Key Takeaways

  • Orkin led the category with 43.8% valid recommendation coverage, only 1.5 points ahead of Terminix.
  • Its visibility stayed near universal at 97.1%, but rank-one recommendation rate fell from 34.5% in July to 20.5% in September.
  • The biggest platform gap was on Google AI Overviews, where Orkin appeared in 98.0% of observations but converted only 30.0% into valid recommendations.

Answer Capsule

Orkin leads the September 2026 LLM Authority Index pest control benchmark with 43.8% valid recommendation coverage, 1.5 points ahead of Terminix at 42.3%. Orkin holds dominant recommendation power in the category, but its coverage fell 14.0 points from July 2026 and its rank-one rate dropped from 34.5% to 20.5% over the same period. The clearest win is raw presence: Orkin appeared in 97.1% of qualified observations. The clearest weakness is conversion of that presence into first-choice placement. The clearest opportunity is recovering rank-one recommendation share in the brand discovery and evaluation cluster.

Executive Summary

Orkin remains the most recommended pest control brand in the September 2026 LLM Authority Index benchmark, with 43.8% valid recommendation coverage across 454 qualified observations. That lead is real but narrowing. Orkin's coverage fell 8.3 points from August 2026 and 14.0 points from July 2026, and its margin over Terminix has compressed from 15.2 points in July to 1.5 points in September.

The decline is not a visibility problem. Orkin appeared in 97.1% of qualified observations in September, essentially unchanged from 98.1% in July. The brand is losing shortlist inclusion frequency and top position, not raw presence. Orkin carried 199 valid recommendations in September versus 246 in July, and its rank-one count fell from 147 to 93.

Placement quality eroded alongside coverage. Orkin's top-three rate fell 12.2 points from 51.2% to 39.0%, and its rank-one rate fell 14.0 points from 34.5% to 20.5%. Average recommended rank moved from 1.37 to 1.68, meaning that when Orkin is recommended, it now appears lower on average.

Sentiment framing remains positive. Orkin recorded 252 positive mentions, 185 neutral mentions, and 4 negative mentions in September, producing a net sentiment score of 0.5624. The brand is not being framed negatively. It is being framed less decisively as the first choice.

The strongest platform signal is Copilot, where Orkin reached a 55.17% valid recommendation coverage rate and a 34.48% rank-one rate. The strongest platform by volume is Google AI Overviews, where Orkin appeared in 98.0% of observations but converted only 30.0% into valid recommendations. That gap between presence and recommendation is the clearest platform-level weakness in the dataset.

The weakest cluster signal is structural. All 454 qualified observations fell into the brand discovery and evaluation cluster. The benchmark's comparison and pricing clusters produced zero qualified observations in September, so Orkin's performance in head-to-head and cost-driven buyer journeys is not measured in this public series.

What Orkin Is Winning

Questions This Section Answers

  • Where does Orkin still hold the category lead in AI recommendations?
  • How does Orkin's presence rate compare with its rank-one placement across platforms?
  • What role does sentiment play in Orkin's continued recommendation lead?

Orkin holds the category lead in valid recommendation coverage at 43.8%, ahead of Terminix at 42.3% and every other tracked brand by more than 27 points. It has retained the coverage lead in all three months of the series.

Orkin also leads the category in rank-one rate at 20.5%, ahead of Terminix at 17.2%. Close coverage between the two leaders masks a meaningful first-choice gap that still favors Orkin.

Raw presence is close to universal. Orkin appeared in 97.1% of qualified observations, the highest presence rate in the benchmark and slightly ahead of Terminix at 94.05%.

Copilot is Orkin's strongest platform by recommendation behavior. Orkin reached 55.17% valid recommendation coverage and a 34.48% rank-one rate on Copilot, with an average recommended rank of 1.44.

Negative framing is minimal. Orkin recorded 4 negative mentions against 252 positive mentions, a negative visibility rate of 0.88%. The decline in recommendation credit is not being driven by reputational framing.

