Key Takeaways

  • InMotion Hosting was mentioned in 19.26% of qualified observations but earned valid recommendation coverage in 16.33%, showing decent presence with limited conversion to shortlist status.
  • The brand’s sentiment was a clear strength: 109 positive mentions, 16 neutral mentions, no negative mentions, and a net sentiment score of 0.8720, second-highest among tracked hosts.
  • Placement was the main weakness, with just 11 top-three appearances out of 649 observations, a 1.69% top-three rate, one rank-one placement, and an average recommended rank of 6.0854.
  • Perplexity and Google AI Overviews showed the strongest recommendation signals, while Gemini and Copilot contributed little meaningful placement, pointing to a need for stronger comparison, review, and citation support.

Answer Capsule

InMotion Hosting is visible in AI-generated web hosting recommendations but converts that visibility into shortlist placement far less often than the category leaders. In September 2026, the brand recorded a 19.26% raw mention presence rate against a 16.33% valid recommendation coverage rate, and its top-three recommendation rate was just 1.69%. The clearest win is framing quality: InMotion Hosting carried a net sentiment score of 0.8720 with zero negative mentions, the second-highest sentiment reading among the ten tracked brands. The clearest weakness is placement, since the brand appeared in a top-three recommendation position in only 11 of 649 qualified observations. The clearest opportunity is converting an already positive reference footprint into ranked recommendation credit, particularly on Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, where the brand shows its strongest retrieval signals.

Questions This Section Answers

  • How often is InMotion Hosting mentioned versus actually recommended in AI-generated web hosting answers?
  • Why does InMotion Hosting's strong sentiment not convert into top-three recommendation placements?
  • Which AI platforms show the strongest and weakest recommendation signals for InMotion Hosting?

InMotion Hosting holds a narrow but genuinely positive position in AI-generated web hosting recommendations, and the gap between how often the brand is mentioned and how often it is actually recommended is the central finding of this report. The benchmark shows a 19.26% raw mention presence rate in September 2026, meaning the brand surfaced in roughly one in five qualified observations. Valid recommendation coverage was 16.33%, so most mentions did convert into some form of recommendation credit. The problem is not presence or framing. The problem is placement.

The brand recorded 125 present observations, of which 109 were positive, 16 were neutral, and none were negative. That produced a net sentiment score of 0.8720, the second-highest among the ten tracked brands and behind only DreamHost at 0.8792. On framing quality alone, InMotion Hosting is one of the strongest-positioned brands in the category. AI systems are not cautioning against the brand, and they are not treating it as a comparison anchor. They are describing it favorably.

That favorable framing does not translate into shortlist position. InMotion Hosting appeared in a top-three recommendation position in only 11 of 649 qualified observations, a top-three rate of 1.69%. It was the first recommendation in a single observation, a rank-one rate of 0.15%. Its average recommended rank was 6.0854, the second-lowest placement average in the category ahead of only A2 Hosting at 6.2241. The brand is being described well and placed late.

The strongest platform signal is Perplexity. InMotion Hosting recorded a 43.21% valid recommendation coverage rate there, its highest across all six tracked platforms, alongside a 9.88% top-three rate and a 0.8780 sentiment score. Google AI Overviews produced the second-strongest coverage reading at 23.43%, with 41 valid recommendations drawn from 44 present observations. These two platforms are where the brand's public evidence layer appears to be doing the most work.

The clearest platform gap is Gemini. InMotion Hosting registered only two present observations there, one positive and one neutral, with zero valid recommendations and zero top-three placements. Copilot showed a similar pattern: ten present observations, eight positive, but no top-three placements and an average recommended rank of 4.0 on the single rank-eligible observation. The brand is effectively absent from recommendation consideration on two of the six tracked surfaces.

