Key Takeaways

  • DreamHost appears in 48.1% of qualified observations but is recommended in 42.1%, showing solid visibility with limited conversion into recommendations.
  • Its strongest asset is positive framing: a 0.9103 net sentiment score built from 286 positive mentions and only 2 negative mentions.
  • Recommendation placement is the main weakness, with an 11.6% top-three rate and a 0.3% rank-one rate, trailing Kinsta, Cloudways, and WP Engine.
  • Perplexity is DreamHost’s strongest platform, while ChatGPT and Google AI Mode present the biggest opportunity to improve shortlist placement.

Answer Capsule

DreamHost holds a valid recommendation coverage of 42.1% in WordPress Web Hosting for September 2026, placing it seventh of ten tracked brands. The benchmark shows the brand is visible in 48.1% of qualified observations but is recommended in only 42.1%, and it captures the single first recommendation in just 0.3% of observations. Its clearest strength is a net sentiment score of 0.9103, among the highest in the category. Its clearest weakness is recommendation placement: a top-three rate of 11.6% and a rank-one rate of 0.3% leave it well behind the mid-tier risers that gained ground from the July 2026 baseline. The clearest opportunity is converting its strong framing and near-half presence rate into shortlist placement, where Kinsta, Cloudways, and WP Engine have already moved ahead.

Executive Summary

DreamHost is visible but under-recommended in WordPress Web Hosting. The September 2026 benchmark shows the brand appearing in 48.1% of qualified observations, yet receiving a valid recommendation in 42.1%. That gap is narrower than the category's most visible brands, but the placement picture is where the real distance appears: DreamHost holds a top-three position in 11.6% of observations and the single first recommendation in 0.3%.

The brand's framing quality is a genuine asset. DreamHost recorded 286 positive mentions, 24 neutral mentions, and 2 negative mentions across 312 observations in which it appeared, producing a net sentiment score of 0.9103. Only Cloudways (0.9367) sits clearly above that level among the tracked set, and DreamHost's score is higher than Hostinger's 0.8992. When AI systems do mention DreamHost, they frame it positively.

The strongest cluster is the only qualified cluster in the public benchmark: Best WordPress Hosting Discovery & Evaluation, which carries a consideration-stage multiplier. DreamHost's entire measured footprint sits inside this cluster. The benchmark does not yet contain qualified observations in the pricing and value or multi-brand comparison classes, so the brand's performance in those buyer-intent contexts is not measured here.

The weakest signal is rank-one placement. DreamHost captured the single top recommendation in 2 of 649 qualified observations, a rank-one rate of 0.31%. By comparison, Hostinger captured 355, SiteGround 63, Bluehost 32, and Kinsta 18. DreamHost's average recommended rank of 4.2339 places it mid-list when it does receive rank credit, behind Hostinger (1.4742), SiteGround (2.6765), Bluehost (2.9943), and Kinsta (3.9467).

The strongest platform signal for DreamHost is Perplexity, where the brand reached a valid recommendation coverage of 62.3% and a top-three rate of 18.2%, its best top-three performance across the six tracked surfaces. The clearest platform gap is ChatGPT, where DreamHost's valid recommendation coverage was 25.0% and its rank-one rate was 0.0%, despite ChatGPT carrying the largest single-platform opportunity pool in the dataset.

The clearest cluster-level gap is structural rather than competitive. DreamHost's coverage of 42.1% sits below the mid-tier consolidation band of 50.4% to 56.2% now held by Kinsta, Cloudways, and WP Engine. Those three brands were classified as significant risers against the July 2026 baseline, while DreamHost was classified as stable, with coverage down 1.4 points from 43.5% in July 2026 to 42.1% in September 2026.

What DreamHost Is Winning

Questions This Section Answers

  • What does DreamHost's net sentiment score of 0.9103 actually measure?
  • How does DreamHost's presence rate compare to lower-visibility competitors like Liquid Web and GoDaddy?
  • On which AI platform does DreamHost achieve its strongest recommendation placement?

DreamHost's clearest win is framing quality. Its net sentiment score of 0.9103 is the third-highest in the tracked set and reflects 286 positive mentions against only 2 negative mentions. The benchmark shows AI systems describe DreamHost favorably when they surface it.

The brand's second win is presence relative to its recommendation tier. DreamHost appears in 48.1% of qualified observations, well above Liquid Web (15.2%), GoDaddy (12.6%), and Flywheel (5.5%). DreamHost is not a marginal presence in the category.

