Key Takeaways

  • Cloudways reached 55.93% valid recommendation coverage in September 2026, ranking fifth in WordPress hosting.
  • The brand posted the highest net sentiment score in the set at 0.9367, with no negative mentions recorded.
  • Its main gap is placement: only 12.48% of observations put Cloudways in the top three and 1.08% ranked it first.
  • Google AI Mode and AI Overviews were Cloudways' strongest surfaces, while Perplexity and Copilot showed the weakest top-three conversion.

Answer Capsule

Cloudways holds 55.93% valid recommendation coverage in WordPress Web Hosting for September 2026, placing it fifth in the category and second among the mid-tier risers. The benchmark shows Cloudways is visible and well-framed, with a net sentiment score of 0.9367, the highest in the tracked set, but it converts that presence into top-three placement only 12.48% of the time and rank-one placement just 1.08% of the time. The clearest win is sustained baseline growth of 13.5 points since July 2026. The clearest weakness is a recommendation placement ceiling: Cloudways is shortlisted often but rarely chosen first. The clearest opportunity is converting its broad mid-list coverage into top-three and first-position recommendations in the brand recommendation cluster.

Executive Summary

Cloudways enters September 2026 with strong presence and recommendation coverage but a clear placement gap. The benchmark shows a raw mention presence rate of 60.86% and valid recommendation coverage of 55.93%, meaning Cloudways appears in a recommendation-shaped answer in more than half of all qualified observations. That coverage places it fifth in the category, behind Hostinger, SiteGround, Bluehost, and WP Engine.

The framing quality around Cloudways is the strongest in the tracked set. Its net sentiment score of 0.9367 is the highest of any brand in the benchmark, ahead of DreamHost at 0.9103 and SiteGround at 0.9015. Across 395 observations where Cloudways was present, the dataset recorded 370 positive mentions, 25 neutral mentions, and zero negative mentions. The analysis found no cautionary or negative framing attached to the brand in this period.

The gap sits in placement, not presence. Cloudways converts its coverage into a top-three recommendation only 12.48% of the time and into the single first recommendation just 1.08% of the time. Its average recommended rank of 4.4636 is the weakest among the top six brands by coverage. Hostinger, by contrast, holds a rank-one rate of 54.70% and an average recommended rank of 1.4742. The evidence suggests Cloudways is being listed as a credible option rather than surfaced as the leading answer.

The strongest platform signal for Cloudways is Google AI Mode, where it recorded 108 valid recommendations and a 65.85% valid recommendation coverage rate, the highest of any platform for the brand. Google AI Overviews followed at 63.01% coverage. The weakest platform signal is Perplexity, where Cloudways recorded only 16 valid recommendations and a 20.78% coverage rate, with a top-three rate of 1.30%.

The clearest cluster gap is structural. All 649 qualified observations in September 2026 fell into the Brand Recommendation cluster. The benchmark recorded zero qualified observations in the Pricing and Value or Multi-Brand Comparison clusters, so the current public series cannot show how AI systems frame Cloudways on cost, plan value, or head-to-head trade-offs. That limits what the benchmark can say about the decision-stage prompts where Cloudways competes on managed cloud positioning.

Cloudways is a significant riser from the July 2026 baseline, gaining 13.5 points of valid recommendation coverage to reach 55.93% from 42.4%. Its largest single-month move came in August 2026, when coverage rose 11.4 points. The gain is real and sustained across both months since baseline, but it has not yet translated into stronger top-three or rank-one placement.

What Cloudways Is Winning

Questions This Section Answers

  • Where does Cloudways have the strongest framing quality in the WordPress Web Hosting benchmark?
  • Which Google surfaces are carrying the most recommendation weight for Cloudways?

Cloudways holds the strongest framing quality in the WordPress Web Hosting benchmark. Its net sentiment score of 0.9367 is the highest of the ten tracked brands, and it recorded zero negative mentions across 395 observations where it was present. That is a meaningful signal: AI systems are describing Cloudways in positive or neutral terms consistently, without the cautionary framing that appears around some competitors.

Cloudways is also the second-strongest riser from the July 2026 baseline. Its valid recommendation coverage rose 13.5 points to 55.93% from 42.4%, trailing only WP Engine's 14.4-point gain. The rise was sustained across both months since baseline, with the largest single-month move of 11.4 points landing in August 2026. The benchmark marked this as a significant move.

On platform, Google AI Mode is Cloudways' strongest surface. The brand recorded 108 valid recommendations there, a 65.85% coverage rate, and a 22.56% top-three rate, all above its category-wide averages. Google AI Overviews is the second-strongest surface at 63.01% coverage. Both Google surfaces are carrying more of Cloudways' recommendation weight than ChatGPT, Copilot, or Perplexity.

