Key Takeaways

  • YETI led the category in October 2026 with 82.7% valid recommendation coverage, but Hydro Flask narrowed the gap to 5.9 points.
  • Hydro Flask, Nalgene, Owala and Stanley 1913 all posted series gains, with Nalgene showing the largest increase at 18.6 points.
  • RTIC Outdoors was the only significant decliner, falling 5.5 points over the series and losing share in both presence and placement.
  • The benchmark showed stronger recommendation coverage overall, but all qualified observations were brand recommendations rather than pricing or comparison queries.

Executive Summary

YETI remains the category leader in AI search recommendations for October 2026, holding 82.7% valid recommendation coverage, ahead of Hydro Flask at 76.8%. The two are separated by 5.9 points, a narrower margin than the 8.3-point gap that stood in July. Owala has also moved into the mid-70s this series, reaching 74.6% in October, which puts three brands above 74% coverage for the first time in the four-month series, though YETI and Hydro Flask have held the top two positions throughout.

Hydro Flask is the strongest mover across the series, up 8.8 points from 68.0% in July to 76.8% in October, its third consecutive monthly gain. Nalgene posted the largest coverage increase of any brand in the category over the same span, up 18.6 points from 33.1% to 51.7%, and Owala rose 11.1 points to 74.6%. Stanley 1913 climbed 15.4 points to 48.9%. YETI itself added 6.4 points. All five are significant risers against the July baseline.

RTIC Outdoors is the sharpest decliner, down 5.5 points from 14.0% in July to 8.5% in October, its third consecutive monthly decline and the only significant drop in the category. Its raw mention presence fell 8.5 points to 18.1%, and its top-three rate dropped 3.5 points to 3.4%.

Against the prior month, YETI's move was the most decisive: up 4.9 points from 77.8% in September to 82.7% in October, a steeper single-month gain than the leader has posted earlier in the series. The category as a whole is mixed, with five significant risers, one significant decliner, and four stable brands over the baseline-to-current series.

Each monthly run begins with 800 prompt-surface observations (569 unique questions in July and 589 in October) across the benchmark's defined AI/search surface universe. All 800 prompts mentioned a tracked brand or competitor in each month; 772 were relevant and 28 were irrelevant in July, and 765 were relevant and 35 were irrelevant in October. The public metrics use the 565 (July) and 613 (October) observations that survive both qualification stages.

The gains at the top of the category were broad rather than concentrated. YETI's single-month move from September to October was the only month-over-month change at the leader level large enough to stand out from normal variation, while Hydro Flask, Nalgene, Owala, and Stanley 1913 each advanced through a combination of smaller steps across the series.

What Changed This Month

Questions This Section Answers

  • What drove YETI's October gain, and how did its top-three and rank-one rates move differently?
  • How did Hydro Flask reach a series high in second place, and where did its rank-one improvement concentrate?
  • Why did RTIC Outdoors decline for a third consecutive month, and was the loss about presence or placement?

YETI Extends Its Lead on the Strength of a Sharp Monthly Gain

YETI's valid recommendation coverage rose from 76.3% in July to 82.7% in October, up 6.4 points over the series. More consequentially, its movement from September 2026 (77.8%) to October 2026 (82.7%) was a 4.9-point single-month gain, the sharpest monthly rise the leader has posted in the series.

Placement quality moved with coverage. YETI's top-three rate rose from 60.0% in July to 68.2% in October, up 8.2 points, while its raw mention presence held essentially flat at 97.2% to 96.3%, a change of 0.9 point. Its rank-one rate moved in the opposite direction over the series, down 1.8 points from 16.6% to 14.8%, even as its overall coverage climbed.

YETI's October gain came through broader inclusion in the top three, not through a larger share of first-place placements. It appears in nearly every answer either way; what is expanding is how often it lands inside the recommended shortlist.

Highest-priority diagnostic: Which prompts moved YETI into the top three in October that previously placed it outside, and what attributes those answers cite?

Hydro Flask Reaches a Series High in Second Place

Hydro Flask rose from 68.0% coverage in July to 76.8% in October, up 8.8 points, its third consecutive monthly increase. The advance came with outsized improvements in placement: its top-three rate climbed 19.6 points from 47.1% to 66.7%, and its rank-one rate rose 17.7 points from 15.4% to 33.1%.

With 471 valid recommendations out of 613 observations in October, Hydro Flask's expansion is now visible in both how often it appears and how high it is ranked. Its raw mention presence was essentially unchanged at 91.3% to 90.4%, a 0.9-point decline.

Hydro Flask's movement is a placement story rather than a presence story: it was already in most answers in July, and what changed is where it sits within them.

Highest-priority diagnostic: Which answer formats and surfaces are driving the rank-one increase for Hydro Flask, and is the gain concentrated in bottles, coolers, or tumblers?

Nalgene Posts the Largest Series Gain in the Category

Nalgene rose from 33.1% coverage in July to 51.7% in October, up 18.6 points, the largest increase of any brand in the category over the series. The gain was driven primarily by an early surge, up 12.5 points from July to August, followed by more moderate steps into October.

Supporting metrics moved in the same direction. Raw mention presence rose from 47.4% to 59.5%, up 12.1 points, and the top-three rate climbed 6.6 points to 14.2%. The rank-one rate nearly quadrupled in relative terms, up 2.4 points from 0.9% to 3.3%, but remains modest in absolute terms.

Nalgene's expansion is largely about becoming a standard part of the answer rather than the first choice within it. Its 317 valid recommendations in October are substantial, but its placement profile still sits well below the top two.

Highest-priority diagnostic: Which prompt categories drove the July-to-August surge, and has that set of prompts held through October?

