Answer Capsule

SailPoint holds the second-strongest recommendation position in the Identity and Access Management category, with 34.12% valid recommendation coverage in September 2026, trailing category leader Okta by 3.9 percentage points. The brand appears in 73.73% of qualified AI observations but converts that presence into valid recommendations at a rate that leaves meaningful headroom. SailPoint's clearest strength is its top-three placement rate of 24.71%, which improved from 17.8% in July 2026, while its clearest weakness is a rank-one rate of just 3.92%, far behind Okta's 21.96%. The biggest opportunity lies in converting strong second-position visibility into first-choice recommendations across high-intent brand recommendation prompts.

Executive Summary

SailPoint holds a strong but second-place position in AI-generated recommendations for Identity and Access Management. The September 2026 LLM Authority Index benchmark shows SailPoint with 34.12% valid recommendation coverage, down slightly from 35.1% in July 2026, while category leader Okta holds 38.04% coverage. The 3.9-point gap between the two leaders narrowed from 4.9 points in August 2026, but the leadership tier structure did not change.

SailPoint received 87 valid recommendations from 255 qualified observations, with 188 total mentions. The brand recorded 126 positive mentions, 62 neutral mentions, and zero negative mentions, producing a net sentiment score of 0.6702. This positive framing quality is the strongest among the top three brands in the category.

The strongest cluster for SailPoint is Best Identity Management Solutions & Platforms, which accounts for all 255 qualified observations in the current public series. The weakest area is first-choice positioning: SailPoint's rank-one rate of 3.92% is dramatically lower than Okta's 21.96%, meaning AI systems consistently place SailPoint in the shortlist but rarely name it first.

The strongest platform signal for SailPoint is Google AI Overviews, where the brand reaches 50.63% valid recommendation coverage and a 37.97% top-three rate. The clearest platform gap is ChatGPT, where SailPoint holds only 17.65% valid recommendation coverage despite appearing in 91.18% of observations, suggesting substantial visibility without recommendation conversion.

What SailPoint Is Winning

SailPoint's top-three recommendation rate improved from 17.8% in July 2026 to 24.71% in September 2026, a gain of nearly 7 points. This means AI systems are increasingly placing SailPoint among the first three recommendations when buyers ask which identity management provider to choose.

SailPoint's net sentiment score of 0.6702 is the strongest among the top three brands in the category, ahead of Okta's 0.6042 and BeyondTrust's 0.6714. The brand recorded zero negative mentions across all 255 qualified observations, indicating that AI systems frame SailPoint consistently positively or neutrally.

On Google AI Overviews, SailPoint achieves 50.63% valid recommendation coverage, effectively matching Okta's 51.90% on that surface. This platform represents SailPoint's strongest recommendation environment and demonstrates that the brand can compete at parity with the category leader when the source layer supports it.

Where SailPoint Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • Where is SailPoint losing ground on first-choice positioning in AI recommendations?
  • Why does SailPoint's high visibility on ChatGPT fail to convert into valid recommendations?

SailPoint's most significant gap is first-choice positioning. The brand holds a rank-one rate of just 3.92%, compared with Okta's 21.96%. When AI systems recommend SailPoint, the average recommended rank is 2.78, meaning the brand typically appears second or third in the shortlist. Okta's average recommended rank is 1.62, placing it first or second far more consistently.

The visibility-to-recommendation conversion gap is most pronounced on ChatGPT. SailPoint appears in 91.18% of ChatGPT observations but converts that presence into valid recommendations only 17.65% of the time. This means the brand is frequently mentioned as context or comparison but is not being selected as a recommended option on this platform.

SailPoint's presence rate of 73.73% trails Okta's 94.12% by more than 20 points. While SailPoint is clearly a recognized brand in the category, there remains a meaningful set of prompts where AI systems do not surface SailPoint at all, and those prompts are likely going to Okta.

Biggest Opportunity

Questions This Section Answers

  • What is the largest addressable opportunity for SailPoint in AI-driven identity management recommendations?

The clearest opportunity for SailPoint is converting its strong second-position presence into first-choice recommendations. The brand already achieves a top-three rate of 24.71% and an average recommended rank of 2.78, meaning AI systems consistently recognize SailPoint as a valid option. The gap between SailPoint's 3.92% rank-one rate and Okta's 21.96% rank-one rate represents the single largest addressable opportunity in the category.

This requires strengthening the public evidence layer that supports first-choice framing: analyst recognition, customer validation, and category-specific authority signals that give AI systems a reason to place SailPoint first rather than second. The brand recommendation cluster is the only active buyer-intent class in the current public series, so the priority is winning the first position within that cluster rather than expanding into comparison or pricing prompts that the benchmark does not yet measure.

Competitive Landscape

Questions This Section Answers

  • How does SailPoint's recommendation position compare with Okta's across the leadership tier?

Okta and SailPoint form a two-brand leadership tier in AI-generated recommendations, with Okta holding the top position and SailPoint as the strongest challenger. BeyondTrust holds a distant third place, and the remaining seven tracked brands have minimal or no recommendation presence.

