Key Takeaways

  • Zoom leads the web conferencing market on valid recommendation coverage at 62.12%, narrowly ahead of Google Meet at 59.85%.
  • Its main strength is first-position preference: Zoom ranks first in 44.19% of qualified observations, far above every other tracked brand.
  • The core weakness is declining recommendation strength, with rank-one rate down 10.3 points and top-three rate down 10.1 points since July 2026.
  • Gemini is Zoom's clearest platform gap, while Google AI Mode is its strongest surface for recommendation coverage and rank-one performance.

Answer Capsule

Zoom leads the Web Conferencing AI Market Discovery Index in September 2026 with 62.12% valid recommendation coverage, ahead of Google Meet at 59.85%, but its leadership is narrowing. Zoom holds dominant recommendation power: it is the first recommendation in 44.19% of qualified observations, far ahead of every other tracked brand. The clearest weakness is that Zoom's rank-one rate has fallen 10.3 points since July 2026, and its top-three rate has fallen 10.1 points over the same period, meaning its visibility is stable while its recommendation strength erodes. The clearest opportunity is to defend first-position preference in the brand recommendation cluster, where Zoom is still the default answer but no longer the automatic one.

Executive Summary

Zoom remains the most visible and most recommended brand in web conferencing AI discovery. The benchmark shows Zoom present in 96.21% of qualified observations and included in a valid recommendation shortlist in 62.12% of them. It is the strongest challenger to no one: it is the incumbent.

The gap to second place is thin. Google Meet reached 59.85% valid recommendation coverage in September 2026, a difference of 2.27 points. That gap widened slightly from 1.7 points in July 2026, but both leaders declined across the series, and the category leader's coverage has now fallen in each of the two months since the July baseline.

Zoom's recommendation strength is concentrated at the top of the list. Zoom holds a 53.54% top-three rate and a 44.19% rank-one rate. Google Meet, despite near-parity in coverage, reaches first position only 4.55% of the time. Zoom's average recommended rank is 1.29, the strongest in the tracked set.

The erosion is in placement, not presence. Zoom's raw mention presence eased only from 98.3% in July 2026 to 96.21% in September 2026, while its top-three rate fell 10.1 points and its rank-one rate fell 10.3 points. In absolute terms, rank-one placements fell from 228 in July to 175 in September, a loss of 53 first-position recommendations even as the qualified observation set contracted.

Sentiment framing remains strongly positive. Zoom recorded 288 positive mentions, 92 neutral mentions, and 1 negative mention, producing a net sentiment score of 0.7533. That is a healthy framing profile, though slightly below Whereby at 0.875 and ClickMeeting at 0.913, both of which operate on much smaller samples.

The strongest platform signal for Zoom is Google AI Mode, where Zoom holds a 51.52% rank-one rate and a 66.67% valid recommendation coverage rate. The clearest platform gap is Gemini, where Zoom's rank-one rate falls to 25.58% and its valid recommendation coverage to 48.84%, well below its category-wide position.

The benchmark's public series currently contains only the Brand Recommendation buyer-intent class. No qualified observations were classified as Pricing and Value or Multi-Brand Comparison in any tracked month, so this report cannot assess how AI systems frame Zoom on price, value, or head-to-head comparisons.

Several tracked brand labels in this category are not web conferencing providers, including Microsoft SharePoint and Zoho Inventory, which appear as recommendation outcomes without a top-three or rank-one placement. Their presence reflects how AI systems sometimes surface adjacent or incidental products in response to category prompts. Their metrics are reported as recorded in the dataset and should be read as incidental rather than competitive signals.

What Zoom Is Winning

Questions This Section Answers

  • Where does Zoom hold the strongest recommendation position in web conferencing AI discovery?
  • On which AI platform does Zoom perform best?

Zoom holds the strongest recommendation position in the category on every headline placement metric. Its 62.12% valid recommendation coverage, 53.54% top-three rate, 44.19% rank-one rate, and 1.29 average recommended rank are all category-leading figures.

Zoom's rank-one dominance is the clearest win. At 44.19%, Zoom is the first recommendation roughly ten times as often as Google Meet at 4.55%, despite the two brands sitting within 2.3 points of each other on coverage. Coverage parity is hiding a large first-choice gap, and Zoom is on the right side of it.

