10 minutes read

Key Takeaways

  • IONOS appeared in 59.48% of qualified web hosting observations but earned valid recommendations in only 45.76%, showing a clear mention-to-recommendation gap.
  • Top-three placement fell to 19.88% in September 2026 from 29.10% at the July baseline, indicating weaker shortlist visibility rather than a major drop in presence.
  • Copilot is IONOS's strongest platform, delivering 59.30% recommendation coverage and a 30.23% rank-one rate, while Gemini is the weakest for recommendation conversion.
  • IONOS sentiment is strongly positive, with 316 positive mentions and only 3 negative, suggesting the main issue is placement into shortlists, not brand framing.

Answer Capsule

IONOS holds meaningful AI visibility in Web Hosting but converts far less of it into recommendations than its presence suggests. In September 2026, the brand appeared in 59.48% of qualified AI observations yet earned a valid recommendation in only 45.76%, and its top-three placement rate fell to 19.88% from 29.10% at the July 2026 baseline. The clearest win is Copilot, where IONOS posts a 30.23% rank-one rate and 59.30% valid recommendation coverage. The clearest weakness is the collapse of top-three placement across the category, and the clearest opportunity is converting its large base of positive, non-recommended mentions into shortlist positions.

Executive Summary

IONOS is visible in AI answers but under-recommended relative to that visibility. Across 649 qualified observations in September 2026, IONOS was mentioned in 386 (59.48% raw mention presence) but received a valid recommendation in only 297 (45.76% valid recommendation coverage). That 13.72-point spread between presence and recommendation is the core strategic problem: the brand is being discussed, but it is not consistently being chosen.

The September 2026 benchmark marked IONOS as one of three brands with a decline beyond normal month-to-month variation. Valid recommendation coverage fell 7.8 points from the July 2026 baseline of 53.6% to 45.8%, and the brand declined in each of the two months since baseline. The decline is concentrated in placement rather than presence: top-three rate dropped 9.2 points from 29.1% to 19.9%, while raw mention presence slipped only 4.3 points to 59.5%, a movement within normal variation.

Sentiment framing is strongly positive. IONOS recorded 316 positive mentions, 67 neutral mentions, and 3 negative mentions, producing a net sentiment score of 0.8109. The brand is rarely framed negatively. The problem is not how AI systems describe IONOS; it is how often they place it in a shortlist.

The strongest cluster is the only active cluster in the public series, Best Web Hosting Discovery and Evaluation, where all 649 qualified observations sit. Within that cluster, IONOS holds a 19.88% top-three rate and a 5.70% rank-one rate, with an average recommended rank of 3.43.

The strongest platform signal is Copilot. IONOS posts 59.30% valid recommendation coverage and a 30.23% rank-one rate on Copilot, with an average recommended rank of 2.24. That is the clearest pocket of recommendation strength in the dataset.

The clearest platform gap is Gemini. IONOS holds only 15.66% valid recommendation coverage on Gemini, with a 7.23% top-three rate and a 1.20% rank-one rate. The brand is present on Gemini (42.17% raw mention presence) but is rarely converted into a recommendation there.

What IONOS Is Winning

Questions This Section Answers

  • On which platform is IONOS a genuine shortlist brand rather than a passing reference?
  • How does IONOS sentiment framing compare with its recommendation coverage?
  • Where does IONOS rank by raw mention presence among the tracked hosting brands?

IONOS has real, evidence-backed strengths. The brand is not starting from zero.

Copilot is the standout. IONOS earns 59.30% valid recommendation coverage on Copilot, a 34.88% top-three rate, and a 30.23% rank-one rate, with an average recommended rank of 2.24. On this platform, IONOS is a genuine shortlist brand, not a passing reference.

Sentiment framing is a second win. With 316 positive mentions against 3 negative mentions, IONOS carries a net sentiment score of 0.8109. AI systems describe the brand favorably when they mention it. That is an asset that most brands in the category do not hold at this level.

