Answer Capsule
Nationwide holds 34.2% valid recommendation coverage in the September 2026 umbrella insurance benchmark, placing it sixth of ten tracked brands. The company is visible in 65.3% of qualified AI answers but converts that presence into a valid recommendation shortlist far less often, and its top-three rate of 2.3% shows it is rarely placed near the top of AI-generated lists. Nationwide's clearest strength is a positive framing profile with no meaningful negative sentiment, while its clearest weakness is a wide gap between presence and recommendation placement. The clearest opportunity is converting its existing mid-field visibility into top-three recommendation positions in the brand recommendation cluster where all qualified observations sit.
Who This Report Is For
This report is for Nationwide's marketing, brand, and digital strategy leaders who need to understand how AI systems recommend umbrella insurance providers and where Nationwide is being displaced in the buyer shortlist.

Executive Summary
Nationwide holds 34.2% valid recommendation coverage in the September 2026 umbrella insurance benchmark, ranking sixth among ten tracked brands. The company appears in 65.3% of qualified AI answers, but only converts that presence into a valid recommendation shortlist in roughly half of those cases. This presence-to-recommendation gap is the central finding: Nationwide is mentioned often but recommended far less often.
The September 2026 benchmark recorded 386 qualified observations across six AI surface families. Nationwide's raw mention presence rate of 65.3% places it mid-field, ahead of Chubb, Liberty Mutual, GEICO RV Insurance, and Progressive RV Insurance, but well behind category leaders USAA at 95.9% and State Farm at 99.0%.
Nationwide's recommendation placement is weak relative to its presence. Its top-three rate of 2.3% means it appears in the first three recommendation positions in fewer than one in forty qualified observations. Its rank-one rate of 0.8% is similarly low. The average recommended rank of 6.4 indicates that when Nationwide does receive rank credit, it typically appears in the lower half of recommendation lists.
The strongest platform signal for Nationwide is Google AI Mode, where it holds 42.9% valid recommendation coverage and a 5.9% top-three rate. The weakest platform signal is Gemini, where coverage drops to 13.7% and top-three rate falls to 5.9%. Copilot shows a notable pattern: Nationwide has 52.5% valid recommendation coverage on Copilot but a top-three rate of only 1.7%, suggesting the platform surfaces Nationwide as a reference more often than as a leading recommendation.
Nationwide's sentiment profile is positive. With 143 positive mentions, 106 neutral mentions, and 3 negative mentions, its net sentiment score of 0.5556 reflects a framing environment that is favorable but not strongly differentiated. The company does not face a negative perception problem in AI answers; it faces a recommendation conversion problem.
The September 2026 benchmark shows a category-wide pullback from August levels. Nationwide declined 8.8 points from August to September, consistent with the broader pattern affecting most tracked brands. Against the July baseline, however, the movement is within normal variation, indicating that Nationwide's position is stable rather than deteriorating.
What Nationwide Is Winning
Questions This Section Answers
- Where does Nationwide perform best across AI platforms for umbrella insurance?
- Which aspects of Nationwide's AI visibility are genuinely strengths versus just relative to weaker competitors?
Nationwide's clearest win is its positive framing profile. With zero significant negative sentiment and a net sentiment score of 0.5556, the company avoids the cautionary or negative framing that affects some competitors. Allstate, for example, carries 13 negative mentions and a lower net sentiment score of 0.5268.
The company also shows a meaningful presence on Copilot, where it holds 52.5% valid recommendation coverage. This is Nationwide's second-strongest platform by coverage and suggests that Copilot surfaces the brand as a viable option in a majority of qualified observations on that platform.
Nationwide's Google AI Mode performance is its strongest platform signal overall. With 42.9% valid recommendation coverage and a 5.9% top-three rate, Google AI Mode represents the platform where Nationwide is most likely to appear in a recommendation context. The platform also shows a rank-one rate of 2.4%, indicating occasional first-position placements.
These wins are narrow. Nationwide does not lead any platform or cluster, and its top-three and rank-one rates remain well below the category leaders. The company has a stable, positively framed presence but has not converted that presence into recommendation leadership on any surface.
Where Nationwide Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps
Questions This Section Answers
- Why does Nationwide appear in most AI answers but rarely earn a recommendation?
- Which platforms show the most severe top-three placement gaps for Nationwide?
- Which competitors are capturing the top-three positions Nationwide is missing?
Nationwide's primary gap is recommendation conversion. The company appears in 65.3% of qualified AI answers but achieves valid recommendation coverage of only 34.2%. This means that in roughly half of the observations where Nationwide is mentioned, it is not included in a valid recommendation shortlist. The company is present as context or reference rather than as a recommended option.