Zoom's framing quality is strong and stable. With 288 positive mentions against a single negative mention, Zoom's net sentiment score of 0.7533 sits in the top tier of the tracked set and shows no meaningful negative framing pressure.

Zoom performs best on Google AI Mode. On that surface, Zoom holds a 66.67% valid recommendation coverage rate, a 61.62% top-three rate, and a 51.52% rank-one rate, all above its category-wide averages. Google AI Overviews is a close second, with a 72.82% valid recommendation coverage rate and a 53.40% rank-one rate.

Zoom also holds a meaningful position on Copilot, where its rank-one rate reaches 50.00% and its net sentiment score reaches 0.9355, the highest framing quality it records on any tracked platform.

Where Zoom Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • What is the structural gap between Zoom being mentioned and being shortlisted?
  • Where is Zoom losing first-position recommendations?

Zoom's gap is not discoverability. It is recommendation conversion at the top of the list. Zoom is mentioned in 96.21% of qualified observations but appears in a valid recommendation shortlist in only 62.12% of them, a 34-point spread between being surfaced and being shortlisted. That spread is the clearest structural gap in Zoom's profile.

The rank-one decline is the sharpest signal. Zoom lost 53 first-position recommendations between July 2026 and September 2026, falling from a 54.5% rank-one rate to 44.19%. Its top-three rate fell 10.1 points over the same period. Both moves exceed normal month-to-month variation. The benchmark identifies this as a placement problem rather than a presence problem, and the data does not yet show which prompts or surfaces absorbed those placements.

Gemini is Zoom's weakest platform. Zoom's rank-one rate on Gemini is 25.58%, roughly half its category-wide rate, and its valid recommendation coverage is 48.84%, more than 13 points below its overall figure. Gemini is the only tracked platform where Zoom's recommendation coverage falls below 50%.

Zoom's top-ten rate of 54.80% is only 1.26 points above its top-three rate of 53.54%. That narrow spread means Zoom rarely appears in positions four through ten. When Zoom is recommended, it is almost always recommended near the top, and when it is not recommended near the top, it tends to be absent from the ranked list entirely. That makes the loss of any top-three placement a direct loss of ranked recommendation rather than a shift down the list.

Biggest Opportunity

Questions This Section Answers

  • Where is Zoom losing first-position recommendations, and what can it do about it?
  • Which prompts and AI surfaces offer the highest-value targets for recovering Zoom's rank-one placements?

Zoom's clearest path is to convert its near-saturated presence into retained first-position recommendations. Zoom is mentioned in 381 of 396 qualified observations but receives rank-one credit in only 175. The 206 observations where Zoom is present but not the first recommendation are the highest-value target in the dataset.

That work should focus on the brand recommendation cluster, which is the only qualified buyer-intent class in the current public series, and on Gemini specifically, where Zoom's rank-one rate is roughly half its category-wide figure. The benchmark's own diagnostic question points the same direction: which surfaces or prompt categories drove the loss of 53 rank-one placements between July and September. Answering that question is the prerequisite for recovering them.

Competitive Landscape

Questions This Section Answers

  • How large is the gap between Zoom and Google Meet on recommendation strength?
  • Which competitor is the closest to Zoom on coverage, and how does its rank-one rate compare?

Zoom holds the strongest recommendation-stage position in web conferencing AI discovery, and Google Meet is the only brand within meaningful range on coverage. Every other tracked brand sits more than 25 points behind on valid recommendation coverage, and none reaches a rank-one rate above 2.30%.

Average recommended rank covers rank-eligible recommendations only.

Zoom sits first on top-three rate, first on rank-one rate, and first on average recommended rank. Its position is dominant but not insulated: Google Meet matches Zoom closely on coverage and on sentiment, and the gap between the two brands on top-three rate is 10.11 points, narrower than the gap between Google Meet and the third-place brand at 33.33 points.

Prompt Evidence

Questions This Section Answers

  • What do the example prompts reveal about how AI systems frame Zoom on different surfaces?
  • On which prompts does Zoom appear as a reference point rather than as the recommended option?

Google AI Mode / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "video conferencing" Result: Zoom was recommended at first position, consistent with its 51.52% rank-one rate on this surface.

Gemini / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "online meeting platforms" Result: Zoom appeared in a valid recommendation shortlist but at a lower rank, consistent with its 25.58% rank-one rate on Gemini.

Google AI Overviews / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "virtual meeting" Result: Zoom was surfaced and recommended near the top of the list, consistent with its 72.82% valid recommendation coverage rate on this surface.