Presence is a third win. IONOS appears in 59.48% of qualified observations, which places it fifth in the category by raw mention presence and ahead of Namecheap (56.86%), GoDaddy (42.68%), HostGator (23.73%), InMotion Hosting (19.26%), and A2 Hosting (13.71%). The brand is not invisible.

These wins are real but narrow. IONOS has a strong platform pocket and strong framing, but it has not converted either into category-wide recommendation strength.

Where IONOS Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why does IONOS lose a recommendation in roughly one in seven observations where it appears?
  • How much has IONOS top-three placement eroded since the July 2026 baseline?
  • Which platforms concentrate IONOS recommendation weakness, and which is the clearest gap?

The clearest gap is the distance between presence and recommendation. IONOS is mentioned in 59.48% of qualified observations but recommended in only 45.76%. That means roughly one in seven observations where IONOS appears does not convert into a valid recommendation. In a category where Hostinger converts 94.76% presence into 69.03% recommendation coverage, IONOS is leaving recommendation-stage visibility on the table.

The second gap is top-three placement. IONOS holds a 19.88% top-three rate, down from 29.10% at the July 2026 baseline. That is a 9.2-point erosion in the brand's ability to land in the first three recommendation positions. The benchmark marked this as a decline beyond normal variation. IONOS is still visible; it is simply appearing in top-three slots far less often.

The third gap is rank-one scarcity. IONOS holds a 5.70% rank-one rate, which is the highest among non-leader brands but still far behind Hostinger's 49.00%. In practical terms, when AI systems name a single best hosting provider, IONOS is the answer in roughly one in eighteen qualified observations.

The fourth gap is platform concentration. IONOS recommendation strength is heavily concentrated on Copilot. On Gemini, valid recommendation coverage falls to 15.66%, and on Perplexity it sits at 40.74% with a 0.00% rank-one rate. The brand's recommendation position is not evenly distributed across the surfaces buyers use.

Compared with the strongest competitor, the gap is structural. Hostinger holds a 58.24% top-three rate and a 49.00% rank-one rate. IONOS holds 19.88% and 5.70%. The two brands are not competing for the same recommendation slot; Hostinger is competing for first position while IONOS is competing for a place in the shortlist.

Biggest Opportunity

The single biggest opportunity is converting IONOS large base of positive, non-recommended mentions into valid shortlist positions in the Best Web Hosting Discovery and Evaluation cluster.

IONOS holds 316 positive mentions but only 297 valid recommendations. The brand is being described favorably in observations where it is not being recommended. That is the clearest path from reference to recommendation. The work is not to change how AI systems describe IONOS; it is to make the brand's evidence layer strong enough that AI systems move it from mention to shortlist.

This opportunity is concentrated in the discovery and evaluation stage, where buyers ask which hosting provider is best. IONOS already has the presence and the framing. What it needs is the citation and evidence support that turns a favorable mention into a top-three placement.

Competitive Landscape

Questions This Section Answers

  • Who leads AI recommendations in Web Hosting, and how far ahead of IONOS is the top brand?
  • Where does IONOS rank on top-three and rank-one placement compared with Bluehost, SiteGround, and Hostinger?
  • Why does IONOS rank-fourth by recommendation rate but higher on the rank-one placements it does earn?

Hostinger holds dominant recommendation power in Web Hosting, and Bluehost is the strongest challenger. IONOS sits in the middle tier by coverage but ranks fifth on top-three placement, which is where the category recommendation battle is actually decided.

IONOS ranks fourth by top-three rate and fourth by rank-one rate, but its rank-one rate of 5.70% is more than double Bluehost 2.77% and SiteGround 1.08%. The brand converts fewer observations into top-three placements than its coverage peers, but when it does land in the top three, it lands higher. That is a narrow but meaningful recommendation pocket.

Prompt Evidence

Copilot / Best Web Hosting Discovery and Evaluation Prompt: "What is the best basic web hosting?" Result: IONOS earned a valid recommendation with a top-three placement, consistent with its 59.30% coverage and 30.23% rank-one rate on Copilot.