Where Orkin Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why is Orkin's near-universal presence not converting into first-choice recommendations?
  • Where is the widest gap between Orkin's presence and valid recommendation coverage by platform?
  • How is Terminix's rank-one movement exposing Orkin's competitive displacement at the top?

The clearest gap is conversion of presence into prime placement. Orkin appears in nearly every qualified answer but is recommended first in only about one in five. The 97.1% presence rate against a 20.5% rank-one rate is the single largest structural gap in Orkin's September profile.

The second gap is shortlist inclusion. Orkin's valid recommendation coverage fell to 43.8%, meaning the brand is absent from valid recommendation shortlists in more than half of qualified observations. In July 2026, that figure was 57.8%.

The third gap is platform-level. On Google AI Overviews, Orkin appeared in 98.0% of observations but converted only 30.0% into valid recommendations, with a rank-one rate of 13.33%. On Google AI Mode, presence was 96.15% against 43.08% valid recommendation coverage and a 20.0% rank-one rate. These two surfaces carry the largest observation volumes in the dataset and the widest presence-to-recommendation gaps.

The fourth gap is competitive displacement at the top. Terminix's rank-one rate rose from 15.0% in July to 17.2% in September while Orkin's fell from 34.5% to 20.5%. Terminix is being removed from shortlists more often, but within the shortlists where it remains, it is holding or improving its first-position share. Orkin is losing ground on both dimensions.

The fifth gap is measurement coverage. The benchmark's comparison and pricing clusters produced zero qualified observations in September, so Orkin's position in head-to-head and cost-driven buyer journeys is not visible in this series. That is a data boundary, not a confirmed weakness, but it limits what the current benchmark can say about Orkin's full recommendation footprint.

Biggest Opportunity

Questions This Section Answers

  • Which prompt cluster offers the largest opportunity for Orkin to recover rank-one recommendation share?
  • Which Google surfaces carry the widest presence-to-recommendation gaps for Orkin?

The single largest opportunity is recovering rank-one recommendation share in the brand discovery and evaluation cluster, where all 454 qualified observations sit. Orkin already holds near-universal presence in these answers. The commercial gap is that presence is not converting into first-choice placement at the rate it did in July 2026.

The platform-level version of this opportunity is Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. These two surfaces carry the highest observation volumes and the widest gaps between Orkin's presence rate and its valid recommendation coverage. Closing even part of that gap would move Orkin's rank-one rate without requiring new presence.

Competitive Landscape

Questions This Section Answers

  • How do Orkin and Terminix compare on top-three rate, rank-one rate, and average recommended rank?
  • How far ahead of the next tier of pest control brands are Orkin and Terminix?
  • Which brands trail Orkin by the widest margin on recommendation metrics?

Orkin and Terminix hold recommendation-stage strength in the pest control category, and every other tracked brand sits below 17% valid recommendation coverage. Orkin leads on coverage and rank-one rate, but its margin over Terminix has narrowed to 1.5 points.

Prompt Evidence

Google AI Overviews / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "What is the best pest control company in Orlando?" Result: Orkin appeared in the answer but converted to a valid recommendation at a lower rate than its overall presence, consistent with the platform's 30.0% coverage against 98.0% presence.

Google AI Mode / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "best pest control knoxville, tn" Result: Orkin was present in the answer set, with Google AI Mode showing 43.08% valid recommendation coverage and a 20.0% rank-one rate across its observations.

Copilot / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "pest control services" Result: Orkin reached its strongest platform result here, with 55.17% valid recommendation coverage and a 34.48% rank-one rate on Copilot.