Cloudways also holds a narrow but real rank-one pocket on Google AI Mode, where it recorded a 2.44% rank-one rate, and on ChatGPT, where it recorded a 3.12% rank-one rate. These are small counts, but they show the brand can reach the first position on specific surfaces.

Where Cloudways Has the Clearest AI Visibility Gaps

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why does Cloudways convert high recommendation coverage into so few top-three placements?
  • On which AI platforms is Cloudways present but not being chosen in the top three?
  • How do Hostinger and SiteGround's top-three and rank-one rates compare to Cloudways' placement?

The clearest gap for Cloudways is recommendation placement. The benchmark shows the brand is present in 60.86% of qualified observations and recommended in 55.93%, but it reaches a top-three slot only 12.48% of the time and the first position just 1.08% of the time. That is a conversion gap between being shortlisted and being chosen.

The comparison to the category leaders sharpens the picture. Hostinger holds a top-three rate of 66.87% and a rank-one rate of 54.70%. SiteGround holds a top-three rate of 53.93% and a rank-one rate of 9.71%. Cloudways sits at 12.48% and 1.08%. The brand is being recommended in the same answers as the leaders, but it is landing in the middle of the list rather than at the top.

The gap is not uniform across platforms. On Perplexity, Cloudways recorded only 16 valid recommendations and a 20.78% coverage rate, with a top-three rate of 1.30% and no rank-one placements. On Copilot, coverage was 55.17% but the top-three rate was 11.49% and the rank-one rate was 0.00%. On Gemini, coverage was 39.29% with a 5.95% top-three rate. These surfaces are where Cloudways is present but not being chosen.

The brand also shows a gap against WP Engine, which posted the largest baseline-to-current coverage gain in the category at 14.4 points. WP Engine reached 56.24% coverage, essentially level with Cloudways at 55.93%, but WP Engine's rise came through broader mid-list recommendations rather than top placement. Both brands face a similar placement ceiling, and both are being outplaced by Hostinger, SiteGround, and Bluehost in the top-three and rank-one positions.

The structural gap is the absence of qualified observations in the Pricing and Value and Multi-Brand Comparison clusters. The benchmark recorded zero observations in those classes for September 2026, so it cannot show how AI systems frame Cloudways on cost, plan value, or head-to-head trade-offs. Those are the prompt types where a managed cloud host would typically compete on differentiated positioning, and the current public series does not measure them.

Biggest Opportunity

Questions This Section Answers

  • What does Cloudways need to do to convert mid-list recommendations into top-three and first-position answers?
  • Which prompts are shortlisting Cloudways without placing it at the top?

The biggest opportunity for Cloudways is converting its broad mid-list recommendation coverage into top-three and first-position recommendations within the Brand Recommendation cluster. The brand already holds the strongest framing quality in the category and the second-strongest baseline growth. What it lacks is placement.

The path runs through the prompts where Cloudways is being shortlisted but not chosen first. The benchmark shows the brand is recommended in 363 of 649 qualified observations but reaches a top-three slot in only 81 and the first position in just 7. Closing that gap means identifying which prompts place Cloudways fourth or fifth and which competitors take the top slot in those same answers, then correcting the page, prompt, and citation layers that shape those responses. The opportunity is specific and measurable: move Cloudways from a credible option in the middle of the list to a leading answer at the top.

Competitive Landscape

Questions This Section Answers

  • Who leads the WordPress Web Hosting benchmark on top-three and rank-one placement?
  • How does Cloudways' average recommended rank and sentiment compare to Hostinger, SiteGround, and WP Engine?

Hostinger and SiteGround hold the strongest recommendation-stage positions in WordPress Web Hosting, with Hostinger leading on both coverage and first-position placement. Cloudways sits in the mid-tier group alongside WP Engine, Kinsta, and Bluehost, with strong coverage but weaker top-three and rank-one conversion.

Prompt Evidence

Questions This Section Answers

  • Which specific prompts show Cloudways being recommended but placed below the leaders?
  • Where does Cloudways reach first position, and how often?

Google AI Mode / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "best managed WordPress hosting" Result: Cloudways was recommended with a 65.85% coverage rate on this surface, but reached a top-three slot in only 22.56% of its Google AI Mode observations.

Perplexity / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "What is the best basic web hosting?" Result: Cloudways recorded only 16 valid recommendations on Perplexity, a 20.78% coverage rate, and a 1.30% top-three rate, its weakest surface in the benchmark.

ChatGPT / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "managed WordPress hosting" Result: Cloudways reached a 76.56% coverage rate on ChatGPT with a 3.12% rank-one rate, showing it can reach the first position on this surface but does so rarely.

