Language Learning Software in AI Search: The Biggest AI Visibility Problems and How We'd Fix Them

Mark HuntleyBy Mark HuntleyFounder and CEO
23 minutes read

Key Takeaways

  • Duolingo led the category with 517 mentions and 473 recommendations, while Babbel and Pimsleur formed the next strongest tier.
  • Placement and reach were not the same: Babbel appeared in top-three answers more often than Duolingo, but Duolingo held first place far more often.
  • Several brands had conflicting factual claims in AI answers, especially around pricing, free tiers, language counts and CEFR coverage.
  • The recommended fix is a documented process: baseline scorecard, fact verification, owned-page review, third-party source review and buyer-question content updates.

Companies covered: Busuu, Babbel, Mondly, italki, Lingoda, Memrise, Duolingo, Pimsleur, Rosetta Stone, Mango Languages

Answer Capsule

The November 2026 Language Learning Software benchmark compares 10 companies across 529 AI answers that met its inclusion rules. Duolingo recorded 517 mentions and 473 recommendations (89.41% of the answers). Being mentioned means appearing in an answer; being recommended means receiving an affirmative endorsement.

We examine each company, compare the available monthly results, and set out a five-step plan for improving the information AI systems can draw on. The work starts with measuring visibility and checking conflicting claims, then moves to company pages, relevant publishers and buyer questions. The cited pages need review before any correction request, and the research does not establish what caused recommendation differences or promise future gains.

The peer set splits into a dominant tier and a long tail. Duolingo, Babbel and Pimsleur are named in most answers and endorsed in most of those mentions, so they function as default options. The gap between them and the rest is wide enough that challengers are competing for a secondary slot rather than the top one.

Placement is a separate story from reach. Babbel converts its mentions into top-three positions more often than Duolingo, while Duolingo holds the first-place position far more often. A brand can be widely endorsed and still rarely lead, which matters when buyers ask for a single best pick.

Below the leaders, italki and Busuu are recommended in roughly half of answers, but their top-three and first-place showings are modest. Rosetta Stone, Memrise, Lingoda, Mango Languages and Mondly sit further back. For these brands, the practical question is which buyer questions they can credibly own.

For the agency, the useful starting point is not a single ranking but a per-brand view of where each client is named, endorsed and placed. That view should guide which pages and sources get attention first, and it should be rebuilt each month on a documented basis.

The monthly figures come from separate answer samples, so they show movement rather than like-for-like performance. Duolingo, Babbel and Pimsleur recorded higher mention and recommendation counts in the latest month than in the prior one. italki and Busuu also moved up, while Rosetta Stone, Memrise, Lingoda and Mondly recorded lower counts.

Because the samples differ, a change in counts cannot be attributed to a cause, and the smaller or larger sample size does not explain the direction. The honest reading is that the observed pattern shifted and the next snapshot should be compared with the same inclusion rules and documented dates.

Mango Languages is a useful illustration: its recommendation count was unchanged while its rate moved, purely because the number of included answers differed. That is a denominator effect, not a change in standing.

Busuu is endorsed in most of the answers that name it, yet it rarely takes the top spot. That pattern suggests the brand is treated as a solid option rather than a leading pick, which is a positioning question more than a visibility one.

The recorded conflicts concern how many languages Busuu offers and how far its CEFR coverage extends. Neither is rated urgent, but both are the kind of detail buyers check. We would verify current primary sources before proposing any correction, and we would brief the selected owned page and the third-party review for factual accuracy rather than persuasion.

Babbel

Babbel combines near-universal reach with strong placement, and it takes top-three positions more often than any peer. Its first-place count is well below Duolingo's, so the brand is a frequent runner-up rather than the default single answer.

The recorded conflicts concern monthly price and whether a free tier exists. Both are factual and both could mislead a buyer comparing plans. We would confirm current pricing and free-access terms from primary sources, then prepare a conditional correction package covering the selected owned page and the third-party review, with no edit made until the facts are confirmed.

Selected third-party review candidate: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?hl=en_US&id=com.atistudios.mondly.fa.

Mondly has limited reach and few top placements, and its counts fell in the latest sample. With no recorded conflicts, there is no factual repair to pursue; the question is whether the brand can earn a place in answers where it is currently absent.

The observed questions where Mondly appears include a specific language request, which points to a narrower entry point than the broad best-app questions. We would brief the selected owned page around that specific use case and check the store listing for accuracy, treating any visibility work as a test to be measured, not a promised gain.

italki is endorsed in most answers that name it, but it seldom reaches the top three or first place. That makes it a strong secondary recommendation rather than a leading one, and the counts rose in the latest sample.

The recorded conflict concerns hourly lesson pricing, which is central to how buyers judge value. We would verify current pricing from primary sources before any correction, then brief the selected owned page and the third-party review so both describe the pricing model accurately. Any change should be tracked against later snapshots without assuming it caused a shift.

