.21% top-three rate. The benchmark recorded no qualified observations for GoDaddy in the Hosted Exchange Provider Comparisons cluster or the Hosted Exchange Pricing and Plans cluster. Those two clusters carry buyer-stage multipliers of 1.25 and 1.5 respectively in the benchmark's valuation model, which means the prompts where GoDaddy is absent are the prompts weighted most heavily toward decision-stage buyers.

Biggest Opportunity

Questions This Section Answers

  • Which platforms offer the largest conversion gain from GoDaddy's existing mention base?
  • What would GoDaddy's coverage look like if Copilot and AI Mode converted at its Perplexity rate?

GoDaddy's single largest opportunity is converting its existing neutral mention base into recommendation-eligible framing on Copilot and Google AI Mode, the two platforms where its presence is highest and its recommendation conversion is weakest.

Copilot alone accounts for 20 GoDaddy mentions and zero valid recommendations. Google AI Mode accounts for 72 mentions and 7 valid recommendations. Together these two platforms carry 92 of GoDaddy's 254 mentions and 7 of its 24 valid recommendations. If GoDaddy's conversion rate on these two platforms matched its Perplexity rate of 12.12%, the brand would add roughly 4 valid recommendations on Copilot and roughly 2 on AI Mode, lifting overall coverage by approximately 2 points without any increase in raw presence.

The path runs through the owned answer layer and the citation layer, not through additional reach. GoDaddy is already being retrieved. The question is what the retrieved evidence says about the brand when a buyer asks an AI system to recommend a hosted exchange provider.

Competitive Landscape

Questions This Section Answers

  • How does GoDaddy's placement and sentiment compare with Google Workspace and IONOS in hosted exchange?
  • What separates GoDaddy from OVHcloud when their top-three rates are tied?

Google Workspace holds dominant recommendation power in the Hosted Exchange category, with IONOS as the strongest challenger and GoDaddy as the highest-presence, lowest-conversion brand in the tracked set. GoDaddy ranks third by valid recommendation coverage but first by raw mention presence, a combination that places it outside the recommendation-led tier despite its visibility.

GoDaddy's position in the table shows a brand with meaningful top-three presence but weak first-position strength and the lowest sentiment framing of any brand with a recommendation footprint. Its 3.21% top-three rate ties OVHcloud, but OVHcloud carries a sentiment score of 0.7647 against GoDaddy's 0.0866, and OVHcloud's average recommended rank of 3.47 sits only slightly below GoDaddy's 3.28. The distinguishing weakness for GoDaddy is framing quality, not placement depth.

Prompt Evidence

Perplexity / Best Hosted Exchange Services Prompt: "What is the best hosted exchange provider for a small business?" Result: GoDaddy appeared in the answer and earned a valid recommendation, one of its strongest platform-level outcomes.

Copilot / Best Hosted Exchange Services Prompt: "Which hosted exchange service should I choose for my company?" Result: GoDaddy was mentioned as a comparison reference but received no valid recommendation credit, consistent with its zero-recommendation Copilot result.

Google AI Mode / Best Hosted Exchange Services Prompt: "cheap web hosting" Result: GoDaddy surfaced in the response as a neutral reference, contributing to its 70.24% neutral visibility rate on AI Mode without a recommendation placement.

Google AI Overviews / Best Hosted Exchange Services Prompt: "business email domain" Result: GoDaddy appeared in the overview as context alongside other providers, with no top-three placement recorded.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Market Discovery Audit Map every prompt where GoDaddy is mentioned without a recommendation, separating Copilot and AI Mode neutral mentions from Perplexity recommendation wins to identify the exact framing conditions that produce shortlist credit.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Define the recommendation-eligible attributes GoDaddy needs to be associated with on hosted exchange prompts, and prioritize the Copilot and AI Mode surfaces where presence is highest and conversion is lowest.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Build GoDaddy-owned pages and structured content that answer the specific hosted exchange recommendation questions where the brand currently appears as a neutral reference, so retrieval surfaces recommendation-ready evidence rather than comparison context.