The top-three gap is more severe. Nationwide's top-three rate of 2.3% places it eighth among ten tracked brands, ahead of only Liberty Mutual and Farmers. State Farm, by comparison, holds a top-three rate of 33.4%, more than fourteen times higher. Travelers holds 16.8%, and even Chubb, which ranks seventh by coverage, holds 6.0%. Nationwide's near-absence from top-three positions means the company is rarely presented as a leading option when AI systems generate recommendation lists.
The rank-one gap is similarly pronounced. Nationwide's rank-one rate of 0.8% compares to State Farm's 23.1% and Travelers' 5.4%. The company achieves first-position placement in fewer than one in one hundred qualified observations. When AI systems name a single best option for umbrella insurance, Nationwide is almost never that option.
Platform-level gaps reinforce the pattern. On Gemini, Nationwide's valid recommendation coverage falls to 13.7%, and its top-three rate is 5.9%. On Perplexity, coverage is 32.8% with a top-three rate of 0.0%. On Google AI Overviews, coverage is 38.8% with a top-three rate of 0.0%. These platform-specific gaps suggest that Nationwide's recommendation presence is inconsistent across surfaces and that the company is particularly weak in top-three placement on Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.
The competitive displacement pattern is clear. When Nationwide is mentioned but not recommended, the recommendation positions it might occupy are captured by State Farm, USAA, Travelers, and Allstate. These four brands hold the highest valid recommendation coverage and the strongest top-three rates. Nationwide's gap is not a visibility problem; it is a recommendation conversion problem in a category where the leading brands have established strong shortlist positions.
Biggest Opportunity
Questions This Section Answers
- Which platforms offer the clearest path for Nationwide to convert visibility into top-three recommendations?
- What would it take for Nationwide to move from being mentioned to being recommended in umbrella insurance AI answers?
Nationwide's biggest opportunity is converting its existing mid-field visibility into top-three recommendation positions within the brand recommendation cluster. The company already appears in 65.3% of qualified answers, which means the underlying visibility is present. The gap is in recommendation placement: Nationwide needs to move from being mentioned as a reference to being named as a leading option.
This opportunity is concentrated on platforms where Nationwide already has coverage but weak top-three rates. On Copilot, Nationwide holds 52.5% valid recommendation coverage but only 1.7% top-three rate. On Google AI Overviews, coverage is 38.8% with a 0.0% top-three rate. On Perplexity, coverage is 32.8% with a 0.0% top-three rate. These platforms represent the clearest path from presence to recommendation placement.
The opportunity is also concentrated in the brand recommendation cluster, which accounts for all 386 qualified observations in the September 2026 benchmark. Nationwide does not need to expand into new query types; it needs to strengthen its position in the queries that already exist. The company's positive sentiment profile provides a foundation, but the recommendation architecture that would place Nationwide in top-three positions is not yet in place.
Competitive Landscape
Questions This Section Answers
- How does Nationwide's top-three rate compare to State Farm, USAA, and Travelers?
- Where does Nationwide rank by recommendation coverage versus by top-three placement?
State Farm and USAA hold the strongest recommendation-stage positions in umbrella insurance, with Travelers and Allstate forming a second tier. Nationwide sits in the mid-field, visible but rarely placed in top-three recommendation positions.
Brand | Top-3 rate | Rank-1 rate | Avg recommended rank | Sentiment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
State Farm | 33.42% | 23.06% | 2 | 0.6257 |
Travelers | 16.84% | 5.44% | 4.64 | 0.6466 |
USAA | 15.80% | 4.15% | 3.99 | 0.6919 |
GEICO RV Insurance | 11.66% | 0.26% | 2.91 | 0.6387 |
Progressive RV Insurance | 11.66% | 0.26% | 3.22 | 0.4967 |
Allstate | 8.55% | 0.52% | 4.32 | 0.5268 |
Chubb | 5.96% | 1.04% | 4.96 | 0.6751 |
Nationwide | 2.33% | 0.78% | 6.38 | 0.5556 |
1.55% | 0.00% | 6.34 | 0.5141 | |
Farmers | 0.26% | 0.00% | 6.57 | 0.4912 |
Average recommended rank covers rank-eligible recommendations only.
Nationwide's position in the table reflects its core challenge: the company ranks eighth by top-three rate despite ranking sixth by valid recommendation coverage. Its average recommended rank of 6.38 places it in the lower half of recommendation lists when it does receive rank credit. The sentiment score of 0.5556 is mid-field, indicating that framing is not the constraint.
