Answer Capsule
State Farm is the most recommended umbrella insurance brand in AI-generated answers for September 2026, holding a 23.06% rank-one rate and a 33.42% top-three rate across 386 qualified observations. The brand appears in 98.96% of all qualified AI answers, the highest raw mention presence rate in the ten-brand tracking set. Its clearest strength is first-position recommendation power, where it leads the category by more than five times USAA's rank-one rate. Its clearest weakness is that top-three placement softened from July 2026, and its coverage lead narrowed to 2.1 points over USAA. The clearest opportunity is converting near-universal presence into more consistent top-three placement across the six tracked AI platforms.

Executive Summary
State Farm holds the strongest recommendation position in the umbrella insurance category for September 2026. The brand recorded a 23.06% rank-one rate and a 33.42% top-three rate across 386 qualified observations, both category-leading figures. Its raw mention presence rate of 98.96% means State Farm appeared in nearly every qualified AI answer during the reporting month.
The brand's valid recommendation coverage reached 59.59%, placing it second behind USAA at 61.66%. The 2.1-point gap between the two leaders is the narrowest margin in the three-month tracking series, down from 3.1 points in July 2026. State Farm's coverage declined 4.1 points from its July 2026 baseline of 63.7%, a movement within normal variation.
State Farm's top-three rate fell 7.7 points from 41.1% in July 2026 to 33.4% in September 2026. The rank-one rate declined from 24.7% to 23.1% over the same period. These declines occurred while presence remained effectively universal, indicating a placement story rather than a visibility story. The brand is still surfaced in almost every answer but converts that presence into a first-place recommendation less often than in prior months.
The strongest platform signal for State Farm is Google AI Overviews, where the brand achieved a 57.5% rank-one rate and a 65.0% top-three rate. Google AI Mode also showed strong performance with a 32.14% top-three rate and a 13.1% rank-one rate. Perplexity delivered a 15.52% rank-one rate, the second-highest platform figure.
The clearest platform gap is Gemini, where State Farm's top-three rate was 21.57% and rank-one rate was 5.88%, both below the brand's cross-platform averages. Copilot showed a 23.73% top-three rate with a 13.56% rank-one rate, a moderate performance relative to the brand's overall standing.
Sentiment remained strongly positive at 0.6257, with 248 positive mentions, 125 neutral mentions, and 9 negative mentions out of 382 total mentions. The positive visibility rate of 64.25% indicates that when State Farm appears in AI answers, it is framed favorably in nearly two-thirds of cases.
What State Farm Is Winning
Questions This Section Answers
- How large is State Farm's rank-one advantage over competitors like USAA and Travelers?
- Which AI platform delivers State Farm's strongest recommendation performance?
State Farm holds the strongest rank-one recommendation position in the umbrella insurance category. Its 23.06% rank-one rate is more than five times higher than USAA's 4.15% and more than four times higher than Travelers' 5.44%. This first-position advantage represents the clearest competitive moat in the benchmark.
The brand's top-three rate of 33.42% is nearly double the next-highest competitor, Travelers at 16.84%. State Farm appears in the first three recommendation positions in one out of every three qualified AI answers, a placement rate that no other tracked brand approaches.
Google AI Overviews is State Farm's strongest platform. The brand achieved a 65.0% top-three rate and a 57.5% rank-one rate on this surface, with 52 top-three recommendations and 46 rank-one recommendations out of 80 observations. This platform performance substantially exceeds the brand's cross-platform averages.
State Farm's raw mention presence rate of 98.96% is the highest in the tracking set, marginally ahead of USAA at 95.85%. The brand is effectively omnipresent in AI-generated umbrella insurance answers.
Sentiment quality is strong. With 248 positive mentions against only 9 negative mentions, State Farm's net sentiment score of 0.6257 reflects consistently favorable framing. The brand recorded zero negative mentions on Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.
Where State Farm Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps
Questions This Section Answers
- Why does State Farm's near-universal presence not convert into top-three placement?
- Which platforms underperform relative to State Farm's cross-platform recommendation averages?
State Farm's primary gap is the conversion of presence into top-three placement. While the brand appears in 98.96% of qualified answers, it achieves top-three placement in only 33.42% of those observations. This means that in approximately two-thirds of answers where State Farm is mentioned, it is not positioned among the first three recommendations.
The top-three rate declined 7.7 points from July 2026 to September 2026, falling from 41.1% to 33.4%. This decline occurred despite stable presence, suggesting that competitors captured top-three positions that State Farm previously held. USAA, Travelers, and Allstate all maintained or improved their top-three positioning during the same period.
Gemini represents the clearest platform-specific gap. State Farm's top-three rate on Gemini was 21.57%, well below its Google AI Overviews performance of 65.0%. The rank-one rate on Gemini was 5.88%, compared to 57.5% on Google AI Overviews. This platform variance suggests that State Farm's recommendation strength is not evenly distributed across AI surfaces.
Copilot also underperforms relative to the brand's overall standing. The top-three rate on Copilot was 23.73%, and the rank-one rate was 13.56%. While these figures are respectable in absolute terms, they trail the brand's performance on Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode.
The coverage gap to USAA narrowed to 2.1 points in September 2026 from 3.1 points in July 2026. USAA's presence rate of 95.85% is close to State Farm's 98.96%, and USAA's valid recommendation coverage of 61.66% now exceeds State Farm's 59.59%. The competitive margin at the top of the category is tightening.
Biggest Opportunity
Questions This Section Answers
- Which platform gap represents the most direct path to widening State Farm's recommendation lead?
State Farm's clearest opportunity is increasing top-three placement consistency across platforms where the brand is present but under-positioned. The brand already achieves near-universal presence and category-leading rank-one rates on Google AI Overviews. Extending that placement strength to Gemini and Copilot, where top-three rates trail the brand's cross-platform average, represents the most direct path to widening the recommendation gap over USAA and Travelers.
The brand's 98.96% presence rate means State Farm is already in the room for nearly every high-intent umbrella insurance query. The opportunity is not about being found but about being chosen first more consistently. Improving top-three placement on Gemini from 21.57% toward the Google AI Overviews benchmark of 65.0% would substantially increase the brand's recommendation-weighted visibility.
Competitive Landscape
Questions This Section Answers