The category context sharpens the finding. Hostinger led September 2026 with 69.03% valid recommendation coverage and a 49.00% rank-one rate. Bluehost followed at 55.16% coverage. InMotion Hosting's 16.33% coverage places it seventh of ten tracked brands, ahead of HostGator, A2 Hosting, and GoDaddy. The benchmark also showed that the category-level valid recommendation shortlist share fell 3.9 points from July to September 2026, from 73.2% to 69.3%, meaning AI systems produced valid recommendation shortlists in fewer qualifying instances even as the observation count held steady. For a brand already converting mentions into recommendations at a modest rate, a shrinking shortlist environment raises the cost of every missed placement.

What InMotion Hosting Is Winning

Questions This Section Answers

  • Which platforms give InMotion Hosting its strongest recommendation coverage?
  • How does InMotion Hosting's framing quality compare with the rest of the tracked hosting brands?

The brand's clearest win is framing quality. InMotion Hosting recorded zero negative mentions across 649 qualified observations in September 2026, one of only a small group of brands in the tracked set to do so alongside DreamHost and A2 Hosting. Its net sentiment score of 0.8720 sits second in the category. AI systems describe InMotion Hosting favorably when they describe it at all.

The second win is Perplexity performance. InMotion Hosting achieved a 43.21% valid recommendation coverage rate on Perplexity, its strongest platform reading by a wide margin. That figure is more than double its overall coverage rate and reflects 35 valid recommendations drawn from 41 present observations. The brand also recorded a 0.8780 sentiment score on that platform, indicating that the favorable framing holds where the recommendation volume is highest.

The third win is Google AI Overviews coverage. InMotion Hosting recorded a 23.43% valid recommendation coverage rate there, with 41 valid recommendations from 44 present observations. That conversion rate, where nearly every mention becomes a recommendation, is the strongest mention-to-recommendation ratio the brand achieved on any platform.

These are real but narrow wins. The brand has no top-three strength to report on any platform, no rank-one strength outside a single Google AI Overviews observation, and no cluster where it leads. The wins describe a brand that is well regarded and rarely chosen first.

Where InMotion Hosting Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • How large is the gap between InMotion Hosting's recommendation coverage and its top-three placement?
  • Which AI platforms show no meaningful recommendation presence for InMotion Hosting?
  • Which competitors appear to benefit most when InMotion Hosting loses a recommendation slot?

The primary gap is recommendation placement. InMotion Hosting's 16.33% valid recommendation coverage converts into a 1.69% top-three rate and a 0.15% rank-one rate. That means roughly one in ten of the brand's valid recommendations lands in a top-three position, and roughly one in a hundred lands first. Hostinger, by comparison, converts 69.03% coverage into a 58.24% top-three rate and a 49.00% rank-one rate. The two brands are not separated by presence. They are separated by whether AI systems treat them as a default answer or a listed option.

The second gap is platform absence. Gemini produced two present observations for InMotion Hosting and zero valid recommendations. Copilot produced ten present observations and zero top-three placements. Together these two platforms account for 12 of the brand's 125 present observations and none of its 11 top-three placements. The benchmark tracked six canonical AI and search surface families in September 2026, and InMotion Hosting has meaningful recommendation presence on only four of them.

The third gap is the cluster structure itself. All 649 qualified observations in September 2026 fell into the Brand Recommendation cluster. The Pricing & Value and Multi-Brand Comparison clusters recorded zero qualified observations, matching the July and August pattern. InMotion Hosting's 16.33% coverage is therefore measured entirely against general hosting recommendation prompts. The brand's position in pricing, value, and head-to-head comparison conversations is not measured by this benchmark and cannot be inferred from it.

The fourth gap is competitive displacement at the top. Hostinger held a 55.02% captured share of AI opportunity in September 2026, and Bluehost held 5.52%. InMotion Hosting held 1.56%. The benchmark's competitor leaderboard shows Hostinger winning the primary cluster across every tracked brand's competitor view. When InMotion Hosting loses a recommendation slot, the evidence points toward Hostinger and Bluehost as the most likely recipients, though the public benchmark does not attribute individual displaced recommendations to specific competitors.