ChatGPT / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "meeting apps like zoom" Result: Zoom was mentioned as a reference point in a comparison-style prompt, a context where the brand is present as an anchor rather than as the recommended option.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Market Discovery Audit Map every qualified prompt where Zoom is present but not recommended at first position, and isolate the surfaces and prompt types driving the 53 lost rank-one placements since July 2026.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Prioritize the Gemini gap and the brand recommendation cluster, where Zoom's rank-one rate is roughly half its category-wide figure and where the largest recoverable placement volume sits.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Strengthen the pages and answer assets that AI systems retrieve when forming first-position recommendations, with emphasis on the comparison and alternatives contexts where Zoom currently appears as an anchor rather than a pick.

Phase 4: Citation and Authority Layer Development Build the public evidence layer that supports first-choice framing, so that Zoom's near-saturated presence converts into retained top-of-list placement rather than presence without recommendation.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track rank-one rate, top-three rate, and valid recommendation coverage by platform each month, with Gemini and Google AI Mode reported separately, so that placement erosion is caught in the month it occurs.

Why This Matters

Zoom is winning the visibility contest and slowly losing the preference contest. Buyers who ask an AI system for the best web conferencing software still see Zoom almost every time, but they are being told to pick Zoom first less often than they were three months ago. That shift is invisible in raw mention data and only appears when recommendation placement is measured separately.

The next move is not more presence. Zoom already has presence. The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers that determine which brand an AI system names first, with Gemini and the brand recommendation cluster as the starting points.

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why are unclassified mention counts misleading for interpreting AI visibility?
  • What do Zoom's neutral mentions signify?

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions

For Zoom in September 2026: (288 × 1 + 92 × 0 + 1 × -1) / 381 = 0.7533.

This matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A brand mentioned 381 times sounds dominant, but that number says nothing about whether the brand was recommended, referenced neutrally, or flagged with a caution. Zoom's 92 neutral mentions are not wins. They are appearances where the AI system named Zoom without endorsing it, and they represent roughly a quarter of Zoom's total mention volume.

Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal events, and counting them as one number hides the difference. Zoom's single negative mention is negligible on its own, but the 92 neutral mentions are the more important figure, because they mark the boundary between being seen and being chosen.

Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility. Zoom's framing quality is strong at 0.7533, and that number is only meaningful because the mentions behind it were separated into positive, neutral, and negative categories first.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of Zoom's position in the LLM Authority Index AI Market Discovery Index for Web Conferencing. It is not a client result and does not describe work performed by CiteWorks Studio on Zoom's behalf.
  2. The reporting month is September 2026, with July 2026 as the baseline and August 2026 as the intermediate measurement in the current series.
  3. Six canonical AI and search surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. All six registered at least one qualified observation in each tracked month.
  4. Each monthly run began with 800 prompt-surface observations. September 2026 produced 614 unique questions, 542 relevant prompts, 258 irrelevant prompts, and 396 qualified benchmark observations after both qualification stages.
  5. Ten brands were tracked in September 2026: Zoom, Google Meet, Cisco Webex App, RingCentral, Whereby, ClickMeeting, GoTo Meeting, Dialpad Meetings, Microsoft SharePoint, and Zoho Inventory.
  6. One buyer-intent cluster qualified in the public series: Brand Recommendation, covering prompts where an AI system names a specific brand as the recommended option. No qualified observations were classified as Pricing and Value or Multi-Brand Comparison in any tracked month.
  7. Stage 0 extraction retained the query, AI or search surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and, where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources for each observation.
  8. A mention is counted when a brand appears anywhere in a qualified observation, regardless of whether it was recommended. Zoom recorded 381 mentions from 396 qualified observations.
  9. A valid recommendation is counted when a brand appears in a recommendation shortlist with a positive framing and a rank between one and ten. Zoom recorded 246 valid recommendations.
  10. All brand-level percentages use the 396 qualified observations as the public denominator, not the 800 raw collected prompts.
  11. Cisco Webex was replaced by Cisco Webex App as a tracked entity beginning September 2026. Movement between those two labels reflects a tracking change and is not a direct competitive comparison.
  12. Month-over-month movement identifies changes worth investigating. It does not by itself establish the cause of those changes, and source presence is not treated as proof that a source caused a recommendation.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