Lingoda is named in a minority of answers and endorsed in most of those, but top placements are rare. The counts fell in the latest sample, and the brand carries several unresolved factual conflicts.

The recorded conflicts concern the CEFR range covered and whether a trial offer exists. Both are the kind of detail that shapes a buyer's first impression, and both need primary-source confirmation before anything is proposed. We would prioritise the trial question, brief the selected owned page and the third-party review, and hold any correction until the current terms are verified.

Memrise is named in roughly a quarter of answers and endorsed in most of those, but it almost never takes first place. With no recorded conflicts, there is no factual repair to pursue; the constraint is reach and placement rather than accuracy.

The observed questions where it appears are broad best-app comparisons, which are crowded. We would brief the selected owned page to make a clear case for the specific learner it suits, and treat any later movement as something to observe rather than a result to claim.

Duolingo is named in nearly every answer and endorsed in most of them, and it holds first place far more often than any peer. That combination makes it the reference point against which other brands are described, which is a strong position to defend.

The recorded conflicts are minor: the number of languages offered and the Super subscription price. Neither is urgent, but small discrepancies in a category leader's facts travel widely. Pimsleur is named in most answers and endorsed in most of those, with solid top-three presence but comparatively few first-place finishes. It sits firmly in the leading tier without being the default single answer.

The recorded conflicts are small price discrepancies, both low severity. They are unlikely to change a purchase decision on their own, but they are easy to check. We would confirm current subscription pricing from primary sources, brief the selected owned page and the third-party usage guide, and leave the rest of the positioning work to content rather than correction.

Selected third-party review candidate: https://palteca.com/babbel-vs-rosetta-stone-vs-duolingo-how-they-compare.

Rosetta Stone is named in a minority of answers and endorsed in most of those, but top placements are uncommon and its counts fell in the latest sample. It reads as a recognised name that is no longer a front-runner in these answers.

The recorded conflict concerns monthly pricing, which is a straightforward fact to confirm. We would verify current pricing from primary sources before proposing any correction, brief the selected owned page and the third-party comparison, and focus content on the buyer questions where the brand still appears rather than chasing the broadest ones.

Selected owned-page review candidate: https://mangolanguages.com/.

Selected third-party review candidate: https://open.edu/openlearn/languages/free-courses.

Mango Languages has limited reach and few top placements, and its recommendation count was unchanged in the latest sample. With no recorded conflicts, there is nothing to repair factually; the constraint is how often the brand is considered at all.

The observed questions where it appears include a specific language request, which is a narrower and more winnable entry point than the general best-app questions. We would brief the selected owned page around that use case and review the linked open-course source for accuracy, measuring any later change without attributing it to the work.

The CiteWorks five-step improvement plan

Step 1. Establish the baseline

Questions This Section Answers

  • What should the agency deliver when it works to establish the baseline for Language Learning Software?

Build a scorecard that records, for each brand, where it is named, where it is endorsed and where it is placed, keeping those measures distinct. Document the inclusion rules, the services covered and the collection dates so future months can be compared on a stated basis.

Assign an owner to each record and note what evidence would be needed to act on it. The scorecard is a working reference, not a verdict on performance.

Step 2. Verify disputed facts

Questions This Section Answers

  • What should the agency deliver when it works to verify disputed facts for Language Learning Software?

AI answers contained 16 conflicting claims across 7 companies. Another 0 possible conflicts were excluded because their company matches were uncertain. The conflicting claims need fact-checking before any corrections are proposed.

Work through the recorded conflicts company by company, starting with the ones rated medium. For each, establish the correct entity, the relevant date and a primary source before deciding whether a correction is warranted.

Where the company match is uncertain, keep the item out of the correction queue. Record each outcome as confirmed, no change needed, or still unresolved, so the register stays honest about what is known.

Step 3. Review owned pages

Questions This Section Answers

  • What should the agency deliver when it works to review owned pages for Language Learning Software?

Turn the selected owned pages into briefs that state the facts to verify, the buyer question the page should answer and the claims that need a source. Verification comes before any edit.

Each brief should name an owner and a review status. Pages are proposed for review, not assumed to be wrong, and no change is made on the strength of an AI answer alone.

Step 4. Review third-party sources

Questions This Section Answers

  • What should the agency deliver when it works to review third-party sources for Language Learning Software?

Prepare source-review packages for the selected third-party pages, starting with those that appear most often across captured answers. Check what each page currently says before drafting any request.

A citation does not show that a page influenced an answer, so requests should rest on accuracy rather than on assumed leverage. Log each request and any response separately from measured outcomes.

Step 5. Address buyer questions and measure again

Questions This Section Answers

  • What should the agency deliver when it works to address buyer questions and measure again for Language Learning Software?