ChatGPT / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "How much does pest control cost in Tucson?" Result: Orkin appeared with a 47.06% valid recommendation coverage rate and a 14.71% rank-one rate on ChatGPT, with 3 negative mentions recorded against 20 positive mentions on the platform.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Market Discovery Audit Map every prompt where Orkin is present but not recommended first, and identify which competitor takes the rank-one slot in each case.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Prioritize the Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode surfaces, where Orkin's presence-to-recommendation gap is widest and observation volume is highest.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Strengthen the pages and structured content that answer brand discovery and evaluation prompts directly, so retrieval systems have a clearer first-choice signal to synthesize.

Phase 4: Citation / Authority Layer Development Audit the public evidence layer behind Orkin's recommendation credit, including which source types and referring domains appear in the answers where Orkin is recommended first versus where it is only mentioned.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track valid recommendation coverage, top-three rate, and rank-one rate monthly by platform and cluster, so movement is caught before it compounds across a second and third month.

Why This Matters

Orkin is present in almost every AI answer a pest control buyer sees. That presence is not the same as being recommended first, and the September benchmark shows the two diverging. Coverage fell 14.0 points from July while presence held at 97.1%, which means the loss happened at the recommendation and ranking stage, not the visibility stage.

Buyers who ask an AI assistant which pest control company to choose are forming a shortlist inside that answer. Orkin is on most of those shortlists, but it is now the first recommendation far less often than it was in July. The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers that determine first-choice placement, not a broad visibility push.

Sentiment Score

Questions This Section Answers

  • What does Orkin's net sentiment score reveal about its mention profile?
  • Why do neutral mentions matter more than raw mention counts for interpreting Orkin's recommendation credit?

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions

For Orkin in September 2026: (252 × 1 + 185 × 0 + 4 × -1) / 441 = 0.5624.

This matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A brand can appear in nearly every answer and still lose the recommendation if most of those appearances are neutral references rather than positive recommendations. Orkin's 185 neutral mentions are the largest single block in its mention profile, and they carry no recommendation weight under this formula.

Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal events. Counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, because it separates framing quality from recommendation credit.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of Orkin's position in the September 2026 LLM Authority Index AI Market Discovery Index for Pest Control Services. It is not a client implementation result.
  2. The reporting window is September 2026, with July 2026 as the baseline month and August 2026 as the intermediate reading.
  3. Six AI/search surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode.
  4. The September run began with 800 prompt-surface observations and produced 454 qualified observations after relevance and eligibility qualification.
  5. Ten brands were tracked: Orkin, Terminix, Aptive, Rentokil, Arrow Exterminators, Truly Nolen, Massey Services, Bulwark, Hawx Pest Control, and Western Exterminator.
  6. Three public clusters were defined: Best Pest Control Services - Discovery & Evaluation, Pest Control Company Comparisons - Alternatives & Competitors, and Pest Control Pricing - Cost & Plan Research.
  7. Only the discovery and evaluation cluster produced qualified observations in September. The comparison and pricing clusters produced zero qualified observations, so all brand-level percentages in this report reflect brand discovery and evaluation journeys.
  8. A mention is counted when Orkin appears in a qualified observation in any form, including neutral reference.
  9. A valid recommendation is counted only when Orkin appears in a valid recommendation shortlist as marked by the dataset. Neutral, cautionary, and listed-only mentions are not counted as valid recommendations.
  10. Top-three rate and rank-one rate are calculated within the qualified observation set of 454, not the raw collection of 800.
  11. Average recommended rank covers rank-eligible recommendations only, meaning positive valid recommendations with a rank between 1 and 10.
  12. Several brands in this vertical carry small absolute counts. Orkin and Terminix hold large enough counts that their leadership positions are robust, but month-over-month movement in smaller brands should be read as signal to investigate rather than a refined estimate.
  13. The benchmark measures recommendation credit and placement. It does not measure market share, attributable sales, organic search ranking, or causality from a metric movement alone.

See Where AI Is Recommending Your Brand

The public benchmark shows where Orkin stands in AI-generated recommendations across the pest control category. A company-level AI visibility audit maps the specific prompts, platforms, competitors, and source patterns behind those numbers, so the next move is targeted rather than broad.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