Phase 4: Citation and Authority Layer Development Strengthen the third-party source footprint that AI systems draw on when forming hosted exchange recommendations, focusing on the source types that appear alongside recommendation-stage answers on Copilot and AI Mode.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track GoDaddy's presence, valid recommendation coverage, top-three rate, rank-one rate, and sentiment by platform and cluster each month, with Copilot conversion as the primary leading indicator.

Why This Matters

GoDaddy is winning the mention stage and losing the recommendation stage. In AI-led discovery, those are different commercial events. A buyer who asks an AI system for a hosted exchange recommendation receives a shortlist, not a list of brands. GoDaddy's 81.41% presence rate does not put it on that shortlist. Its 7.69% recommendation coverage does, and only rarely.

The next move is not more visibility. It is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers that determine whether a mention becomes a recommendation. GoDaddy already has the retrieval footprint. What it needs is recommendation-eligible framing on the platforms and prompts where it is currently present as context rather than as a choice.

Sentiment Score

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions x 1 + neutral mentions x 0 + negative mentions x -1) / total mentions

For GoDaddy in September 2026: (33 x 1 + 210 x 0 + 11 x -1) / 254 = 22 / 254 = 0.0866.

This score matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. GoDaddy's 254 mentions look like a dominant position until the mentions are classified. Once they are, 210 of them are neutral references that carry no recommendation credit, 33 are positive, and 11 are negative. The brand's effective positive footprint is 33 observations, not 254.

Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal events in a buyer's decision process. Counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement. GoDaddy's 0.0866 sentiment score is the lowest among all brands with any presence in the benchmark, and it is the clearest single indicator that the brand's AI footprint is broad but shallow.

Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility. GoDaddy's raw presence rate of 81.41% and its net sentiment score of 0.0866 tell two different stories, and only the second one describes how AI systems are actually framing the brand to buyers.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of GoDaddy's position in the Hosted Exchange category, produced from the LLM Authority Index AI Market Discovery Index and the associated September 2026 metrics aggregation. It is not a client implementation result.
  2. The reporting window is September 2026, with July 2026 and August 2026 reference points where the benchmark provides them.
  3. Six AI and search surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. All six were present in each month of the series.
  4. The September 2026 run began with 800 prompt-surface observations, produced 646 unique questions, and yielded 312 qualified benchmark observations after relevance and qualification filtering.
  5. Ten brands were tracked in the competitor universe: Google Workspace, IONOS, GoDaddy, OVHcloud, Zoho Inventory, Intermedia, Rackspace Email, Microsoft SharePoint, Amazon WorkMail, and AppRiver.
  6. Three public clusters were defined: Best Hosted Exchange Services (consideration), Hosted Exchange Provider Comparisons (evaluation), and Hosted Exchange Pricing and Plans (decision). Only the first cluster produced qualified observations in September 2026.
  7. Stage 0 extraction retained the query, surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and, where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources for each observation.
  8. A mention is counted when a tracked brand appears in a qualified observation in any capacity, including neutral reference, comparison anchor, or cautionary framing.
  9. A valid recommendation is counted only when the dataset explicitly marks the brand as appearing in a legitimate recommendation context. Neutral, cautionary, comparison-anchor, and listed-only mentions do not receive recommendation credit.
  10. Brand-level percentages use the 312 qualified observations as the public denominator, not the raw 800-observation collection.
  11. The benchmark's public series measures Brand Recommendation discovery only. It cannot answer pricing, value, or head-to-head comparison questions for the Hosted Exchange category in September 2026.
  12. Movement between months identifies changes worth investigating. It does not establish cause. Source presence in the evidence layer is not treated as proof that a source caused a recommendation.

See Where GoDaddy Stands in AI Recommendations

The public benchmark shows that GoDaddy is mentioned more than any other brand in Hosted Exchange and recommended less than the category leader by a wide margin. A company-level AI visibility audit maps the specific prompts, platforms, competitors, and evidence sources behind that gap, and identifies which neutral mentions can be converted into recommendation-eligible placements.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