- What does State Farm's average recommended rank of 2 signal about its typical placement?
State Farm and USAA hold the strongest recommendation-stage positions in the umbrella insurance category, with Travelers as the closest challenger. State Farm leads on rank-one rate and top-three rate, while USAA holds a narrow lead on valid recommendation coverage.

0.26% | 0.00% | 6.5673 | 0.4912 |
Average recommended rank covers rank-eligible recommendations only.
State Farm's position at the top of the table reflects its dominant rank-one and top-three rates. The brand's average recommended rank of 2 is the strongest in the category, indicating that when State Farm receives rank credit, it typically appears in the first or second position. The gap between State Farm's 33.42% top-three rate and Travelers' 16.84% is substantial, but the coverage gap to USAA is narrow.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Monitor top-three and rank-one rates by platform to detect placement shifts early and measure the impact of remediation efforts against the September 2026 baseline.
Why This Matters
State Farm's position in AI-generated recommendations is strong but not static. The brand leads on rank-one rate and top-three rate, but its coverage lead over USAA has narrowed to 2.1 points, and its top-three rate declined 7.7 points from July 2026. In a category where AI systems are increasingly the first stop for buyers researching umbrella insurance, maintaining first-position recommendation strength is a competitive necessity.
Presence alone is not enough. State Farm appears in nearly every qualified AI answer, but it achieves top-three placement in only one-third of those observations. The gap between presence and placement represents the difference between being mentioned and being chosen. Closing that gap requires targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers that shape how AI systems form umbrella insurance recommendations.

Sentiment Score
Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions
State Farm's sentiment score for September 2026 is 0.6257, calculated from 248 positive mentions, 125 neutral mentions, and 9 negative mentions across 382 total mentions.
This score matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A brand can appear frequently in AI answers without being recommended favorably. Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal in value.
Counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement. State Farm's 98.96% presence rate would suggest near-total category dominance if treated as a single visibility metric. But the brand's 59.59% valid recommendation coverage and 33.42% top-three rate tell a more nuanced story. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility. State Farm's positive visibility rate of 64.25% indicates that when the brand appears, it is framed favorably in nearly two-thirds of cases, with negative framing appearing in only 2.33% of mentions.

Methodology
- This report is a benchmark-based analysis of State Farm's AI recommendation performance in the umbrella insurance category for September 2026. It is not a client result and does not imply that CiteWorks Studio caused any benchmark outcome.
- The reporting window is September 2026. The benchmark series includes monthly measurements from July 2026, August 2026, and September 2026.
- Six AI platforms were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode. All six platforms had qualified observations in September 2026.
- The September 2026 benchmark analyzed 386 qualified observations from a raw collection universe of 800 prompt-surface observations. The qualification process removed 374 irrelevant observations and 40 reserved observations.
- The competitor universe includes ten tracked brands: State Farm, USAA, Travelers, Allstate, Farmers, Nationwide, Chubb, Liberty Mutual, GEICO RV Insurance, and Progressive RV Insurance.
- All qualified observations fell into the Brand Recommendation cluster, covering discovery and consideration queries. Pricing and multi-brand comparison clusters had zero qualified observations in the public benchmark.
- Stage 0 extraction retained the query, AI platform, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and citations where exposed. Source presence is evidence about the information environment and is not automatically proof that the source caused the recommendation.
- A mention is defined as any appearance of State Farm in an AI-generated answer, regardless of recommendation status or placement. Raw mention presence rate measures how often the brand appears at all.
- A valid recommendation is defined as an appearance in a recommendation shortlist where the brand receives rank credit. Valid recommendation coverage measures how often the brand is actually recommended or shortlisted.
- The August 2026 tracking set replaced GEICO RV Insurance and Progressive RV Insurance with corporate Geico and Progressive. September 2026 reverted to the RV-specific entities. These series are not directly comparable across months.
- Unique question count for September 2026 was 628 after deduplication. The public benchmark does not expose the full unique prompt list.
- Causality cannot be inferred from metric movement alone. Directional movement identifies changes worth investigating but does not establish the cause of those changes.