Biggest Opportunity

Questions This Section Answers

  • How can InMotion Hosting convert its positive AI mentions into ranked recommendation placements on Perplexity and Google AI Overviews?
  • What type of public evidence layer would help AI systems place InMotion Hosting in top-three recommendation positions?

The single clearest opportunity is converting InMotion Hosting's positive reference footprint into ranked recommendation credit on Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. These two platforms already produce the brand's highest valid recommendation coverage, at 43.21% and 23.43% respectively, and both carry strong sentiment readings. The gap is not whether AI systems will describe InMotion Hosting favorably. The gap is whether they will place it in the first three positions when a buyer asks for a hosting recommendation.

Closing that gap means strengthening the public evidence layer that these platforms retrieve from: comparison pages, third-party review coverage, structured plan and feature documentation, and source pages that AI systems can cite when constructing a ranked shortlist. The benchmark's evidence layer retains citations where platforms expose them, and the pattern suggests that InMotion Hosting's retrievable sources support description but not placement. That is a citation architecture problem, not a brand problem.

Competitive Landscape

Questions This Section Answers

  • Where does InMotion Hosting rank against competing hosting brands on top-three recommendation rate?
  • Which tracked brands show the widest gap between sentiment score and placement rank?

Hostinger holds dominant recommendation power in web hosting, with Bluehost as the strongest challenger and a compressed middle tier behind them. InMotion Hosting sits in the lower group by top-three rate, alongside HostGator, A2 Hosting, and GoDaddy.

InMotion Hosting ranks eighth by top-three rate and carries the second-highest sentiment score in the table. The numbers show a brand that AI systems describe favorably but place near the bottom of the shortlist, and the distance between its sentiment rank and its placement rank is the widest in the tracked set.

Prompt Evidence

Perplexity / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "best web hosting" Result: InMotion Hosting received a valid recommendation in 43.21% of Perplexity observations, its strongest platform conversion, but appeared in a top-three position in only 9.88% of them.

Google AI Overviews / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "What is the best basic web hosting?" Result: InMotion Hosting converted 41 of 44 present observations into valid recommendations, the brand's highest mention-to-recommendation ratio, with one rank-one placement recorded.

Gemini / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "What is the best hosting website?" Result: InMotion Hosting registered two present observations and zero valid recommendations, leaving the brand outside recommendation consideration on this surface.

Copilot / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "Which hosting is best for WordPress?" Result: InMotion Hosting appeared in ten observations, eight of them positive, but recorded no top-three placements and an average recommended rank of 4.0 on its single rank-eligible observation.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Market Discovery Audit Map every high-intent hosting prompt where InMotion Hosting is mentioned but not placed, and identify which competitor takes the recommendation slot in each case.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Prioritize the Perplexity and Google AI Overviews prompts where the brand already converts well, and build a placement plan for the Gemini and Copilot surfaces where it currently has none.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Strengthen the pages that answer general hosting recommendation queries directly, with clear plan positioning, use-case fit, and comparison-ready structure that AI systems can extract and rank.

Phase 4: Citation / Authority Layer Development Develop the third-party review, comparison, and reference sources that AI systems retrieve when constructing ranked hosting shortlists, since the current source footprint appears to support description more than placement.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track valid recommendation coverage, top-three rate, rank-one rate, and sentiment by platform each month to confirm whether placement improves independently of presence.

Why This Matters

AI presence is not the same as AI recommendation, and InMotion Hosting is the clearest illustration of that distinction in the September 2026 web hosting benchmark. The brand is mentioned in roughly one in five qualified observations and described favorably in nearly all of them, yet it appears in a top-three recommendation position in fewer than two in a hundred. A buyer asking an AI system for a hosting recommendation is unlikely to see InMotion Hosting named first, even though the system has nothing negative to say about it.