Prompt Evidence
Google AI Mode / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "Who has the best rates for homeowners insurance?" Result: Nationwide appeared in the answer with positive framing but was not placed in a top-three recommendation position.
Copilot / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "Which is the best company for home insurance?" Result: Nationwide received valid recommendation coverage on Copilot but did not achieve a top-three placement, consistent with the platform's low top-three rate for the brand.
ChatGPT / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "Who is the top 10 car insurance company?" Result: Nationwide was mentioned as part of a broader list but did not appear in the top-three recommendation positions.
Perplexity / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "What is the best home insurance on the market?" Result: Nationwide received valid recommendation coverage but achieved a 0.0% top-three rate on Perplexity, indicating presence without top placement.

Why This Matters
Questions This Section Answers
- What is the commercial consequence of Nationwide's presence-to-recommendation gap in umbrella insurance?
- How does AI recommendation placement affect buyer shortlists for umbrella insurance?
AI systems are increasingly where buyer shortlists are formed. When a buyer asks an AI assistant for the best umbrella insurance provider, the answer that comes back shapes the consideration set before the buyer ever visits a website or speaks to an agent. Nationwide's 65.3% presence rate means the company is part of the conversation, but its 2.3% top-three rate means it is rarely part of the shortlist.
The gap between presence and recommendation is the gap between being known and being chosen. Nationwide does not have a visibility problem in AI answers; it has a recommendation conversion problem. Closing that gap requires targeted work on the prompt, page, and citation layers that AI systems draw from when generating recommendation lists. The September 2026 benchmark shows where Nationwide stands; the next step is understanding why and correcting the specific patterns that keep the brand out of top-three positions.

Sentiment Score
Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions
For Nationwide in September 2026: (143 × 1 + 106 × 0 + 3 × -1) / 252 = 140 / 252 = 0.5556
This score matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A brand that appears frequently but is framed negatively, or appears only as a comparison anchor, is not in the same position as a brand that appears frequently with positive framing. Nationwide's score of 0.5556 indicates a favorable framing environment, but it does not indicate recommendation strength.
Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal. Nationwide's 252 mentions include 106 neutral references where the brand is named but not recommended. Counting all mentions as wins would overstate the company's position. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, and Nationwide's classified profile shows a brand that is positively framed but under-recommended.

Methodology
- This report is a benchmark-based analysis of Nationwide's position in AI-generated umbrella insurance recommendations for September 2026. It is not a client result and does not imply that CiteWorks Studio caused any benchmark outcome.
- The reporting window is September 2026. The benchmark also references July 2026 as a baseline and August 2026 for month-over-month comparison where relevant.
- Six AI surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode. All six families had qualified observations in September 2026.
- The September 2026 benchmark analyzed 386 qualified observations after qualification. The raw collection universe was 800 prompt-surface observations, with 628 unique questions and 426 relevant prompts.
- Ten brands were tracked: Allstate, Chubb, Farmers, GEICO RV Insurance, Liberty Mutual, Nationwide, Progressive RV Insurance, State Farm, Travelers, and USAA.
- Three public high-intent clusters were defined: Best Umbrella Insurance Evaluation (C01, consideration stage), Umbrella Insurance Provider Comparisons (C02, evaluation stage), and Umbrella Insurance Pricing and Cost (C03, decision stage). In September 2026, all 386 qualified observations fell into the Brand Recommendation class, which corresponds to the C01 cluster. Clusters C02 and C03 had zero qualified observations.
- Stage 0 extraction retained the query, AI surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources. Source presence is evidence about the information environment and is not automatically proof that the source caused the recommendation.
- A mention is defined as any appearance of Nationwide in a qualified AI answer, regardless of whether the brand is recommended. Nationwide's raw mention presence rate was 65.28% in September 2026.
- A valid recommendation is defined as an observation where Nationwide appears in a valid recommendation shortlist. Nationwide's valid recommendation coverage was 34.20% in September 2026.
- Top-three rate measures the share of qualified observations where Nationwide appears in the first three recommendation positions. Rank-one rate measures the share where Nationwide is the first recommendation. Average recommended rank covers rank-eligible recommendations only.
- Limitations: The public benchmark does not measure market share, attributable sales, every possible AI response, organic-search ranking, social mention volume, private or sponsored channels, or causality from metric movement alone. The August 2026 tracking set replaced GEICO RV Insurance and Progressive RV Insurance with corporate Geico and Progressive, so those series are not directly comparable across months. The current public series measures brand recommendation discovery only; pricing, value, and multi-brand comparison questions have no qualified observations in this data.