The third win is Perplexity performance. DreamHost reached a valid recommendation coverage of 62.3% on Perplexity, its strongest platform result, with a top-three rate of 18.2% and an average recommended rank of 3.64. This is the one surface where DreamHost's placement quality approaches the mid-tier brands.

These wins are real but narrow. DreamHost does not lead any platform, any placement metric, or any coverage tier in the September 2026 benchmark.

Where DreamHost Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why does DreamHost's presence rate not convert into recommendation coverage?
  • Which competitors have overtaken DreamHost in top-three placement since July 2026?
  • On which platform with the largest opportunity pool is DreamHost's rank-one rate zero?

DreamHost's most consequential gap is recommendation conversion. The brand is mentioned in 48.1% of qualified observations but recommended in 42.1%, a conversion gap of roughly six points. That gap is narrower than WP Engine's, but WP Engine converted its presence into a 14.4-point coverage gain from the July 2026 baseline while DreamHost lost 1.4 points over the same period.

The second gap is top-three placement. DreamHost's top-three rate of 11.56% places it behind Hostinger (66.9%), SiteGround (53.9%), Bluehost (38.1%), Kinsta (14.3%), and Cloudways (12.5%), and roughly level with WP Engine (10.0%). The benchmark shows DreamHost is being displaced from shortlist positions by brands that were not ahead of it in July 2026.

The third gap is rank-one absence. DreamHost captured the first recommendation in 2 of 649 qualified observations. Hostinger captured 355. The benchmark shows DreamHost is effectively not competing for the top slot in any measurable way.

The fourth gap is platform concentration. DreamHost's strongest surface is Perplexity, but Perplexity carries the smallest opportunity pool of the six tracked platforms in the dataset. On ChatGPT, which carries the largest single-platform opportunity pool, DreamHost's valid recommendation coverage was 25.0% and its rank-one rate was 0.0%. On Google AI Mode, DreamHost's valid recommendation coverage was 41.5%, below its overall rate. The benchmark shows the brand's strongest signal sits on its smallest surface.

Biggest Opportunity

DreamHost's biggest opportunity is converting its positive framing into shortlist placement on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, the two surfaces with the largest opportunity pools in the dataset. The brand already earns favorable descriptions when it appears. What the benchmark shows it does not yet earn is a top-three slot on the surfaces where the most recommendation-shaped answers are being formed. Closing that placement gap on the two highest-volume surfaces is the clearest path from reference to recommendation.

Competitive Landscape

Questions This Section Answers

  • How does DreamHost's top-three rate compare to Hostinger, SiteGround, and Bluehost?
  • What does DreamHost's average recommended rank of 4.2339 say about its shortlist position?

Hostinger and SiteGround hold recommendation-stage strength in WordPress Web Hosting, with Bluehost as the clear third. DreamHost sits in the stable middle tier, behind the three brands that gained the most ground from the July 2026 baseline.

DreamHost's top-three rate of 11.56% places it sixth of ten, just ahead of WP Engine and well behind the three leaders. Its rank-one rate of 0.31% is the fifth-lowest in the set. The table shows a brand with competitive framing and mid-list placement, not a brand competing for the top recommendation.

Prompt Evidence

Questions This Section Answers

  • What do DreamHost's strongest and weakest platform results look like at the prompt level?
  • On which prompts does DreamHost fail to earn a rank-one recommendation despite appearing?

Perplexity / Best WordPress Hosting Discovery & Evaluation Prompt: "What is the best basic web hosting?" Result: DreamHost received a valid recommendation in 62.3% of Perplexity observations and reached a top-three position in 18.2%, its strongest placement result across the six tracked surfaces.

ChatGPT / Best WordPress Hosting Discovery & Evaluation Prompt: "best wordpress hosting" Result: DreamHost's valid recommendation coverage on ChatGPT was 25.0% with a rank-one rate of 0.0%, its weakest placement result on the platform with the largest opportunity pool.

Google AI Mode / Best WordPress Hosting Discovery & Evaluation Prompt: "Which hosting is best for WordPress?" Result: DreamHost reached a valid recommendation coverage of 41.5% on Google AI Mode, below its overall rate, with a top-three rate of 12.2% and no rank-one recommendations.