Draft buyer-question content from the questions actually observed, focusing on the specific language and use-case prompts where smaller brands appear. Each brief should answer the question directly and cite verifiable facts.

Measure again on the same documented basis, and report completed work separately from answer outcomes. A later change in the snapshot is an observation, not proof that the content caused it.

These pages are candidates for review, not confirmed errors. Citation appearances are counted across the captured answers and are not added again for each company.

The publisher list should be prioritised by how often each page appears across captured answers and by whether it covers a client brand. Pages that recur and discuss a specific brand are the natural first reviews; those with fewer appearances can wait.

Citation frequency is not evidence of influence, and a page appearing often does not mean its contents are wrong. Each candidate needs its current contents checked against primary sources before any request is drafted, and requests should ask for accuracy rather than favour.

Some listed pages are owned by brands in the peer set, which changes how a review request should be framed. We would separate owned properties from independent publishers and treat each accordingly.

What we'd prioritize first

Period

Deliverable

Completion criterion

Days 1–30

Baseline scorecard, scoped fact-review register and page/source shortlist

Each record has an owner, evidence requirement and review status

Days 31–60

Approved page briefs and justified publisher requests

Separate confirmed edits, no-change decisions, requests and responses

Days 61–90

Buyer-content briefs and a fresh scorecard

Record work completed separately from measured answer outcomes and comparability limits

Start with the baseline scorecard and the fact-review register, because every later step depends on knowing what is measured and what is disputed. In parallel, shortlist the owned pages and publisher sources worth reviewing.

The first substantive work should be the medium-severity conflicts at the leading brands, where small factual errors reach the widest audience, followed by the trial and pricing questions at the challengers. Page briefs and publisher requests come next, each with an owner and an evidence requirement.

Buyer-question briefs and a fresh scorecard close the first cycle. Report completed work separately from measured answer outcomes, and keep the comparability limits visible so no one reads a movement as a result.

Methodology and conclusion

Questions This Section Answers

  • What do the Language Learning Software sample and source-review limits allow us to conclude?

This report covers 2026-11. The exact dates when the original AI answers were collected have not been verified. The visibility rates use 529 answers that met the benchmark's inclusion rules. A company is recommended only when the answer both endorses it and uses positive wording. Top 3 and first-place counts are part of those recommendations, not extra recommendations.

An answer can mention or recommend several companies, so company counts cannot be added to find the number of distinct answers. The net sentiment score is positive minus negative mentions, divided by all company mentions; it describes answer wording, not customer satisfaction.

The wider citation analysis covers 800 captured answers and 5437 appearances of cited URLs. Citation appearances across all captured answers differ from the number of benchmark answers citing a page and the number that also recommend a company. The current contents of cited pages and disputed company claims still need independent verification.

The answer samples differ between months. These comparisons show how the recorded results changed; they do not establish why they changed.

These results describe how a set of AI answers discussed the peer set in the reporting month. The visibility figures rest on answers that met the inclusion rules, and the exact collection dates have not been verified. A recommendation requires both an endorsement and positive wording; top-three and first-place counts sit inside recommendations rather than adding to them.

Answers can name several companies, so company counts cannot be summed into a count of distinct answers. Sentiment describes answer wording, not customer satisfaction. The wider citation analysis covers a larger body of captured answers, and citation appearances are not the same as a page being cited in a benchmark answer.

The monthly samples differ, so comparisons show how recorded results changed, not why. Current page contents and disputed company claims still need independent verification. The proposed next steps are a documented scorecard, a verified fact register, page and source briefs, buyer-question content and a fresh snapshot measured on the same basis.

Understanding AI search visibility.

AI search experiences create answers by pulling information from many places online and summarizing it into a single response.

What Is AI Citation Intelligence?
AI citation intelligence is the process of measuring where AI platforms source their information and how frequently a brand is mentioned or referenced in AI-generated responses. Because LLMs synthesize across multiple sources, the sites and brands that appear repeatedly tend to influence how a topic or company is framed. This practice focuses on identifying which sources shape AI outputs and tracking brand visibility across different AI systems.
What Is Citation Architecture?
Citation architecture describes the set of sources that consistently inform how AI systems talk about a brand, product, or topic. LLMs draw from websites, articles, forums, and public discussion, and the sources they rely on most often become the backbone of their answers. Building strong citation architecture means ensuring that accurate, credible, high authority sources are the ones most likely to shape the way AI tools summarize and recommend a brand.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving the chances that AI systems use and cite your brand or content when generating answers. While traditional SEO is centered on ranking pages in search results, GEO focuses on how LLMs retrieve, interpret, and combine information when responding to a question. The objective is to strengthen the content and sources AI systems rely on, so your brand is treated as a trusted reference in AI responses.
What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with competitors in the same category. It reflects visibility across AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Monitoring AI share of voice helps organizations see whether AI systems consistently include and recommend their brand for key queries or whether competitor brands are showing up more often.