That gap is correctable, but only at the layer where it forms. Recommendation placement is shaped by which prompts a brand is eligible for, which pages answer those prompts, and which external sources AI systems retrieve when building a ranked shortlist. Improving brand perception will not move the placement numbers, because perception is already strong. The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers that determine whether a favorable mention becomes a first-choice recommendation.

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why is share of voice a misleading metric for evaluating InMotion Hosting's AI recommendation strength?
  • How does InMotion Hosting's sentiment score compare with its placement metrics?

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions

For InMotion Hosting in September 2026, that calculation is (109 × 1 + 16 × 0 + 0 × -1) / 125, which produces a score of 0.8720.

This matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A brand that appears in 125 observations sounds well positioned until the mentions are separated into positive recommendations, neutral references, cautionary mentions, and competitor-displaced comparisons. Those are not equal outcomes, and counting them as one number hides the actual position. Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. It tells you how often a brand is discussed, not whether it is being chosen.

InMotion Hosting's sentiment score is genuinely strong, and that is worth stating plainly. The brand has no negative framing to correct. But sentiment is framing quality, not recommendation strength. A brand can be described warmly and still be placed sixth, and that is exactly what the September 2026 data shows. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, and so is placement. InMotion Hosting has the first and lacks the second.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of AI recommendation behavior in the Web Hosting category for September 2026. It is not a client result and does not describe work performed by CiteWorks Studio on behalf of InMotion Hosting.
  2. The reporting window is September 2026, with July 2026 as the baseline comparison month and August 2026 as an intermediate measurement.
  3. Six canonical AI and search surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode. All six were active in the September 2026 collection.
  4. The September 2026 run began with 800 source prompt-surface observations and 622 unique questions after deduplication. All 800 mentioned at least one tracked brand. Of those, 787 were relevant to the Web Hosting vertical and 13 were irrelevant. The public metrics use the 649 observations that survived both qualification stages.
  5. Ten brands were tracked: InMotion Hosting, Hostinger, Bluehost, DreamHost, SiteGround, IONOS, Namecheap, HostGator, A2 Hosting, and GoDaddy.
  6. Three public clusters were defined: Best Web Hosting Discovery & Evaluation (consideration stage), Web Hosting Provider Comparisons (evaluation stage), and Web Hosting Pricing & Plans (decision stage). Only the first cluster contained qualified observations in September 2026.
  7. Stage 0 extraction produced the prompt-level records that retain the query, AI or search surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and, where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources.
  8. A mention is counted when a tracked brand appears anywhere in a qualified AI or search response, regardless of whether it was recommended.
  9. A valid recommendation is counted when the dataset marks the brand as receiving recommendation credit. Neutral, cautionary, comparison-anchor, and listed-only mentions are not counted as valid recommendations unless the dataset explicitly marks them as such.
  10. Top-three rate is the share of qualified observations where the brand appeared in the first three recommendation positions. Rank-one rate is the share where the brand was the first recommendation. Average recommended rank covers rank-eligible recommendations only.
  11. Brand-level percentages are calculated against the 649 qualified observations, not the 800 raw prompts or the 787 relevant prompts.
  12. Limitations: brands with fewer than 100 valid recommendations have movement that can shift with a handful of observations, and their percentages should be treated as directional rather than precise. InMotion Hosting recorded 106 valid recommendations, placing it just above that threshold. The public benchmark does not measure market share, attributable sales, every possible AI response, organic-search ranking, social mention volume, private or sponsored channels, or causality from a metric movement alone. Source presence is evidence about the information environment and is not automatically proof that a source caused a recommendation. The benchmark's modeled AI Authority Value metrics are excluded from this report.

See Where AI Is Recommending Your Brand

The public benchmark shows where InMotion Hosting stands in AI-generated web hosting recommendations. A company-level AI visibility audit shows why. It maps the specific high-intent prompts where the brand is mentioned but not placed, names the competitor that takes the recommendation slot, and identifies the external sources that shape how AI systems build their shortlists.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