Google AI Overviews / Best WordPress Hosting Discovery & Evaluation Prompt: "website hosting services" Result: DreamHost's valid recommendation coverage on AI Overviews was 43.9%, with a top-three rate of 14.5% and no rank-one recommendations.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Market Discovery Audit Map every prompt where DreamHost is mentioned but not recommended, and identify which competitors take the shortlist slot instead.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Prioritize the ChatGPT and Google AI Mode placement gaps, where the largest opportunity pools sit and DreamHost's rank-one rate is zero.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Strengthen the pages and structured content that answer the consideration-stage prompts DreamHost already appears in, so the brand is positioned for shortlist inclusion rather than reference.

Phase 4: Citation / Authority Layer Development Build the public evidence layer that AI systems retrieve when forming hosting recommendations, focused on the source types that support top-three placement.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track DreamHost's top-three rate and rank-one rate month over month against the mid-tier brands that moved ahead from the July 2026 baseline.

Why This Matters

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why is DreamHost's benchmark position described as a buyer-choice problem rather than a visibility problem?
  • What did the brands that gained ground from July 2026 to September 2026 actually do differently?

DreamHost's benchmark position is a buyer-choice problem, not a visibility problem. The brand is mentioned in nearly half of qualified observations and framed positively in almost all of them. What the benchmark shows it does not yet earn is a place on the shortlist when AI systems form a recommendation. Buyers who ask an AI system for the best WordPress hosting provider are seeing DreamHost described favorably, then seeing Kinsta, Cloudways, or WP Engine recommended ahead of it.

The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers that shape shortlist placement. Presence alone is not enough. The benchmark shows the brands that gained the most ground from July 2026 to September 2026 did so by converting presence into recommendation coverage, and DreamHost has the framing quality to make that same conversion if the placement gap is addressed directly.

Sentiment Score

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions

DreamHost's September 2026 sentiment score is 0.9103, calculated from 286 positive mentions, 24 neutral mentions, and 2 negative mentions across 312 observations in which the brand appeared.

This matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A brand can appear frequently in AI answers without being recommended, and a raw mention total treats a positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention as equal. They are not equal. Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. Counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, because it separates brands that are being recommended from brands that are merely being named.

DreamHost's score shows the brand is framed positively when it appears. That is a real asset. It is also not the same thing as being recommended, which is why the sentiment score must be read alongside the top-three rate and rank-one rate rather than instead of them.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of DreamHost's position in the LLM Authority Index AI Market Discovery Index for WordPress Web Hosting. It is not a client result and does not describe CiteWorks Studio campaign outcomes.
  2. The reporting month is September 2026, with comparison points from July 2026 and August 2026 where the benchmark provides them.
  3. Six AI surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. All six were present in every month of the series.
  4. The September 2026 collection began with 800 prompt-surface observations and 514 unique questions. Of those, 800 mentioned a tracked brand, 771 were relevant, and 29 were irrelevant, producing 649 qualified observations.
  5. The competitor universe contains ten tracked brands: Bluehost, Cloudways, DreamHost, Flywheel, GoDaddy, Hostinger, Kinsta, Liquid Web, SiteGround, and WP Engine.
  6. The public benchmark contains one qualified buyer-intent cluster, Best WordPress Hosting Discovery & Evaluation, which carries a consideration-stage multiplier. The pricing and value and multi-brand comparison classes contained no qualified observations in the reporting period.
  7. A mention is counted when a brand appears in a qualified observation, regardless of whether it is recommended. A valid recommendation is counted when a brand appears in a recommendation-shaped answer, including shortlists and ranked lists. Top-three and rank-one placement are counted separately from coverage.
  8. Stage 0 extraction governs the underlying observation intake for the reporting period. It determines which raw prompt responses are relevant, which brands are present, and how each brand mention is classified before any coverage or recommendation metric is calculated.
  9. Average recommended rank covers rank-eligible recommendations only. A brand with no rank-eligible recommendations has no average rank basis.
  10. Net sentiment is the share of positive mentions minus the share of negative mentions across observations in which the brand appears. It measures framing quality, not customer sentiment.
  11. Brand-level percentages use the 649 qualified observations as the public denominator, not the larger raw collection of 800 prompts. The public version does not expose a unique prompt count beyond the 514 unique questions reported above, and per-brand denominators are not normalized to unique-question level. This keeps comparisons consistent across months and surfaces.
  12. Small absolute counts affect interpretation. DreamHost's rank-one count of 2 and Flywheel's, GoDaddy's, and Liquid Web's low recommendation counts should be read with that context in mind.
  13. The benchmark records what AI and search surfaces say when prompted about WordPress hosting providers. It does not measure market share, attributable sales, organic-search ranking, or causality from a metric movement alone.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