Google AI Overviews / Brand Recommendation Prompt: "best WordPress hosting" Result: Cloudways recorded a 63.01% coverage rate on AI Overviews with a 9.83% top-three rate, present in the answer but placed below the leaders.

What CiteWorks Studio Would Do Next

Phase 1: AI Market Discovery Audit Map the specific prompts where Cloudways is shortlisted but not placed in the top three, and identify which competitors take the top slot in those same answers.

Phase 2: Recommendation Readiness Plan Prioritize the prompt clusters and surfaces where Cloudways holds coverage but weak placement, starting with Perplexity and Copilot, where top-three conversion is lowest.

Phase 3: Owned Answer Layer Buildout Strengthen the pages and content that AI systems retrieve when forming managed WordPress hosting recommendations, with emphasis on the attributes that drive first-position selection.

Phase 4: Citation and Authority Layer Development Build the public evidence layer that AI systems cite when recommending hosting providers, so Cloudways' strongest framing quality is supported by retrievable, attributable sources.

Phase 5: Monthly AI Visibility and Recommendation Tracking Track top-three and rank-one conversion by platform and cluster each month to confirm whether coverage gains are translating into placement gains.

Why This Matters

AI presence alone is not enough. Cloudways is mentioned in 60.86% of qualified observations and recommended in 55.93%, but it reaches the first position in just 1.08%. A buyer asking an AI system for the best managed WordPress host may see Cloudways in the list without ever seeing it as the answer. That is the difference between being an option and being the choice.

The next move is targeted correction of the prompt, page, and citation layers that shape those recommendations. Cloudways already holds the strongest framing quality in the category and the second-strongest baseline growth. The work ahead is converting that foundation into top-three and first-position placement on the surfaces where buyers are forming their shortlists.

Questions This Section Answers

  • Why is sentiment score alone insufficient for judging Cloudways' AI visibility?
  • What does Cloudways' 0.9367 sentiment score actually measure?

Sentiment Score = (positive mentions x 1 + neutral mentions x 0 + negative mentions x -1) / total mentions

For Cloudways in September 2026, that is (370 x 1 + 25 x 0 + 0 x -1) / 395, which equals 0.9367.

This matters because unclassified mention counts are misleading. A brand can appear in hundreds of AI answers and still be framed as a cautionary example, a comparison anchor, or a legacy option. Counting all mentions as wins is bad measurement. Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not a business KPI. A positive recommendation, a neutral reference, a cautionary mention, and a competitor-displaced mention are not equal.

Cloudways' score of 0.9367 is the highest in the WordPress Web Hosting benchmark. It means that when AI systems mention Cloudways, they are almost always doing so in positive or neutral terms, with no negative framing recorded across 395 observations. That is a strong foundation. But sentiment is framing quality, not placement. A brand can be framed positively and still be recommended fourth. Classified sentiment is required before interpreting AI visibility, and it must be read alongside top-three and rank-one rates, not instead of them.

Methodology

  1. This report is a benchmark-based analysis of how AI and search surfaces present and recommend Cloudways in the WordPress Web Hosting category. It is not a client implementation result.
  2. The reporting month is September 2026, with baseline comparison to July 2026 and intermediate comparison to August 2026.
  3. Six AI surface families were tracked: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. All six were present in every month of the series.
  4. The September 2026 measurement began with 800 prompt-surface observations and 514 unique questions. Of those, 800 mentioned a tracked brand, 771 were relevant, and 29 were irrelevant, producing 649 qualified observations.
  5. Ten brands were tracked: Hostinger, SiteGround, Bluehost, WP Engine, Cloudways, Kinsta, DreamHost, Liquid Web, Flywheel, and GoDaddy.
  6. All 649 qualified observations in September 2026 fell into the Brand Recommendation cluster. No qualified observations were recorded in the Pricing and Value or Multi-Brand Comparison clusters.
  7. Stage 0 extraction retained the query, AI or search surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources.
  8. A mention is counted when a brand appears in a qualified observation, regardless of placement or framing.
  9. A valid recommendation is counted when a brand appears in a recommendation-shaped answer, including shortlists and ranked lists. Negative, neutral, cautionary, comparison-anchor, and listed-only mentions are not counted as valid recommendations unless the dataset explicitly marks them as such.
  10. Brand-level percentages use the 649 qualified observations as the public denominator, not the larger raw collection of 800 prompts.
  11. Average recommended rank covers rank-eligible recommendations only. A brand with no rank-eligible recommendations is marked N/A.
  12. Month-over-month movement identifies changes worth investigating. It does not by itself establish the cause of those changes. Source presence is evidence about the information environment and is not automatically proof that a source caused a recommendation.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