The table shows SailPoint in second position by top-three rate, behind Okta. The most striking difference is rank-one rate: Okta is named first in 21.96% of observations while SailPoint is named first in only 3.92%. SailPoint's sentiment score of 0.6702 is higher than Okta's 0.6042, indicating that when the brand is mentioned, the framing is consistently positive. The commercial distinction is clear: SailPoint is a strong shortlist presence, but Okta holds first-choice preference across AI platforms.

Prompt Evidence

Google AI Overviews / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "What is the best identity management platform for enterprise?" Result: SailPoint appeared in the recommendation shortlist with 50.63% valid recommendation coverage on this platform, its strongest surface.

ChatGPT / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "Which IAM provider should we choose?" Result: SailPoint was present in 91.18% of ChatGPT observations but received valid recommendations in only 17.65%, indicating frequent mention without selection.

Copilot / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "Recommend an identity governance solution" Result: SailPoint achieved 25.00% valid recommendation coverage on Copilot with a 19.44% top-three rate, though it recorded no rank-one placements on this platform.

Gemini / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "Best identity and access management tools" Result: SailPoint reached 23.33% valid recommendation coverage on Gemini with an average recommended rank of 2.0, placing it consistently in the top three when recommended.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Market Discovery Audit Map the specific prompts where SailPoint is mentioned but not recommended, identifying which competitor receives the recommendation instead and which surfaces drive the conversion gap.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Prioritize the prompt clusters and platforms where SailPoint's visibility is highest but recommendation conversion is weakest, starting with ChatGPT where the presence-to-recommendation gap is largest.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Develop owned content that directly answers high-intent brand recommendation prompts, giving AI systems clear, citable material that frames SailPoint as a first-choice option rather than a second-position alternative.

Phase 4: Citation / Authority Layer Development Strengthen the third-party evidence layer that supports first-position recommendations, including analyst recognition, customer validation, and category authority signals that AI systems can retrieve and cite.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track SailPoint's rank-one rate and average recommended rank monthly to measure whether the gap with Okta narrows as the evidence layer strengthens.

Why This Matters

AI-generated recommendations are becoming the buyer shortlist for identity and access management decisions. When a buyer asks which IAM provider to choose, the first brand named carries disproportionate weight, and SailPoint is currently being named first only 3.92% of the time compared with Okta's 21.96%.

Presence alone is not enough. SailPoint appears in nearly three-quarters of qualified AI observations, but the brand is being positioned as a strong second option rather than the default choice. The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers to shift SailPoint from a consistently recommended alternative to the first-choice recommendation.

Sentiment Score

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why is a raw mention count misleading when evaluating SailPoint's AI visibility?
  • How is SailPoint's net sentiment score calculated and what does it measure?

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions

For SailPoint in September 2026, this calculation is (126 × 1 + 62 × 0 + 0 × -1) / 188, producing a net sentiment score of 0.6702.

This score matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A raw mention total of 188 tells you how often SailPoint appears, but it does not tell you whether those appearances frame the brand positively, neutrally, or negatively. Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI; being mentioned frequently is not the same as being recommended favorably.

A positive recommendation, neutral reference, cautionary mention, and competitor-displaced mention are not equal. Counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement because it treats a neutral listing alongside a direct recommendation as the same outcome. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, because the framing quality of each mention determines whether presence translates into buyer consideration.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of SailPoint's AI visibility and recommendation position in the Identity and Access Management category, derived from the LLM Authority Index AI Market Discovery Index. It is not a client implementation case study.
  2. The reporting window is September 2026, with comparative reference to July 2026 and August 2026 where the public series supports it.
  3. Six AI and search surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, and AI Mode.
  4. The benchmark collection began with 800 prompt-surface observations, of which 368 were relevant to the category and 432 were excluded as out of scope.
  5. After relevance and eligibility qualification, 255 qualified observations formed the public denominator for all brand-level metrics.
  6. The competitor universe included 10 tracked brands: Axiad, BeyondTrust, CLEAR (by Alclear, LLC), Cross Match Technologies, Keyfactor, Okta, RSA Security, SailPoint, Semperis, and Telos Corporation.
  7. All 255 qualified observations fell into the Brand Recommendation buyer-intent class. The public series does not yet contain qualified observations in the Pricing & Value or Multi-Brand Comparison classes.
  8. A mention is defined as any appearance of a tracked brand in an AI answer, regardless of whether the brand was recommended.
  9. A valid recommendation is defined as a positive mention in which the brand is explicitly recommended or shortlisted, with rank-eligible recommendations receiving position credit from 1 to 10.
  10. Raw mention presence, valid recommendation coverage, top-three rate, rank-one rate, and net sentiment are separate signals and should not be collapsed into a single visibility metric.
  11. The three-month series from July to September 2026 is too short to establish trends, and small-count movements for brands with fewer than five observations should not be over-read.
  12. Limitations: the public benchmark does not measure market share, attributable sales, every possible AI response, organic-search ranking, or causality from metric movement alone. Source presence is evidence about the information environment, not proof that a source caused a recommendation.

Get Your AI Visibility Audit

The public benchmark shows where SailPoint stands in AI-generated recommendations, but it cannot identify the specific prompts, competitors, and sources driving each result. A company-level AI visibility audit maps those patterns into a prioritized strategy for converting strong second-position presence into first-choice recommendations.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