Owala and Stanley 1913 Consolidate in the Contender Tier

Owala climbed from 63.5% coverage in July to 74.6% in October, up 11.1 points, holding third place. Stanley 1913 rose from 33.5% to 48.9%, up 15.4 points, moving from fifth to a position close behind Nalgene. Both are significant risers on the series.

For Owala, the gain came with a 13.7-point rise in its top-three rate to 61.0%, while its rank-one rate eased 1.9 points to 26.4%. Raw mention presence was up 2.3 points to 82.9%. Stanley 1913 showed gains across presence and placement, with raw mention presence up 8.8 points to 61.2% and the top-three rate up 7.2 points to 23.6%.

The two are at different stages of the same pattern: Owala is already a frequent first choice and is expanding its shortlist presence, while Stanley 1913 is still building the presence that precedes placement.

Highest-priority diagnostic: For Owala, which surfaces are driving the top-three expansion; for Stanley 1913, which product queries are contributing most to its series-long climb?

RTIC Outdoors Declines for a Third Consecutive Month

RTIC Outdoors fell from 14.0% coverage in July to 8.5% in October, down 5.5 points, the only significant decline in the category. Its month-over-month move from September to October was a further 0.9-point drop, on top of a decline in each prior month of the series.

The loss spans presence and placement. Raw mention presence fell 8.5 points from 26.6% to 18.1%, and the top-three rate dropped 3.5 points from 6.9% to 3.4%. RTIC's rank-one rate edged up 0.4 points to 1.1% over the same period. Its valid recommendation count was 52 in October, down from 79 in July.

The pattern is a broad retreat rather than a single ranking slip, with the largest losses concentrated in how often RTIC appears in answers at all.

Highest-priority diagnostic: Which competitor brands and which cooler-specific queries are absorbing the recommendations RTIC Outdoors previously received?

Igloo Remains Within Normal Range

Igloo moved from 5.3% coverage in July to 3.8% in October, down 1.5 points, with a 0.6-point recovery from September to October. Its movements remained within normal variation across the series.

The absolute counts are small: 23 valid recommendations in October from a present count of 52 prompts. Its raw mention presence was essentially unchanged at 8.5% and its top-three rate at 1.6%, with no rank-one placements in the month.

Small counts make percentage movements noisy for brands at this level of coverage, and the category-level series does not show a sustained decline for Igloo the way it does for RTIC.

Highest-priority diagnostic: Given the small counts, is Igloo's coverage concentrated in a narrow set of price-point or capacity-specific queries?

Category Observation: Gaps Widening Below the Contender Tier

The benchmark records three widening coverage gaps across the series, each of which has grown in every month measured. The gap between Nalgene and RTIC Outdoors widened by 24.1 points, from 19.1 points in July to 43.2 points in October. The gap between RTIC Outdoors and Stanley 1913 widened by 20.9 points, from -19.5 to -40.4. The gap between Igloo and Nalgene widened by 20.1 points, from -27.8 to -47.9.

The field is separating into a group that is consistently included in AI answers and a group that is increasingly not.

Buyer-Intent Interpretation

Questions This Section Answers

  • Which buyer-intent clusters did the October benchmark actually capture?
  • What commercial questions about pricing and head-to-head comparisons remain unanswered by the current data?

Buyer-intent cluster

What it captures

Strategic question

Brand Recommendation

Prompts where the AI names and recommends a specific brand

Who wins the default recommendation when a shopper asks for the best option?

Pricing & Value

Prompts focused on cost, price range, or value assessment

Which brands are associated with value, and who wins when price is the constraint?

Comparison

Prompts asking the AI to compare two or more brands directly

Which brand is favored when the AI pits options head-to-head?

In October 2026, all 613 qualified observations fell into the brand recommendation class. The public benchmark did not surface distinct pricing or value questions, nor head-to-head comparison prompts, in the qualified set for this category.

The current data cannot answer how recommendations shift when a shopper introduces price sensitivity, or which brand AI systems favor when two options are compared directly. Those commercial questions remain open and would require a deeper, prompt-level analysis to resolve.

Evidence Behind the Benchmark

The aggregate metrics are built from prompt-level observations capturing the query, the AI surface that answered it, the recommendation outcome, the rank of any brand mentioned, the sentiment expressed, and the citations exposed where available. Company-level analysis can go deeper into prompt, competitor, surface, and evidence patterns. Source presence is not automatically treated as proof of causation.

About This Benchmark

This report is part of the LLM Authority Index AI Visibility Market Discovery research program.

Report-Specific Interpretation Notes

  • Several brands operate on small absolute recommendation counts in October 2026, including Corkcicle (18 valid recommendations), Igloo (23), and RTIC Outdoors (52); their percentage movements should be read with that limitation in mind.
  • The qualified benchmark set (613 observations in October 2026) is smaller than the raw collection universe (800 prompts), and all brand-level percentages are computed within the qualified set.
  • Movement is measured against the July 2026 baseline and the September 2026 prior month; changes identify areas for investigation and are not treated as proof of cause.

Next Step

The Public Benchmark Shows Where a Brand Is Winning or Losing. A Company-Level Audit Shows Why.

The aggregate percentages in this report raise the strategic questions but cannot answer them. Which high-intent prompts is a brand winning, and which does it lose? When a brand loses the recommendation, which competitor takes its place? What attributes do AI systems associate with each option, and which external sources are shaping those answers? These are the questions that determine whether a change in coverage is a durable shift in AI authority or a temporary fluctuation.

A company-specific AI visibility audit maps those prompt, surface, competitor, ranking, sentiment, and evidence-source patterns into a prioritized visibility strategy. It moves from the category-level signal in this report to the brand-level cause.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