Gemini / Best Web Hosting Discovery and Evaluation Prompt: "Which hosting is best for WordPress?" Result: IONOS was mentioned but not recommended in most Gemini observations, consistent with its 15.66% valid recommendation coverage on that platform.

Google AI Mode / Best Web Hosting Discovery and Evaluation Prompt: "web hosting" Result: IONOS received a valid recommendation in 57.30% of Google AI Mode observations, with a 31.46% top-three rate and a 4.49% rank-one rate.

Perplexity / Best Web Hosting Discovery and Evaluation Prompt: "What is the best hosting website?" Result: IONOS was recommended in 40.74% of Perplexity observations but never in the first position, consistent with its 0.00% rank-one rate on that platform.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Market Discovery Audit Map every prompt where IONOS is mentioned but not recommended, and identify which competitor takes the recommendation slot in each case.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Prioritize the discovery and evaluation prompts where IONOS holds positive framing but loses top-three placement, and define the evidence gaps that keep it out of the shortlist.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Strengthen the IONOS pages that AI systems retrieve for hosting discovery questions, with clear, extractable positioning on the attributes AI systems associate with top recommendations.

Phase 4: Citation and Authority Layer Development Build the third-party source footprint that supports IONOS recommendations, focusing on the source types AI systems appear to synthesize from in this category.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track IONOS presence, valid recommendation coverage, top-three rate, rank-one rate, and sentiment by platform each month to confirm whether the placement gap is closing.

Why This Matters

AI systems are now where hosting buyers form their shortlist. A buyer who asks which hosting provider is best receives a small set of recommendations, and brands outside that set are not part of the decision. IONOS is visible in those answers, but visibility without recommendation does not put the brand on the shortlist.

The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers that determine whether a favorable mention becomes a recommendation. IONOS already has the presence and the framing. The work is to convert them into placement.

Sentiment Score

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions × 1 + neutral mentions × 0 + negative mentions × -1) / total mentions

For IONOS in September 2026: (316 × 1 + 67 × 0 + 3 × -1) / 386 = 313 / 386 = 0.8109.

This matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal, and counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement. Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, because a brand with high presence and negative framing is in a very different position from a brand with high presence and positive framing.

IONOS sits at the favorable end of this scale. Its 0.8109 net sentiment score means AI systems describe the brand positively in the large majority of observations where it appears. The recommendation gap is therefore not a framing problem. It is a placement problem.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of IONOS within the Web Hosting category, using the LLM Authority Index AI Market Discovery Index for September 2026.
  2. The reporting window is September 2026, with July 2026 as the baseline and August 2026 as an intermediate measurement.
  3. Six AI and search surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode.
  4. The September 2026 run began with 800 prompt-surface observations and produced 649 qualified observations after qualification.
  5. The competitor universe contains 10 tracked brands: IONOS, Hostinger, Bluehost, DreamHost, SiteGround, Namecheap, InMotion Hosting, HostGator, A2 Hosting, and GoDaddy.
  6. All 649 qualified observations fell into the Brand Recommendation cluster. No qualified observations were recorded for Pricing and Value or Multi-Brand Comparison, so this report cannot speak to price, value, or head-to-head comparison questions.
  7. Stage 0 extraction retained the query, AI or search surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and, where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources.
  8. A mention is counted when a tracked brand appears anywhere in a qualified observation, regardless of whether it was recommended.
  9. A valid recommendation is counted only when the dataset explicitly marked the brand as recommended. Neutral, cautionary, comparison-anchor, and listed-only mentions are not counted as valid recommendations.
  10. Brand-level percentages use the 649 qualified observations as the public denominator, not the 800 raw prompts or the 787 relevant prompts.
  11. The unique question count for September 2026 was 622. The public benchmark does not expose a per-brand unique prompt count.
  12. Month-over-month movement identifies changes worth investigating. It does not by itself establish the cause of those changes. Brands with fewer than 100 valid recommendations have movement that can shift with a handful of observations and should be treated as directional.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
